Download or read book Foreign Capital Flows and Economic Growth in Pakistan written by Sharafat Ali and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pakistan economy has received large inflows of foreign capital, in shape of foreign debt, FDI and worker's remittances, over the years. The present study is focused on the examination of effects of these flows on economic growth in Pakistan. Johansen cointegration technique and Granger causality test has been used for the analysis for the sample period of 1972-2013. The results reveal negative impacts of these flows on economic growth of the economy in long run. Short run analysis confirmed unidirectional causality running from debt service, FDI, inflation and literacy rate to growth. Causality from domestic investment is not concluded but it run from growth to domestic investment. Bidirectional causality between remittances and growth has been found. The analysis suggests some policy recommendations such as domestic resource mobilization, building of physical infrastructure, financial development, suitable macroeconomic framework for price stability and improvement in human capital for the long run growth of the economy.

This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, grade: A-, GC University (Department of Economics), course: M. Phil Economics, language: English, abstract: The topic of Foreign Capital Inflows (FCI) to Pakistan got much attention in empirical literature, but the existing literature on FCI about Pakistan mostly used the customary econometric tools like OLS, 2SLS, FIML and 3SLS for analysis. However, we know that most of the macroeconomic variables are non-stationary, which mandates the re-examination of the past studies using new time-series tools like cointegartion and ECM. Thus, the present book re-examines the macroeconomic role of Foreign Capital Inflows (FCI) in Pakistan through applying vector error correction model (VECM) on annual time-series data for the period of 1972-2006. The present study does not find any evidence for direct positive impact of aggregate FCI on GDP growth and Investment (capital formation). However, the study finds the positive (complementary) relationship between FCI and domestic saving, thus suggesting an indirect positive impact of FCI on GDP through supplementing domestic resources. These results seem contradicting i.e. positive relation with domestic savings but negative linkages with investment and growth. However, we can interpret it as that FCI is supplementing the domestic resources and there is a need and justification for FCI in Pakistan due the shortage of domestic savings. But, these inflows of foreign capital are not transforming in the productive investment and thus not boosting economic growth. As this study shows that most of FCI are of non-investment (non FDI) type and are concentrated in the selected non-export-oriented and less-employment-generating sectors. In addition, the present study finds that exchange rate depreciation and current account deficit causes more inflows of foreign capital in Pakistan. While FCI also results in increasing the import of goods and services in P

Book excerpt: Given contrasting evidence in the literature pertaining to the impact of Foreign Direct Investment on the host country's economy, we take the case of Pakistan and test the said association for this nation. The data used for this study has spanned over the period of 1981 till 2010. Besides FDI, four other variables including Debt, Trade, Inflation and Domestic Investment have been included in the study, to regress upon GDP of this country. The methodology to test the impact of these variables on Pakistan's economy has been limited to the least squares method. The co-integration of the variables has been ascertained through application of Augmented Dickey Fuller Test and is found to hold in the long run. Our findings indicate that Pakistan's economic performance is negatively affected by foreign investment while its domestic investment has benefitted its economy. Moreover, the nation's debt, trade and inflation have found to have negative impact on its GDP.

The savings rate in Pakistan is sensitive to per capita income, dependency ratio, real interest rate and foreign capital inflows. Dependency ratio and foreign capital inflows exert a depressing effect on savings while income and real interest rate have a positive effect. Realistic interest rate policies in the context of liberalized financial markets are required to mobilize greater savings.

For this purpose, time series data from 1976-2015 has been collected from State Bank of Pakistan, World Bank and Economic Survey of Pakistan. Dependent variable used as Economic Growth (Gross Domestic Product Growth Rate (GDPGR) and independent variables as FDI, Gross Domestic Educational Expenditure (GDEX), Domestic Capital (KD), Openness to Trade (OPT), External Debt (EXD) and Labour Participation Rate (LPR). The results of the study indicate that the FDI has significant positive impact on Economic Growth of Pakistan in short run whereas; it has insignificant negative impact on long rum at 5% significant level. Furthermore, the statistical results show that economic growth has significant impact on GDEX, OPT, EXD, KD and Insignificant impact on FDI and LPR. Book Attracting Foreign Direct Investment in Pakistan

Download or read book Attracting Foreign Direct Investment in Pakistan written by Sakina Lavingia and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private sector investment has become one of the most essential sources of international capital flows to developing countries. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as one type of private sector investment has the potential to drive economic growth and development. Understanding the factors that motivate or deter foreign investors from investing in a developing country therefore is crucial. This thesis examines the particular case of Pakistan and analyzes internal and external factors that have affected the inclines and declines in inflows of FDI to the country between 2000 and 2014. By performing a comparative sectoral analysis, this thesis examines the effects of government efficacy, national security, and global levels of FDI inflows on FDI inflows on three distinct sectors in Pakistan: Energy, Telecommunications, and Financial Services. The thesis argues that a rapidly deteriorating domestic situation post-2008 due to weakened governance and limited security provision within the country has increased the perceived levels of risk and uncertainty associated with investing in Pakistan. This has resulted in a sharp decline in FDI inflows to the country.
