Book The Evolution of Foreign Banking Institutions in the United States

Download or read book The Evolution of Foreign Banking Institutions in the United States written by Faramarz Damanpour and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-01-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Damanpour provides a unique insight into international finance and banking. Often books of this nature are either too theoretical or quantitative in nature. This book is a blend of both areas and thus becomes a useful tool . . . . I would recommend this book to anyone involved in international business irrespective of their specialized interest. Brian A. Reynolds, Ph.D. Director, Center for International Business National College of Education This groundbreaking study analyzes the rapid growth of foreign banking activity in the United States over the course of the past two decades and evaluates the potential impact of this development on United States banking institutions. The author brings together a substantial amount of information and data not previously available in one source to examine both the overall status of foreign banks in the United States and the structural components of international banks and lending institutions. Unlike those who see the influx of foreign banking in strictly negative terms, Damanpour demonstrates some positive aspects of the situation including the contribution of foreign banks to general improvement in the U.S. economy, increased competition in the banking industry, the provision of a flow of capital into U.S. balance of payments capital accounts, and the introduction of innovative techniques and pricing structures. Damanpour begins by tracing the evolution of foreign banking and the financial goals of key players. He goes on to illustrate the institutional structure of international banking, detailing the types of foreign banking offices that have been established in this country. Subsequent chapters address the legal environment of foreign banking, international financial markets, U.S. international lending institutions, and such issues as the motivation behind international banking market structure and activities of foreign banks and major foreign banking concerns in the United States. The final chapters look at developments in international trade and banking and assess the impact of foreign banks and their future prospects. Written in a style accessible to both students and practitioners, this is an excellent text for courses in international finance, business, and political science programs as well as an important source of background information for members of the banking community concerned with developing appropriate responses to the increased foreign presence on the U.S. banking scene. Numerous tables enhance the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper introduces a comprehensive database on bank ownership for 137 countries over 1995-2009, and reviews foreign bank behavior and impact. It documents substantial increases in foreign bank presence, with many more home and host countries. Current market shares of foreign banks average 20 percent in OECD countries and 50 percent elsewhere. Foreign banks have higher capital and more liquidity, but lower profitability than domestic banks do. Only in developing countries is foreign bank presence negatively related with domestic credit creation. During the global crisis foreign banks reduced credit more compared to domestic banks, except when they dominated the host banking systems.

Book The Law and Practice of International Banking

Download or read book The Law and Practice of International Banking written by Charles Proctor and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this major reference work on banking law continues to provide authoritative analysis of current practice and the law that applies to it. Known for its broad coverage including topics such as syndicated loans, security structures, derivative products and mis-selling claims, the book tackles areas which have particular relevance to current practice. Amongst these are cross-border matters such as world-wide freezing injunctions, foreign disclosure orders, the bankers' duty of confidentiality and the impact of sanctions on banking transactions. In particular, the book provides detailed examination of various matters arising out of the Lehman collapse and the failure of the Icelandic banking system. The second edition reviews a significant accumulation of case law in these areas. Reflecting the continued growth of the Islamic finance market, there is also a detailed section on this highly specialized but increasingly important area. The new edition provides detailed consideration of the new UK and EU regulatory regimes, analyzing the respective responsibilities of the PRA and the FCA, and the establishment of new banking authorities in the EU. A separate chapter examines the new capital adequacy and liquidity regimes that will apply to banks in the wake of Basel III. It also reflects on the impact of the crisis following on from the initial assessments made in the first edition. The book examines extensively the new regimes for "ring-fencing" of retail banking business and for the resolution of failing banks, introduced at both the UK and EU levels. The text also includes a new chapter examining the challenges that the banking system would face in the event that a Member State elected to withdraw from the Eurozone - a fate which appeared to hang over Greece during the crisis and which could recur if the single currency zone faces renewed strains. Written by the editor of the leading work on monetary law, Mann on the Legal Aspect of Money, 7e, this is the most comprehensive assessment of current banking practice and the law that applies to it. It is a work of great scholarship set in practical context and benefits from the consistency and rigorousness of approach that a single author can provide.

Book Handbook of International Banking

Download or read book Handbook of International Banking written by A. W. Mullineux and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Handbook is especially recommended to MBA students and faculty and belongs in the reference collections of academic and research libraries. Although each chapter may serve as a self-contained unit, readers will want to look at the larger picture by comparing and contrasting articles found in each part of the work. It should prove to be a helpful source for those studying international banking, economics and finance, and international business.' – Lucy Heckman, American Reference Books Annual 2004 The Handbook of International Banking provides a clearly accessible source of reference material, covering the main developments that reveal how the internationalization and globalization of banking have developed over recent decades to the present, and analyses the creation of a new global financial architecture. The Handbook is the first of its kind in the area of international banking with contributions from leading specialists in their respective fields, often with remarkable experience in academia or professional practice. The material is provided mainly in the form of self-contained surveys, which trace the main developments in a well-defined topic, together with specific references to journal articles and working papers. Some contributions, however, disseminate new empirical findings especially where competing paradigms are evaluated. The Handbook is divided into four areas of interest. The first deals with the globalization of banking and continues on to banking structures and functions. The authors then focus on banking risks, crises and regulation and finally the evolving international financial architecture. Designed to serve as a source of supplementary reading and inspiration, the Handbook is suited to a range of courses in banking and finance including post-experience and in-house programmes for bankers and other financial services practitioners. This outstanding volume will become essential reference for policymakers, financial practitioners as well as academics and researchers in the field.

Download or read book Global Development Finance 2006 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "International private capital flows to developing countries reached a record net level of $491 billion in 2005. This surge in private capital flows offers national and international policy makers a major opportunity to bolster development efforts if they can successfully meet three challenges. The first is to ensure that more countries, especially poorer ones, enhance their access to developmentally beneficial international capital through improvements in their macroeconomic performance, investment climate, and use of aid. The second is to avoid sudden capital flow reversals by redressing global imbalances through policies that recognize the growing interdependencies between developed and developing countries' financial and exchange rate relations in the determination of global financial liquidity and asset price movements. And the third is to ensure that development finance, both official and private, is managed judiciously to meet the development goals of recipient countries while promoting greater engagement with global financial markets. These are the themes and concerns of this year's edition of Global Development Finance. Vol I. Anlaysis and Statistical Appendix reviews recent trends in financial flows to developing countries. Vol II. Summary and Country Tables* includes comprehensive data for 138 countries, as well as summary data for regions and income groups."

This volume discusses topics that include: the landscape of cross-border bank activity, the resulting competitive implications, emerging challenges for prudential regulation, and more. Cross-border banking, while having the potential for a more efficient financial sector, also creates potential challenges for bank supervisors and regulators. It requires cooperation by regulatory authorities across jurisdictions and a clear delineation of authority and responsibility. That delineation is typically not present and regulatory authorities often have significantly different incentives to respond when cross-border-active banks encounter difficulties. Most of these issues have only begun to be seriously evaluated. This volume, one of the first attempts to address these issues, brings together experts and regulators from different countries. The wide range of topics discussed include: the current landscape of cross-border bank activity, the resulting competitive implications, emerging challenges for prudential regulation, safety net concerns, failure resolution issues, and the potential future evolution of international banking.
