Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is assumed that American undergraduates who study abroad derive unique benefits from the experience, until now its actual impact has not been assessed. This book, which presents the findings of a long-term evaluation project, provides the kind of systematic and comprehensive data needed to document and give future guidance to programs of study abroad. Using comparative measures, the authors examine the effects of overseas study in terms of education, career, personal satisfaction, and cultural values. Undergraduates in four U.S. college and university programs involving nearly thirty European institutions were chosen for the study. The focus of the research is the role of study abroad in students' acquisition of foreign language proficiency, knowledge of and concern for foreign cultures and international issues, attitudes toward their home country and its values, and career objectives and accomplishments. Student profiles indicate consistent patterns in motivation, achievement, and satisfaction that relate to the experience abroad. In their conclusion, the authors look at the implications of their findings in the context of our times and society and offer suggestions for some new directions for study abroad in the coming years. This analysis will be relevant for educational decision-makers, funding organizations, government, and the research community.

Book America Calling

Download or read book America Calling written by Rajika Bhandari and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in middle-class India, Rajika Bhandari has seen generations of her family look westward, where an American education means status and success. But she resists the lure of America because those who left never return—they all become flies trapped in honey in a land of opportunity. As a young woman, however, she finds herself heading to a US university to study, following her heart and a relationship. When that relationship ends and she fails in her attempt to move back to India as a foreign-educated woman, she returns to the US and finds herself in a job where the personal is political and professional: she is immersed in the lives of international students who come to America from over 200 countries, the universities that attract them, and the tangled web of immigration that a student must navigate. An unflinching and insightful narrative that explores the global appeal of a Made in America education that is a bridge to America’s successful past and to its future, America Calling is both a deeply personal story of Bhandari’s search for her place and voice, and an incisive analysis of America’s relationship with the rest of the world through the most powerful tool of diplomacy: education. At a time of growing nationalism, a turning inward, and fear of the “other,” America Calling is ultimately a call to action to keep America’s borders—and minds—open.

Book excerpt: Study Abroad in the USA! This book is about the overlooked value of study abroad and the value of studying in the USA. Learn about the "global success skills" that international students who want to study in the USA or other western countries need to know prior to departure and upon arrival. This book covers the soft skills that no other book focuses on and is usually overlooked but is just as important as the hard skills and classroom knowledge. Learn about why making friends with Americans is the biggest challenge for foreign students and if they prepare and plan their arrival on campus with more serious thought, how they can greatly improve their overall study abroad experience and maximize their entire time in the US. This book focuses on life and social skills that will help foreign students be more successful, confident, and overall happier in the US. It will explain why international students have to be more assertive and leave their comfort zone in class and to make friends with other international students and American students. How an American education will help them acquire the global life skills of critical thinking, problem-solving, assertiveness, leadership, and active communication/listening. Also covered are topics to prepare and be aware of when interacting with Americans, for example, sense of humor, conversation topics, social skills, small talk, being curious, spontaneity and improvisation, etc. The different topics covered in this book are success skills not only for study abroad but for life in general. Study abroad offers international students the platform and opportunity to experiment and reinvent themselves, to be able to explore to reach their full potential. The US university education system helps international students to become global citizens in regards to independent thinking, discussion and debate in class, engaging presentations, and intercultural competency. This book will help plant the seeds of success for international students who study in the US, but in the end as the book concludes, true success in the US is really all up to them. They have the final say on whether they follow through or not. If the international student follows through closely on what this book emphasizes, there is a very good chance that he/she will have many friends, become much more outgoing and assertive, and achieve overall success. Study abroad is a life-changing experience. And the international student who studies in the US will be affected in positive ways that one would never have imagined. Be a risk-taker! Follow your dream! Study abroad in the USA!

Book Integrating Study Abroad Into the Undergraduate Liberal Arts Curriculum

Download or read book Integrating Study Abroad Into the Undergraduate Liberal Arts Curriculum written by Barbara B. Burn and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991-05-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with an issue of increasing concern to college educators--the relationship of study abroad to the home campus curriculum. All too often, American undergraduates find that their study abroad experience has little relation to their home campus studies. The eight case studies presented herein provide the insight necessary to help college educators and administrators successfully internationalize their students' degree programs. The contributors describe activities undertaken at eight colleges and universities as part of the Articulation Project. Launched in January 1987, the project was designed first to identify the factors, circumstances, and attitudes that prevent study abroad from being an important and integral part of the total undergraduate degree program. A second goal was to identify and encourage institutional strategies and policies aimed at eliminating or at least reducing these obstacles. The underlying aim of the project and the goal of this collective work is to strengthen international studies and encourage the internationalization of undergraduate education in the United States by making study abroad more important to and recognized within it. Educators committed to these ideals will find this volume essential reading.
