Book Postmodern Poetry and Queer Medievalisms Time Mechanics

Download or read book Postmodern Poetry and Queer Medievalisms Time Mechanics written by David Hadbawnik and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume builds on recent scholarship on contemporary poetry in relation to medieval literature, focusing on postmodern poets who work with the medieval in a variety of ways. Such recent projects invert or “queer” the usual transactional nature of engagements with older forms of literature, in which readers are asked to exchange some small measure of bewilderment at archaic language or forms for a sense of having experienced a medieval text. The poets under consideration in this volume demand that readers grapple with the ways in which we are still “medieval” – in other words, the ways in which the questions posed by their medieval source material still reverberate and hold relevance for today’s world. They do so by challenging the primacy of present over past, toppling the categories of old and new, and suggesting new interpretive frameworks for contemporary and medieval poetry alike.

Their dire goddess Hel will see him broken or destroyed, for she knows the power that lies quiescent within him and will not suffer him to walk free. Yet the very torments the Niflungar wrack upon Odin may become the means of his ascension. In his desperation, he turns to darker Realms still. Foes surround Odin and his people on all sides. Yet Odin, their king, holds fearsome abilities of his own. And soon, the living and the dead will bend the knee before a new-risen god. The Ragnarök Prophecy recombines material previously published as Gods of the Ragnarok Era, Runeblade Saga, and Legends of the Ragnarok Era, along with new material, to produce a definitive edition of this retelling of Norse myth. Mythology, horror, and dark fantasy meld together in an ice age. For fans of Richard Swan, Anthony Ryan, and Brian Lee Durfee, this is a dark mythological retelling filled with gods and monsters from the Viking Age and beyond. The Eschaton Cycle begins.

Book Reading the Runes in Old English and Old Norse Poetry

Download or read book Reading the Runes in Old English and Old Norse Poetry written by Thomas Birkett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading the Runes in Old English and Old Norse Poetry is the first book-length study to compare responses to runic heritage in the literature of Anglo-Saxon England and medieval Iceland. The Anglo-Saxon runic script had already become the preserve of antiquarians at the time the majority of Old English poetry was written down, and the Icelanders recording the mythology associated with the script were at some remove from the centres of runic practice in medieval Scandinavia. Both literary cultures thus inherited knowledge of the runic system and the traditions associated with it, but viewed this literate past from the vantage point of a developed manuscript culture. There has, as yet, been no comprehensive study of poetic responses to this scriptural heritage, which include episodes in such canonical texts as Beowulf, the Old English riddles and the poems of the Poetic Edda. By analysing the inflection of the script through shared literary traditions, this study enhances our understanding of the burgeoning of literary self-awareness in early medieval vernacular poetry and the construction of cultural memory, and furthers our understanding of the relationship between Anglo-Saxon and Norse textual cultures. The introduction sets out in detail the rationale for examining runes in poetry as a literary motif and surveys the relevant critical debates. The body of the volume is comprised of five linked case studies of runes in poetry, viewing these representations through the paradigm of scriptural reconstruction and the validation of contemporary literary, historical and religious sensibilities.

Book Myths of the Rune Stone

    Book Details:
  • Author : David M. Krueger
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2015-10-01
  • ISBN : 1452945438
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Myths of the Rune Stone written by David M. Krueger and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do our myths say about us? Why do we choose to believe stories that have been disproven? David M. Krueger takes an in-depth look at a legend that held tremendous power in one corner of Minnesota, helping to define both a community’s and a state’s identity for decades. In 1898, a Swedish immigrant farmer claimed to have discovered a large rock with writing carved into its surface in a field near Kensington, Minnesota. The writing told a North American origin story, predating Christopher Columbus’s exploration, in which Viking missionaries reached what is now Minnesota in 1362 only to be massacred by Indians. The tale’s credibility was quickly challenged and ultimately undermined by experts, but the myth took hold. Faith in the authenticity of the Kensington Rune Stone was a crucial part of the local Nordic identity. Accepted and proclaimed as truth, the story of the Rune Stone recast Native Americans as villains. The community used the account as the basis for civic celebrations for years, and advocates for the stone continue to promote its validity despite the overwhelming evidence that it was a hoax. Krueger puts this stubborn conviction in context and shows how confidence in the legitimacy of the stone has deep implications for a wide variety of Minnesotans who embraced it, including Scandinavian immigrants, Catholics, small-town boosters, and those who desired to commemorate the white settlers who died in the Dakota War of 1862. Krueger demonstrates how the resilient belief in the Rune Stone is a form of civil religion, with aspects that defy logic but illustrate how communities characterize themselves. He reveals something unique about America’s preoccupation with divine right and its troubled way of coming to terms with the history of the continent’s first residents. By considering who is included, who is left out, and how heroes and villains are created in the stories we tell about the past, Myths of the Rune Stone offers an enlightening perspective on not just Minnesota but the United States as well.
