It has been written to supply a cheap book on scientific forestry for foresters and woodmen, few of whom can afford the more expensive works, and was at first drawn up for the use of the School of Forestry for Working Men in the Forest of Dean. I am greatly indebted to Sir William Schlich, K. C. I. E., F. R. S., Professor of Forestry in the University of Oxford, and to the late Mr. W. R. Fisher, under whom I studied the subject while at Cooper's Hill College, forgiving me permission to make use of the Manual of Forestry and to reproduce some of the illustrations from that work. I have also referred in Chapter I to Gifford Pinchots A Primer of Forestry and to Bridges sand Dicks's Plant Study; I have occasionally referred to Nisbet's The Forester Forbess English Estate Forestry Simpsons The New Forestry and The Estate Nursery, The part on hedges is indebted to Maidens Hedges and Hedgemaking. Most of the photographs were taken by myself; some are by Mr. R. C. Milward or Mr. M. C. Duchesne, who have kindly allowed me to reproduce them. The other illustrations are from Schlich's Manual. Dining the last three months, our name has been much in the mouths of that general public which so largely enjoyed the benefits of the International Forestry Exhibition. The building in which much of that interest was concentrated, is now dismantled. But Forestry hopes to deepen a permanent interest in the topics it illustrated, as well as in others of special interest to landed proprietors and woodmen. After the playing of the Queen's anthem, and at the call of the large audience who had that day numbered over Sir James gibson-craig closed the International Forestry Exhibition of 1884, on the evening of the second Saturday of October, by a short speech. The financial results of the Exhibition, as they affect the guarantors, are not yet known. But whatever other direct consequences may supervene, over half a million visitors have been interested in forestry, while experts from nearly every country have compared ideas, and elicited new thoughts soon, we hope, to be made apparent either in manufactures or commerce. Without any invidious distinctions, we must refer to the assiduous courtesy of Mr. Cadell, the Secretary, who has filled a difficult position in an admirable way.
