Book excerpt: Jenny was raised, along with her twin brother, in a commune in northern California. Her life there had become a living nightmare from parental neglect and abuse, as well as bullying from her peers. A surprise birthday gift from her grandparents for her eighteenth birthday gave her the ability to run away. She managed to get to her grandparents in Denver who nurtured her and helped her earn her college degree. She moved to southwest Colorado after she graduated, and became a recluse, not trusting that anyone she might meet would not try to torment her as she had been in her childhood. She chose to live her life in isolation from human contact and did so for the next two years: summers of living out of a backpack in the San Juan Mountains and winters spent in a secluded cabin north of Durango. She spent her time exploring the mountain wilderness, reading books, and working on becoming a writer. Her only social interactions during this time of self-imposed seclusion were with the few people she encountered when she had to purchase supplies. Hiking down from the mountains for winter, she has a chance encounter with an older man on whose property she wants to camp for a night. A surprise early snowstorm strands her with this man for the duration and sets in motion a series of events that will lead her on adventures of self discovery that move her from the shadows of her past.

Book How to Name a Hurricane

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rane Arroyo
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780816524600
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book How to Name a Hurricane written by Rane Arroyo and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ThereÕs no denying it, media culture has ushered in a new era of visibility for gays in America. Yet somehow the gay Latino doesnÕt fit into this sound-bite identity and usually isnÕt included in national media images. Rane Arroyo offers a corrective. Known primarily as a poet and playwright representing the gay Latino community, Arroyo has also been publishing prose throughout his career and now gathers into this book a storm of writing that has been gaining strength, drop by drop, for more than ten years. How to Name a Hurricane collects short stories and other fictions depicting Latino drag queens and leather men, religious sinners and happy atheists, working class heroes and cyberspace vaquerosÑa parade of characters that invites readers to consider whether one is more authentic a gay Latino than another. Whereas actual hurricanes are given names, the gays given voice in this collection must name themselvesÑand these narratives in turn reveal something of the "I" of Hurricane Rane. Whether portraying a family gathering as Brideshead Revisited with a mambo soundtrack, recounting the relationship of transvestite Louie/Lois and her bisexual Superman, or bemoaning "feeling as unsexy as an old bean burrito in a 7-11 microwave," Arroyo tracks the heartbeat of his characters through a shimmering palette of styles. Here are monologues, a story in verse, and other experimental forms appropriate to experimental livesÑall affirming the basic human rights to dignity, equality, love, and even silliness. When the AIDS epidemic first hit, many Latino families destroyed any remembrances of their gay and bisexual sons that might betray their pasts to la familia or el pueblo. ArroyoÕs writings return the ghosts of those sons to the families, bars, dance clubs, and neighborhoods where they belong. By penetrating to the IÕs of narrative hurricanes, these stories honor the survivors of our ongoing cultural storms.

Book excerpt: A country divided by the American Civil War is unaware that now an even greater danger exists: a country divided into thirds. The most powerful nations on earth -- England, France, and Spain -- plan a simultaneous attack on the United States from all four directions to reclaim the land in the New World that was once theirs. On a cold January night in 1865, conspirators meet in a London pub to plot the fate of America. Three of them will be instrumental in carrying out the ambitious plan. British Major Josiah Sterling, as a special observer of the War, has access to top American military and government officials. Jeanetta Boudreaux, the widow of a fallen Confederate, has traveled from New Orleans to help her beloved South. Juan Carlos Ramirez holds a banking position of authority in California and the American West. As the Divine Plan unfolds, love sprouts between Josiah and Jeanetta, fully blooming as the fateful day of invasion draws near. But love can be distracting. Will the conspirators successfully derail America's chance at reunifying the Union, or will personal emotions put them all at risk? This historical novel is so intertwined with such a myriad of facts that one may wonder: is it indeed fiction -- or was it true?

Book Twentieth Century Fox

Download or read book Twentieth Century Fox written by Michael Troyan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here it is: the first-time look at the remarkable American multinational mass media empire and its century of entertainment—the story of Twentieth Century Fox (1915–2015). Or, to borrow the title of a classic 1959 Fox film, The Best of Everything. This is the complete revelatory story—bookended by empire builders William Fox and Rupert Murdoch—aimed as both a grand, entertaining, nostalgic and picture-filled interactive read and the ultimate guide to all things Twentieth Century Fox. The controversies and scandals are here, as are the extraordinary achievements. Among other firsts, the book offers fun tours of its historic production and ranch facilities including never-before-told stories about its stars and creative personalities (Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, James Dean, and Shirley Temple got started there). Finally, it is the first such work approved by the company and utilizing its own unique resources. The authors primarily tell a celebratory tale, but most importantly, an accurate one.
