Book The Quest for Modern Vocational Education

Download or read book The Quest for Modern Vocational Education written by Philipp Gonon and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocational education that includes both in-company training and schooling is a highly successful educational model - in fact, it has come to be considered the most effective kind of youth education to date. The development of this so-called Dual System is often attributed to Georg Kerschensteiner (1854-1932). In this book Kerschensteiner's work is presented in the context of modernization processes in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century, when the urgent need was felt to balance general education and vocational needs. The corresponding discourse was influenced by modern thinkers like Dewey, Weber and Simmel. This book thus offers new insights into the reform of vocational education and into educational thinking more in general.

After discussing the loss of their dream home, they decided to let go, relax and trust that the right home was out there and would come to them (release). It was so new that the agent didn''t have any details; however, Lynda and Steve decided to look at it the next day. They made an offer there and then and it was accepted. The Approval Default Setting causes us to go against what we truly believe in. The excessive need for approval leads us to make decisions to please the people whose approval we seek at the cost of what''s "right" for us. This Default Setting believes that others are responsible for our worth. If they like us, we''re okay, and if they don''t like us, we are not!People who struggle with this issue usually wait for approval of others for recognition of their achievements, run a mile in the face of conflict, are over-agreeable in their relationships, say yes to more things than they should, live their lives according to expectations of them, often have a hard time solving problems or making decisions on their own, don''t speak up and often rely on others for their happiness. If you are waiting for approval from others for you to live the life you love, then you''re living by default! The Blame Default Setting makes us a victim in life. Instead of taking responsibility for what happens to us we blame the outside world. "It''s not our fault," we say, "It''s (fill in the blank!)". This Default Setting is about taking the easy way out and blaming anything for a life that''s below where it should be.Playing the blame game is closely linked with the need for drama. You know, phrases such as, "You''ll never believe what''s just happened to me!" or "Can you believe what he/she did to me!" Some people create drama in their own life, while others get caught up in the drama of friends and family, or the world in general. If your default is to point the finger, constantly complain or attract drama into your life, then you''re living by default! The Conformity Default Setting has us unconsciously chasing other people''s or society''s definitions of success. This Default Setting has us spend our waking hours working hard to fit into cookie cutter patterns of success dished up by the media. They do a great job of telling us what success is and what it is not! So we constantly spend our time and money rearranging our external world in an attempt to get the "perfect" picture. Then, and only then, we will be happy! What''s your definition of success? If you can''t answer this clearly, you''re living by default! The Focus Splatter Default Setting unconsciously pulls us to dabble in lots of things but never really commit to anything. It''s when we mindlessly and half-heartedly splatter our focus on non-result producing activities, so we never fully engage in life. But, and it''s a big but, today and every day you have a choice. That''s the choice to live your life by default or to live your life by design. Sure, external circumstances might have dealt you a bad hand but you have the choice of whether you succumb to the default loop or rise above it into the design loop.If you are fed up with living a life that feels out of control and you are ready to make conscious decisions about the type of future you would like to create, here is a step-by-step process that allows you to meet all your responsibilities whilst you

Book Beyond Innocence Or The Altersroman in Modern Fiction

Download or read book Beyond Innocence Or The Altersroman in Modern Fiction written by Linda A. Westervelt and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, Linda A. Westervelt defines an important yet previously unidentified and therefore unnamed type of novel, the altersroman, or age novel. Fictions focusing on a protagonist's confrontation with mortality toward the end of middle age are likely to become ever more prominent in a Western world in which the average age of the population increases and more people reach late middle age and old age. Working from a diverse sample of modern literature, Westervelt analyzes the variety of responses to the life evaluation. Some characters achieve a level of affirmation that allows renewal, redirection, or simply peace, while others confront feelings of disgust or despair that so little time is left them. Her altersromane are books about seeking wisdom, though not everyone of this age becomes wise. The use of the term altersroman highlights the fact that the altersroman is a classification comparable to but also clearly distinguishable from the bildungsroman, wherein characters make the transition from youth to adulthood. Westervelt contrasts her older protagonists' characteristics with the equivalent characteristics in the bildungsroman through an examination of Don Quixote, part 2, as well as six American novels: The Ambassadors, by Henry James; The Professor's House, by Willa Cather; The Mansion, by William Faulkner; The Angle of Repose, by Wallace Stegner; A Book of Common Prayer, by Joan Didion; and Jazz, by Toni Morrison. These seven works, though remarkably different, share the common features of the altersroman. Westervelt articulates the traits clearly, rests them on the psychological literature, and then shows in depth how the characteristics of the altersroman can enrich and more deeply inform our reading of a significant subset of modern literature that previously went unheralded. Readers can use Westervelt's analysis to identify altersromane in literature other than their own, and she begins this process by identifying exemplars written in other languages. Beyond Innocence, or the Altersroman in Modern Fiction introduces readers to the altersroman as a tool for classification and analysis and demonstrates the power and utility of that tool. It offers a meaningful and enriching complement to the more established category of the bildungsroman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Reviving Ophelia, a guide to wisdom, authenticity, and bliss for women as they age. Women growing older contend with ageism, misogyny, and loss. Yet as Mary Pipher shows, most older women are deeply happy and filled with gratitude for the gifts of life. Their struggles help them grow into the authentic, empathetic, and wise people they have always wanted to be. In Women Rowing North, Pipher offers a timely examination of the cultural and developmental issues women face as they age. Drawing on her own experience as daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, caregiver, clinical psychologist, and cultural anthropologist, she explores ways women can cultivate resilient responses to the challenges they face. "If we can keep our wits about us, think clearly, and manage our emotions skillfully," Pipher writes, "we will experience a joyous time of our lives. If we have planned carefully and packed properly, if we have good maps and guides, the journey can be transcendent."

