Book Forestry for Woodmen Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forestry for Woodmen Classic Reprint written by C. O. Hanson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry for Woodmen This book is, by permission, based on Schlich's Manual of Forestry. It has been written to supply a cheap book on scientific forestry for foresters and woodmen, few of whom can afford the more expensive works, and was at first drawn up for the use of the School of Forestry for Working Men in the Forest of Dean. I am greatly indebted to Sir William Schlich, K. C. I. E., F. R. S., Professor of Forestry in the University of Oxford, and to the late Mr. W. R. Fisher, under whom I studied the subject while at Cooper's Hill College, forgiving me permission to make use of the Manual of Forestry and to reproduce some of the illustrations from that work. I have also referred in Chapter I to Gifford Pinchots A Primer of Forestry and to Bridges sand Dicks's Plant Study; I have occasionally referred to Nisbet's The Forester Forbess English Estate Forestry Simpsons The New Forestry and The Estate Nursery, The part on hedges is indebted to Maidens Hedges and Hedgemaking. Most of the photographs were taken by myself; some are by Mr. R. C. Milward or Mr. M. C. Duchesne, who have kindly allowed me to reproduce them. The other illustrations are from Schlich's Manual. My thanks are due to Mr. E. P. Popert, Consulting Forester to the Commissioners of Woods and Forests, and to Mr. A. G. Hobart-Hampden, Agent to the Earl of Bucking-hamshire, both retired Conservators of the Indian Forest Department, for reading through the manuscript and for much valuable advice and help in its preparation, and to Professor J. Bretland Farmer for revising the botanical part of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry, Vol. 10: A Journal of Forest and Estate Manangement Whilst pleading for oral instruction on behalf of the young forester, we were first to give him special teaching through the press, and we do not propose to vacate the position. Material of permanent educational value will continue to appear in these pages. And, indeed, the programme of our greatest Forestry Schools may suggest the scope and limits of such material. Correspondence and questions from earnest students are solicited. Dining the last three months, our name has been much in the mouths of that general public which so largely enjoyed the benefits of the International Forestry Exhibition. The building in which much of that interest was concentrated, is now dismantled. But Forestry hopes to deepen a permanent interest in the topics it illustrated, as well as in others of special interest to landed proprietors and woodmen. After the playing of the Queen's anthem, and at the call of the large audience who had that day numbered over Sir James gibson-craig closed the International Forestry Exhibition of 1884, on the evening of the second Saturday of October, by a short speech. The financial results of the Exhibition, as they affect the guarantors, are not yet known. But whatever other direct consequences may supervene, over half a million visitors have been interested in forestry, while experts from nearly every country have compared ideas, and elicited new thoughts soon, we hope, to be made apparent either in manufactures or commerce. Without any invidious distinctions, we must refer to the assiduous courtesy of Mr. Cadell, the Secretary, who has filled a difficult position in an admirable way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Forestry, Vol. 1: The Forest Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith the manuscript of the first half of "A Primer of Forestry," and to recommend its publication as Bulletin No. 24, Part I, of this Division. The present part ("The Forest") deals with the units which compose the forest, with its character as an organic whole, and with its enemies. It may be said to sketch the foundation of the practice of forestry and of forest policy. Part II will be entitled "Practical Forestry," and will deal with the practice of forestry, with work in the woods, with the relations of the forest to the weather and the streams, and will conclude with a brief description of forestry at home and abroad. For many of the illustrations of Part I, I am indebted to the kindness of several gentlemen not connected with this Division. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Important Timber Trees of the United States: A Manual of Practical Forestry Another feature may cause surprise in the minds of some of my readers. It is not at all improbable that some of the descriptions of trees considered do not agree with the reader's personal observation, and yet such descriptions may well fit the general average of the tree. The character and general appearance of trees are frequently modified to a great extent by location, climate, and soil. Trees of a given species grown in the same vicinity will often vary in form and sometimes in character of wood; therefore a description of the general average will best fit the case, and to give such has been my endeavor.
