Book Insects and Diseases of Mediterranean Forest Systems

Download or read book Insects and Diseases of Mediterranean Forest Systems written by Timothy D. Paine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect and disease issues are often specific to the Mediterranean forest systems rather than shared with the temperate forests. In addition to the specific native insects and diseases, the forests are subject to the invasion of exotic species. The forests are also at risk from high degrees of human activity, including changing patterns of forest fires, land management activities, intensive plantation forestry using introduced timber species from other Mediterranean climate zones, and atmospheric deposition. Combined with elements of global climate change that may disproportionately affect Mediterranean climate systems, this creates a number of significant management issues that are unique to the Mediterranean forests. It is our goal that the information contained in this volume will contribute to understanding the unique aspects of Mediterranean forest systems and to protecting these critical resources.

Book Impacts Monitoring and Management of Forest Pests and Diseases

Download or read book Impacts Monitoring and Management of Forest Pests and Diseases written by Young-Seuk Park and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest pests have diverse negative impacts on forestry economy, ecosystem services, biodiversity, and sustainable ecosystem management. The first step towards effectively managing forest pests would be to monitor their occurrence and assess their impact on forest ecosystems. The monitoring results can provide basic information for effective management strategies. The data from monitoring programs can result in the development of new methods for monitoring, assessing impact, and developing management techniques. This special issue aims to share information to assist in the effective management of forest pests, by understanding the responses of forest pests to natural and anthropogenic changes, and discussing new studies on the monitoring, assessment, and management of forest pests. The fourteen papers included in this issue focus on monitoring, assessing, and managing forest pests, including one editorial providing an overall idea of the monitoring, assessment and management of forest pests, two articles reviewing long-term changes in forest pests and forests, four papers focusing on the monitoring of forest pests, three papers on the assessment of forest pests, and four papers on the management of forest pests. These papers provide a better understanding of the structures and processes in forest ecosystems and fundamental information for the effective management of forest pests.

Book Forest Pest and Disease Management in Latin America

Download or read book Forest Pest and Disease Management in Latin America written by Sergio A. Estay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By providing multiple economic goods and ecosystem services, Latin American forests play a key role in the environmental, social and economic welfare of the region’s countries. From the tropical forests of Central America to the Mediterranean and temperate vegetation of the southern cone, these forests face a myriad of phytosanitary problems that negatively impact on both conservation efforts and forest industry. This book brings together the perspectives of several Latin American researchers on pest and disease management. Each chapter provides modern views of the status and management alternatives to problems as serious as the impact of introduced exotic insects and diseases on Pinus and Eucalyptus plantations throughout the continent, and the emergence of novel insect outbreaks in tropical and temperate native forests associated with global warming. It is a valuable guide for researchers and practitioners working on forest health in Latin America and around the world.

Download or read book Major Forest Insect and Disease Conditions in the United States 2015 written by Gary Man and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report on the major insect and disease conditions of the Nation's forests represents the 65th annual report prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service. The report focuses on 19 major insects and diseases that annually cause defoliation and mortality in U.S. forests.Insects and diseases play critical roles in maintaining healthy, resilient ecosystems, but they are also among the most serious environmental and economic threats to the millions of acres of forests and urban treed areas in America. Natural and anthropogenic stressors will continue to influence the establishment, spread, and impacts of insects and diseases on forests. Tree species may be positively or negatively impacted by these changes, altering the array of products and services derived from forested lands, including timber, recreation, clean water, energy, wildlife habitat, and jobs. To understand how conditions are changing and to protect species, forests are surveyed for insect and disease extent and intensity so that Federal and State agencies and other stakeholders can prioritize future actions and ensure forests remain resilient and sustainable into the future. The overall mortality caused by insects and diseases varies by year and by pest.
