Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forfarshire County, or the district presided over by a count, is a norman-french name and was not used on this side of the Channel until the Conquest. The title of count was regarded as the equivalent of our car] and was soon replaced by the latter, though the earl's lady is still called countess. For long the earl's duties and privileges were those of the original count. The comes, or companion of the king, he was the ruler under his sovereign of a county or shire, and he derived an official revenue from his earldom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Scenes in Forfarshire We began the papers by suggesting some considerations meant to commend what we were to write about to public attention. These considerations we have not reprinted we felt that it was superfluous to do so. The acceptance which the papers met with as they appeared from week to week; the desire expressed to have them in a permanent form; and the very large number of Subscribers for this volume, to whom we offer cordial thanks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Angus, or Forfarshire, Vol. 4: The Land and People, Descriptive and Historical The Work was originally intended to have been completed in three volumes, but, for the reasons mentioned in the Preface to the third volume, that could not be accomplished, and, with a few exceptions, his Subscribers kindly agreed to take a fourth, or probably a fifth volume. As the Author proceeded with the fourth volume he found that he must either condense the work materially, or add a fifth, though smaller volume. After consideration he thought it better to complete the work in the same style as in the first three volumes, and to add the fifth, which is somewhat larger than half of the full-sized volumes. The fourth and fifth volumes will be issued together. In the compilation of Angus or Forfarshire he has studied to introduce as much variety in the matter as was consistent with the design and s00pe of the work. In order to have it as complete and as correct as possible, he has consulted well on to one hundred authorities, and he made personal applica tion for information to every person whom he thought able, and likely to be willing, to supply him with correct details on the special subjects he had then in hands, and with the view of having the information received from one source corroborated, if possible, by others. Notwithstanding all the care he has taken to have the work free from errors, he fears it is in many respects imperfect, and he begs his Subscribers kindly to overlook faults, both of commission and omission. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Angus, or Forfarshire, Vol. 3: The Land and People, Descriptive and Historical Angus or Forfarshire has now reached to Volume IIL, the number of volumes originally estimated to complete the work, but owing in a large measure to the interest in the subject taken by many of my Subscribers landed proprietors and others - the material has considerably out-grown that estimate, and as one half of the parishes and matter of much interest have been excluded, I purpose continuing the work to the extent of one or possibly two additional volumes. To my Subscribers I would beg to tender my best thanks, and I trust they will extend to me their kind and valued support for the remainder of the work, my desire being that it may be found as complete in all departments as falls within my power to make it. The remaining material is well advanced towards publication, and will follow in due course. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Angus Or Forfarshire Vol 2

Download or read book Angus Or Forfarshire Vol 2 written by Alex; J. Warden and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Angus or Forfarshire, Vol. 2: The Land and People, Descriptive and Historical In issuing the Second Volume of "Angus or Forfarshire" to my Subscribers. I have to express my gratitude for the many letters of approval and commendation which I received, and verbal expressions of a like purport made to me, regarding the First Volume of the work. The encouragement thus given has been a stimulus to me to endeavour to make the Second Volume as instructive, and, considering the nature of the work, as attractive as its predecessor, and if it be as well received as the First Volume I will be highly satisfied. In the Preface to the First Volume it was mentioned that Dr James Geikie, F.R.S., was to supply me with a short article on the Geology of the County, and Mr Edward Moir with another on the Botany of the Shire. In addition to these James Powrie, Esq. of Reswallie, very kindly furnished me with an account of the Fossils found in the County, a subject which he has long studied, and than whom there is none so well qualified to write. The Rev. John Fergusson, Minister of Fearn, was so good as to supply a short notice of the Mosses of the County, with a list of the more interesting Lichens found in Angus. His work, in conjunction with Mr J. Roy of Aberdeen, "Guide to the Botany of the North East of Scotland," shows how well he is qualified for such work. Each of these gentlemen has admirably performed his part, and I am sure their hibours will be highly appreciated by the Subscribers. I cannot sufficiently express my obligations and thanks to them for their valuable labours. Mr Powrie, in his manuscript, added pen and ink outlines of several of the fossils described. I have had these lithographed, and included in the article, and they give non-scientific readers a better idea of the appearance of the fishes than they can have by the letterpress alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. It is the essence of all the antiquity of that country, and the national avor may be felt and tasted in its stately streets, with their spiritual traditions and romances, their dignified air of association with bishops and archbishops, reformers and professors. Nowhere in Scotland is there such sweep and breadth of sky, nowhere is the sea so beautiful a sapphire, sparkling sea, reaching without a break to Norway. Fringed with white foam, the waves go racing up the yellow sands, and will not rest until they reach the bents across which lie the famous golf-links a course nearly five miles round of velvety, springy, elastic turf, the finest green in the whole wide world. In the foreground are the Forfarshire hills showing patches of various color, and away in the distance the Grampians, crowned with the crest of dark Lochnagar, at the foot of which lies Bal moral. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montrose Perthshire, Mugdock in Stirlingshire, and Old Montrose in Forfarshire - all went down in the storm Of civil war. Montrose's parents seem to have resided at all three impartially, and at the last their son may have been born. If this were so, it is easy to understand how tradition, anxious for some visible memorial of a famous man in the town bearing his name, should have trans ferred the honour Of his birth there across the few miles Of water that separated it from the Old home of his family. But in fact nothing is certainly known of the place or time Of Montrose's birth, except that he was fourteen years Old when his father died in 1626, and must consequently have been born some time in the year 1612. The Grahams had long been conspicuous figures in Scottish history. In 1298 Sir John Graham, the chosen comrade Of Wallace, had fallen, more fortunate than his friend, at the battle of Falkirk, in the churchyard of which town his tomb may still be seen. In 1304, at the capitulation which seemed for the moment to have closed the Scots' struggle for independence, Sir David, the first proprietor Of Old Montrose, had been specially marked by the English king as a dangerous man. Through the wars Of Bruce and his immediate successors the Grahams had stood stoutly by the national cause. In the thir teenth and fourteenth centuries they had three times intermarried with the royal blood of Scotland. A son of Sir William Graham and the Princess Mary, daughter Of Robert the Third, was the first Primate of Scotland and as a Graham of a later generation had held the see of Dunblane, the indifference expressed for bishops by their illustrious descendant should at least not have been hereditary. One of Sir William's grandsons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
