Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Birds in Freedom Captivity I Do not known which gives me the greatest pleasure of two things, namely, the keeping of birds as pets, or the representation of them in sketches. In attempting to be author and artist in one, both these pleasures have been mine; for in writing about my birds I have kept them over again, especially as far as those are concerned which are but memories; and in drawing them, I have been able to understand them better, and to provide myself with something in the way of a lasting souvenir. And having done so, a desire has come to me to invite others to share the delights of this experience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Notes, 1923, Vol. 6: The Journal of the Foreign Bird Club, for the Study of All Species of Birds in Freedom and Captivity In bird notes for 1913 I gave a few notes on the breeding Of Turtle Dove hybrids, etc.. A brief summary Of same being that in the spring of 1913 a first cross hybrid male dove (the produce of a d Turtle and a 9 Barbary Dove) mated with a Common Barbary hen and bred and reared three young. Two being fawn-coloured like an ordinary Barbary Dove. And one grey (a male) like the ground colour of the parent hybrid father, all with a Slight distinguishing mark in the beak. This mark, which enabled me to distinguish my hybrid fawns from pure Barbary Doves, was the red colour Of the eshy base or gape of beak. They also showed a slight fullness later. In the width Of the neck rings, especially at the Sides. But the rings met at the back of neck just as in the Common Barbary. In 1914 I mated this young grey male to a common Barbary hen, my net result being two youngsters, one grey and one fawn; these were indistinguishable from the type of the true Barbary, in every way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Notes, Vol. 7: The Journal of the Foreign Bird Club, for the Study of All Species of Birds in Freedom and Captivity With this issue Vol. VII is completed. During the year the war has raged, but in spite of the arduous and pre-occupied times, a high standard has been maintained. Members will, I think, agree that 1916 compares favourably with former years. When the next roll appears many names will be missing of those who have given their lives for King and Country. The Council wish to thank all who have contributed to the success of the past year, either by writing articles, generous donations to the Illustration Fund, or by introducing new members, and trust that many more will so assist during 1917. The Honorary Editors task has been a heavy one, and lie deserves all the help you can give. May we remind members that the prompt payment of subscriptions will greatly help the Honorary Secretary, whose spare time to give to the work is very limited indeed, owing to the war. Twenty-nine new members have been added during the year, and if all members will do a little (what they can), the coming year should be as. if not more so, successful as the past. Download or read book The Avicultural Magazine Vol 3 written by D. Seth-Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 3: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society for the Study of Foreign and British Birds in Freedom and Captivity Mr. Bonhote then acted as one of the Secretaries for the Congress. It is universally admitted that much of the success of this important event was due to the excellence of the arrangements. The Congress was attended by many officers and other members of this Society. Mr. Seth-Smith acted as official delegate for the Society, and read a paper entitled "The Importance of Aviculture as an aid to the study of Ornithology." We would call attention to the work that has been accomplished by members in recording the breeding habits of species which are not known to have bred in captivity in this country before: the Rev. C. D. Farrar has successfully reared young of the White-throated Finch (Spernophila albigularis); Sir William Ingram, Bart., the Bare-throated Francolin (Pternistes leucoscepus), and Mr. D. Seth-Smith the Varied Bustard Quail (Turnix varia) and the Australian Swamp Quail (Syn cus australis). Mention may also be made of the breeding of some interesting hybrids; Dr. Butler has reared a hybrid Ouzel between Merula boulboul and M. merula; Mr. Fasey, hybrid Parrakeets between Platycercus elegans and Barnardius semitorquatus; and Mr. Seth-Smith hybrid Song-Sparrows between Zonotrichia leucophrys and Z. pileata; while a Duck, bred this year by Mr. Bonhote contains the blood of no less than five species, viz., Anas boscas, melleri, p cilorhyncha, superciliosa, and Dafila acuta, an event hitherto unknown in the annals of hybridism. We would urge our members to do their best to persuade all their friends who may be interested in birds to join the Avicultural Society. Finally our thanks are due to the members of the Executive Committee, who have worked hard to promote the welfare of the Society.
