One may, therefore, look to Finland as one Of the world's principal suppliers Of timber and lumber products. The lumber production in Finland has not yet reached its maximum and the country may be considered as one of the most promising lumber producers in Europe. The labor situation has passed through a very critical stage, but with the return of normal conditions and an ade uate supply of the necessities Of life, it is believed that the Finnish abor question W111 be satisfactorily settled. The activities Of the Finnish Lumber Exporters' Association is of particular interest to American shippers, because cooperation Of the Finnish lumber exporters has enabled them to sell their lumber to advantage, in spite of the fact that as much as board feet was stored in Finland when the armistice was signed. It is also of interest to note how the Finnish association has cooperated with the Swedish association Of lumber exporters. An important future problem for Finland is the shi ping ques tion. The present merchant marine Of Finland is ina equate, but other countries have already opened new direct steamship lines to several Of the most important markets for Finnish lumber, and it is believed that this circumstance will materially assist the Finnish exporters.10 forest resources and lumber industry OF finland. Excerpt: ...are added to the cost of the material. The resawing schedules given above may seem unsatisfactory to many mills, because in some cases the planed lumber produced may be somewhat scant. All of the above schedules are not in general use in Norway. It depends upon the markets and the customers of each mill to what extent they can employ the schedules. For instance, to cut three thicknesses of three-fourths inch stock from one batten 2 inches thick would in the majority of cases be considered inadvisable. It is claimed that the planed lumber resawn from rough stock has frequently been sent to the London market on consignment. In this market the lumber is sold at auction sales, and as the purchasers have an opportunity of inspecting the lumber before the purchase is made no claims are afterwards considered, but the prices for such scant stock are usually correspondingly low. The practice of shipping on consignment is discouraged in Norway. In regard to the planed lumber, it it generally required that the upper cutters must touch the back of each board. Otherwise the lumber is considered scant. If the lumber through some faulty resawing turns out scant, it is dressed down to the next size in preference to having it shipped along with other stock holding the required sizes. There is no provision in the Norwegian grading rules to the effect that the lower grades may be shipped scant. Cull stock, as well as first grade, must always hold ithe required measurements according to the grading rules. It may be said that the saving in raw material is larger in resawing narrow widths than wide stock. ECONOMIES IN RESAWING.
