Book Forestry Research

Download or read book Forestry Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are valuable in our daily lives, crucial to our nation's ecomony, and integral to the long-term health of the environment. Yet, forestry research has been critically underfunded, and the data generated under current research programs is not enough to meet the diverse needs of our society. Forestry Research provides a research agenda that should yield the information we need to develop responsible policies for forest use and management. In this consensus of forestry experts, the volume explores: The diverse and competing concerns of the timber industry, recreational interests, and wildlife and environmental organizations. The gap between our need for information and the current output of the forestry research program. Areas of research requiring attention: biology of forest organisms, ecosystem function and management, human-forest interactions, wood as raw material, and international trade and competition. Forestry Research is an important book of special interest to federal and state policymakers involved in forestry issues, research managers, researchers, faculty, and students in the field.

Book Managing Northern Europe s Forests

Download or read book Managing Northern Europe s Forests written by K. Jan Oosthoek and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Europe was, by many accounts, the birthplace of much of modern forestry practice, and for hundreds of years the region’s woodlands have played an outsize role in international relations, economic growth, and the development of national identity. Across eleven chapters, the contributors to this volume survey the histories of state forestry policy in Scandinavia, the Low Countries, Germany, Poland, and Great Britain from the early modern period to the present. Each explores the complex interrelationships of state-building, resource management, knowledge transfer, and trade over a period characterized by ongoing modernization and evolving environmental awareness.

Book The Pinchot Institute System for Environmental Forestry Studies

Download or read book The Pinchot Institute System for Environmental Forestry Studies written by Pinchot Institute for Environmental Forestry Studies and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes a prototype system for research planning and administration to meet man's needs for forest vegetation in and around metropolitan areas. The system's components involve social needs or services, technological developments, environmental effects, and the locales where the services, developments, and environmental effects occur. The system is organized from three different perspectives-a social-need viewpoint, a supply-response viewpoint, and an environmental-effect view-point. A series of diagrams are presented that show, for each of the three viewpoints, how to formulate and evaluate problems suggested by combinations of various components in the system.

Book Timber and Forestry in Qing China

Download or read book Timber and Forestry in Qing China written by Meng Zhang and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Qing period (1644–1912), China's population tripled, and the flurry of new development generated unprecedented demand for timber. Standard environmental histories have often depicted this as an era of reckless deforestation, akin to the resource misuse that devastated European forests at the same time. This comprehensive new study shows that the reality was more complex: as old-growth forests were cut down, new economic arrangements emerged to develop renewable timber resources. Historian Meng Zhang traces the trade routes that connected population centers of the Lower Yangzi Delta to timber supplies on China's southwestern frontier. She documents innovative property rights systems and economic incentives that convinced landowners to invest years in growing trees. Delving into rare archives to reconstruct business histories, she considers both the formal legal mechanisms and the informal interactions that helped balance economic profit with environmental management. Of driving concern were questions of sustainability: How to maintain a reliable source of timber across decades and centuries? And how to sustain a business network across a thousand miles? This carefully constructed study makes a major contribution to Chinese economic and environmental history and to world-historical discourses on resource management, early modern commercialization, and sustainable development.

Book 13 Years of Forestry Research in West Virginia

Download or read book 13 Years of Forestry Research in West Virginia written by George R. Trimble (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2The Fernow Experimental Forest, a 3,640 acre tract on the Monongahela National Forest, was set aside for the use of this research unit as an outdoor laboratory for studies in managing mountainous forest land. The forest stands here are mixtures of old-growth and second-growth hardwoods dating from around 1905, when heavy cuttings were made. In topography, history of cutting, climate, and variety of species the Fernow Forest is representative of much of the timberland in West Virginia and adjacent states. Though the Fernow Forest has been the main locale of the research program, other studies have been made in other parts of West Virginia, in western Maryland, and in southwestern Pennsylvania. A number of study areas are located on the Monongahela National Forest. And in 1957 an agreement was made to cooperate in forest research with the Union Carbide-Olefins Company on their land near Charleston, West Virginia. Studies are now under way there on a 2,500-acre area known as the Blue Creek Experimental Forest. The program of research at Elkins is concerned primarily with multiple use of forest land. It stresses integrated management studies aimed toward finding practical solutions to problems of managing the timber, water, and game resources of this area. Results from these studies should provide bases for judging compatibility of uses and determining use priorities. The pages to follow present an overall view of the Elkins research program and highlight the more significant results.S3.

Book Agriculture Forestry and Fishing Research at NIOSH

Download or read book Agriculture Forestry and Fishing Research at NIOSH written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-06-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors are the cornerstone of industries that produce food, fiber, and biofuel. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research in order to improve worker safety and health in these sectors. This National Research Council book reviews the NIOSH Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Program to evaluate the 1) relevance of its work to improvements in occupational safety and health and 2) the impact of research in reducing workplace illnesses and injuries. The assessment reveals that the program has made meaningful contributions to improving worker safety and health in these fields. To enhance the relevance and impact of its work and fulfill its mission, the NIOSH Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Program should provide national leadership, coordination of research, and activities to transfer findings, technologies, and information into practice. The program will also benefit from establishing strategic goals and implementing a comprehensive surveillance system in order to better identify and track worker populations at risk.
