An attempt has also been made to measure its impact on Gross Domestic Product and Balance of Trade during the post WTO regime. The study found that there is an increase in Indian merchandise exports during the post WTO Period from 1995-96 to 2009-10 but it could not reduce the trade deficit. On the basis of analysis, we recommend that there is a need to review the foreign trade policy followed during the post reforms/WTO Regime. The study further recommends that the policy makers should think on an alternative model of development based on the vast domestic market.

Book Indian Economy and the WTO

Download or read book Indian Economy and the WTO written by Vibha Mathur and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides glimpses of the past, present and future of the Indian economy. It traces the evolution and explains the present structure of different sectors of the Indian economy. This work is important to understand the impact of new challenges posed by the WTO regime. Though developing countries make up three-fourth of WTO membership and by their vote can in theory influence the agenda and outcome of trade negotiations, they have hardly used this numerical superiority to their advantage. Most developing countries are, in one way or another, dependent on the US, EU, or Japan in terms of imports, exports, aid and security. India is bracing fast to meet these challenges. The unshackling of the Indian economy, though slow, has to be seen in the context of the emerging world economic scenario.
