Download or read book Foreign Language Teaching in Turkey Problems and new Approaches written by Ufuk Atalay and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2021 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, Selçuk University (Faculty of Letters), language: English, abstract: This paper looks into the intricate landscape of foreign language education in Turkey, shedding light on its historical trajectory, challenges, and potential avenues for reform. The essence of language as a tool of communication is explored, emphasizing its role in conveying thoughts and emotions. The acquisition of a foreign language is positioned as not only an understanding of one's heritage but also an immersion into diverse cultures. The discussion on foreign language education in Turkey unveils a persistent dilemma rooted in the educational system's historical development, diagnostic phases, and bureaucratic complexities. The reluctance of educators to adopt innovative methods compounds the issue. The evolution of teaching methods, from behaviorist to cognitive, is examined, showcasing a shift from mechanical learning to holistic cognition-based approaches. Innovation in education is presented as intentional change, encompassing factors like dissatisfaction with the status quo, desired outcomes, and resource investment. The innovation process is mapped out, involving scouting, input, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The relevance of each phase in transforming education is underlined. Current trends in Turkish education reveal a preference for traditional methods despite the global shift towards constructivism. The lack of integration between theoretical concepts and practical implementation is noted. The importance of foreign language proficiency is underestimated due to its absence in national examinations. The impact of early language acquisition and the diminishing ease of learning with age are acknowledged. EUROSTAT research and PISA results highlight Turkey's low foreign language proficiency, accentuating the need for urgent reforms. The decline in proficiency over time underscores the pressing need for comprehensive strategies. However, the situation in underdeveloped countries is similar to that of Turkey, so the issues and solutions will also show similarities. Turkey has been presented as just one example.

Book excerpt: In the last two decades, the field of language and literature teaching has experienced considerable growth as a result of the wide array of new methodological avenues that have arisen from different angles. This paradigm shift has paved the way for the integration of newly conceived didactic resources such as the mediation of social networks for learning language or the interdisciplinarity of culturally mediated language education. It is crucial to understand this shift in order to ensure students receive the best education possible. New Approaches to the Investigation of Language Teaching and Literature presents an overview of the ongoing methodological tools, practices, research designs, and strategies used in language and literature teaching and provides education researchers and practitioners with empirically sustained evidence of teaching strategies that may be implemented in language education. Covering key topics such as language skills, adult learners, digital literacy, and learning aids, this reference work is ideal for researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners, educators, and students.

Book excerpt: Problem statement: In the globalizing world, second language/foreign language has gained a great importance. The importance of the foreign language teaching has increased in our time in which knowing a foreign language has deviated from being a specialty and become a feature that everyone must have. For that purpose, teachers must know the characteristics of the learners very well and must enrich the learning environment with different techniques and materials in accordance with the environment facilities. Approach: In this study, it has been aimed to determine the language teaching strategies and class practices of the teachers who taught students of foreign origin in Turkey Turkish as a foreign language. To that end, interview and observation forms have been prepared. The content analysis of the data obtained with interview and observation forms has been conducted in the scope of qualitative research approach. Results: Teachers are not capable of giving an adequate language education due to such reasons as they did not receive a special education with the purpose of teaching Turkish as a foreign language and they preferred traditional methods instead of modern strategy and methods. Conclusions/Recommendations: In order to conduct language education in Turkey in accordance with the international norms, importance must be attached to the training of qualified language teachers, the significance of teaching Turkish as a foreign language must be discussed in academic environments and researches must be carried out.

This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing attention to the threats that an overreliance on teaching techniques poses for teacher creativity, student voice, and the well-being of democracy, Moving beyond Technicism in English-Language Teacher Education advocates a critical approach to education. Using the author’s own personal experiences, this book offers a critical analysis of the technicist English-language teacher education programs introduced by Turkey’s Council of Higher Education in the neoliberal period. Beginning with the implementation of critical education at the Village Institutes in the early years of the Republic of Turkey, the book documents how teacher education practices in Turkey evolved from liberatory to mechanic with the influence of the Cold War. By demonstrating the author’s own critical teacher education practices, the book explores the impact of critical teacher education on pre-service and in-service teachers’ perceptions and practice. Highlighting the ethical responsibilities of educators, the book calls for a critical, democratic, and humanizing approach to teacher preparation.