The theoretical chapters are a model of elegantly styled accommodation; yet they brook no fudging of the issues, no comfortable ambiguities - Modern Fiction Studies The Transformation of the English Novel, 1890-1930: Studies in Hardy, Conrad, Joyce, Lawrence, Forster and Woolf is a provocative exploration of a crucial period in the development of the English novel, integrating critical theory, historical background and sophisticated close reading. Divided into two major sections, the first shows how historical and contextual material is essential for developing powerful readings. The second section is theoretical and speaks of the transformation in the way that we read and think about authors, readers, characters and form in the light of recent theory, offering an alternative to the deconstructive and Marxist trends in literary studies.

Book Shaw and Science Fiction

Download or read book Shaw and Science Fiction written by Milton T. Wolf and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaw's speculations about human destiny align him with many other writers of the time, and later, who forged a new genre of literature that ultimately took the name in 1928 of "science fiction." Ray Bradbury affirms Greg Bear's statement about the little-known, but significant, relationship that Bernard Shaw has with science fiction. Bradbury, who frequently emphasizes Shaw's influence on his own work, asks, "Isn't it obvious at last: Those that do not live in the future will be trapped and die in the past?" Susan Stone-Blackburn, comparing Shaw's Back to Methuselah with Olaf Stapledon's Last and First Men, discusses why science-fiction scholars have been reluctant to acknowledge Shaw's role in the genre. Tom Shippey examines aspects of Shaw's theory of Creative Evolution to show why many have dismissed Shaw's science fiction as insufficiently scientific. Surveying the science-fiction milieu, Ben P. Indick shows that while Shaw was not interested in writing science fiction per se, he knew the genre and how to use it. Jeffrey M. Wallmann chronicles the science-fiction techniques that Shaw foreshadowed. Rodelle Weintraub analyzes dream-related elements of the fantastic that Shaw frequently employed in his drama. John Barnes focuses on Shaw's "radical superman," a stock-in-trade of science fiction. Like H. G. Wells, Shaw understood that human intervention was becoming the dominant mechanism of evolution and that new approaches to theatrical drama would be required to convey the social and political impact of the scientific revolution. Elwira M. Grossman compares similar dilemmas facing Shaw and the Polish dramatist Witkacy. J. L. Wisenthal examines the utopian tradition that underlay the English literary experience, and Julie A. Sparks contrasts Karel Capek's anti-utopian concepts with Shaw's utopian vision. Also included is an 1887 lecture by Shaw entitled "Utopias," published here for the first time. Several of the contributors emphasize the significant influence that Shaw had on major science-fiction writers. Elizabeth Anne Hull explores Shaw's affinities with Arthur C. Clarke, John R. Pfeiffer discusses the many connections between Shaw and Ray Bradbury, and George Slusser explores Shaw and Robert A. Heinlein's "recurrent fascination with the possibilities of life extension." Like his friend Einstein, Shaw knew that imagination is more important than knowledge. Peter Gahan's article demonstrates that Shaw's ambition was to engage the reader's imagination, the only "sufficient backdrop for his vision." Also included are reviews of recent additions to Shavian scholarship, including the Shaw/Wells correspondence, and John R. Pfeiffer's "Continuing Checklist of Shaviana."
