Book excerpt: Five educational researchers, coming from a variety of higher education institutions, academic disciplines, and cultural backgrounds, met together over a three-year period to discuss the present and future of doctoral education and training in the field of education. Their hope was that the product of their discussions would enable educators and policy makers around the world to rethink, restructure, and even design new programs to prepare the rising generation of educational researchers in their countries. These differences in academic, national, and institutional perspectives led to a variety of ways, even conflicting ones, in which the quality of doctoral education and training could be improved. Based on our discussion, we came to the conclusion that there are no universal solutions to the problems involved in setting up and operating a quality doctoral program. Rather, educators would be wise to be aware of the alternatives at their disposal and make informed choices based on an understanding of the larger societal and political contexts in their states, regions, or nations. To facilitate this decision-making process, we have chosen to conclude with a set of key questions that should be addressed by those seeking to examine and improve their doctoral programs in education and briefly describe some of the alternative ways of answering these questions. Instead of passively absorbing a unified position, then, the reader is invited to join the dialogue that has taken place (and is still taking place) between and among the authors. To exemplify such a dialogue, each chapter is followed by one or two commentaries written by members of the group. We would encourage the reader to write commentaries on the individual chapters (and perhaps the commentaries), thereby engaging in a dialogue with the authors on a fairly personal level.

The first section of the book, Separation Revisited, brings together notions of separation, focusing on how loss is emotionally and physically manifested when death, grief, and bodily injury are experienced. In the second section, (Re)Engaging with Lost and Found, readers are encouraged to imagine new possibilities considering trauma and loss in educational and musical spaces. These pieces offer deliberate ruminations moving the discourse toward (re)engagement in and through music education and artistic contexts. The co-editors conclude the book by drawing attention to narrative inquiry’s double-edged nature in stories of trauma and how the retelling of lost and found narratives offers a way to imagine lives otherwise—lives not smothered by grief and horror—through the conceivable reliving of unfathomable stories of experience. Book excerpt: In the era of globalization since the 1990s, international cooperation has become one of the most challenging topics of debate and research in higher education. This book attempts to provide scientific evidence on the debates and different types of internationalization found in higher education from a Mexican point of view. It identifies German and Mexican partnership collaborations in institutions of higher education as well as the experiences of German and Mexican university personnel involved in educational projects. The findings are based on qualitative research using documentary evidence, semi-structured expert interviews and qualitative content analysis. The study encompasses three levels. At the macro level, internationalization of higher education is discussed in a general way but with a focus on the Mexican situation, presenting a typology of prevailing types of internationalization. The meso level includes a secondary analysis of official data on the bilateral relations between German and Mexican institutions of higher education. The micro level presents a case study of two particular university collaborations using the experiences of those involved in both countries. Laura Patricia Cruz Ruiz (born 1972 in Chiapas, Mexico) studied in the field of education at the Business and Pedagogical Development University (UNIVDEP) in Mexico City, where she received her Master Degree (M.A.) in 2008. She has worked at the Mexican Secretariat of Health and Education as well as in the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT), from which, in 2010, she obtained a scholarship for her doctoral studies in Germany. She held a German-Mexican scholarship for international capacity building in Germany from 2005-2006. In 2015, she completed her doctoral degree (Dr. phil.) at the Faculty for Philosophy and Educational Research in the field of Comparative Education at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany.
