Book A Guide to the Best Fiction English and American

Download or read book A Guide to the Best Fiction English and American written by Ernest Albert Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Fiction, English and American: Including Translations From Foreign Languages The object has been to supply as complete a list as might be of the most notable prose fiction in English, with as much characterization of the contents, nature, and style of each book as would go into a few lines of print. Manifestly, such a list must include along with the very best many novels that cannot be described as even among the second-best. It is a guide, not an autocratic proclamation that such and such are the world's best novels, and that all the rest are inferior. A proclamation of that sort would instantly meet with the same fate as sooner or later has befallen certain too authoritative pronouncements, whose authors have singled out what they considered the best books without reflecting that best is a relative term, relative, that is to say, not only to the other things with which there is a comparison, but also to the purposes of the books and the needs of readers. Best really means most suitable for some individual or for promoting some particular purpose. It is hoped in the present case that those using the Guide will be enabled to see for themselves what novels are recognized by most intelligent people as the best, and how and why they are the best, and also what others come nearest to them in interest and artistic merit. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Fiction in English Where American novels have been published in England with an altered title, or English novels with an American title, the spurious desig nation is quoted in the note.' The original titles Of foreign works of fiction are given in italics after the English title, In most cases where they are not practically identical, with the exception of Russian and other languages in which the transliteration of titles is not uniform and the information would be of trifling value to the ordinary reader. It is hoped that in this and other points a fair degree of accuracy has been attained, but the possibilities of error in such a compilation as the present are innumerable, and the writer can only trust that his faults Of omission and commission are not serious, and that attention will be called thereto in order that they may be reduced in a future edition. It should be noted that books published since 3ist December, 191 I, do not come within his present purview. Book A Descriptive Guide to the Best Fiction

Download or read book A Descriptive Guide to the Best Fiction written by Ernest A. Baker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive Guide to the Best Fiction: British and American; Including Translations From Foreign Languages Containing About 4, 500 References; With Copious Indexes and a Historical Appendix The object of this book is to supply a fairly complete list of the best prose fiction in English, including, not all that interests students, but all that the ordinary reader is likely to care about, with as much description of matter and style, for the guidance of readers, as can be condensed into a few lines of print for each book. It does not claim to be a bibliography. This would have involved reference to the actual title-pages of first editions; such bibliographical accuracy is not necessary in a mere guide for readers. Long titles are usually abbreviated; sub-titles, when they are descriptive, often appear in the note. The entries are arranged first in main divisions according to nationalities of writers, and then in the chronological order of publication, so far as consists with easy reference. Consequently this should be a useful work of reference for students of literary history. It may be thought that the recent periods are numerically over-represented as compared with the earlier, even if we have regard to the immensity of the modern "output" of fiction. No doubt this is so, if we pay strict attention to literary merit; but every age is naturally most interested in contemporary writers. In a future edition, doubtless, a large proportion of these recent authors will drop out, and their places will be occupied by others quite as ephemeral. In the notes, the aim has been to subordinate criticism to description. The annotator has not sought to appraise the literary value of the books dealt with. Yet, in order to convey as dear an impression as he was able of the particular species, character and style of each Novel, he has not refrained, where he has thought it needful, from offering what may be considered as critical observations on books and authors. Book English Literature

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature: An Introduction and Guide to the Best English Books; A Handbook for Schools and Readers All my life I have loved, owned, collected and read books. The motive back of these activities has not, however, been any desire on my part to improve my mind. Being satisfied with my mind as it is, I have read in the spirit in which boys play ball, girls dress their dolls, men attend prize fights, and women gossip about their neigh bors. I have read, in other words, for fun; and I have found in the collection, the ownership, and the perusal of books a source of pleasure which, unlike most pleasures, is not only inexpensive and harmless but has grown deeper with time. The book embodies the actual experience of teachers in the classroom, in that the analyses of most of the volumes studied and the accompanying questions have been prepared by men and women who have themselves edited one or more of the Classics and have actually taught them.
