Book Force Protection Air Force Doctrine Document AFDD 3 10

Download or read book Force Protection Air Force Doctrine Document AFDD 3 10 written by U.s. Air Force and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-11-07 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Force Doctrine Document (AFDD) 3-10, “Force Protection,” is the Air Force's operational level doctrinal publication on force protection. Force protection supports the core function of Agile Combat Support, and its supporting capability of “Protect the Force.” Protecting Air Force personnel and resources is critical to the Service's ability to perform its mission. Due to the increased lethality of international and domestic threats, it is imperative the Air Force take strong measures to protect our personnel and installations, both at home and abroad. How the Air Force protects its forces is critical to global engagement. An air and space expeditionary task force poised to respond to global taskings within hours must establish the means and will to fully protect its forces. Commanders at all levels must have an effective force protection program. Commanders are responsible for protecting their people and the warfighting resources necessary to perform any military operation. We are obligated by the moral necessity of protecting our Airmen to ensure force protection is a part of Air Force culture. The Air Force must continue to develop and refine doctrine that promotes the most effective way to achieve force protection. Understanding and using this doctrine will help ensure the successful protection of our people and resources. Chapter 1, Force Protection Fundamentals, defines force protection for the Air Force and describes how the Air Force views force protection as compared to the multinational and joint views. It describes the basic features of force protection and provides a description of the military challenges faced by commanders and Airmen responsible for force protection, the unique perspective they provide, and general procedures that guide their actions. Chapter 2, Command Responsibilities for Force Protection, describes command relationships when addressing force protection concerns and illustrates how Air Force forces are presented to a joint force commander as part of the commander of Air Force forces' air and space expeditionary task force. It also shows how these relationships integrate into ongoing operations conducted by other national-level US government agencies and host nation counterparts, and describes legal considerations for force protection. Chapter 3, Threats and Hazards to the Air Force Mission, describes the many threats and hazards faced by Air Force personnel and identifies the various levels of threat that exist throughout the range of military operations. It further discusses Department of Defense terrorism threat levels assessed by the Defense Intelligence Agency as well as force protection conditions as used by geographic combatant commanders. It provides a discussion of threat objectives and hazard effects. Chapter 4, Force Protection Planning, introduces risk management as a process to assist decision makers in reducing or offsetting risks. It gives an overview of the process; identifies the goals, key aspects, and principle concepts of the process; and provides general guidelines for applying the process. The chapter discusses force protection planning considerations, describing the direct relationship between force protection and risk management. Chapter 5, The Force Protection Community, discusses the concepts of integrated defense, emergency management, the critical infrastructure program, and force protection effects.

Book Force Protection for Deployed Air Force Resources

Download or read book Force Protection for Deployed Air Force Resources written by Alfred M. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the Khobar Towers bombing, in June 1996, "force protection" was not a wholesale term in the Air Force. Antiterrorism was the expression used to describe measures taken to deter terrorist attacks and protect installations. Force protection is not a synonym for antiterrorism. Instead force protection is a larger effort designed to provide comprehensive security for personnel and resources with antiterrorism being a subset. This paper will canvass force protection measures against ground attacks from strategic to tactical levels for Air Force personnel and resources in the U.S. Central Command theater of operations.

Book Defending Air Bases in an Age of Insurgency

Download or read book Defending Air Bases in an Age of Insurgency written by Shannon Caudill and published by Military Bookshop. This book was released on 2014-08 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology discusses the converging operational issues of air base defense and counterinsurgency. It explores the diverse challenges associated with defending air assets and joint personnel in a counterinsurgency environment. The authors are primarily Air Force officers from security forces, intelligence, and the office of special investigations, but works are included from a US Air Force pilot and a Canadian air force officer. The authors examine lessons from Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other conflicts as they relate to securing air bases and sustaining air operations in a high-threat counterinsurgency environment. The essays review the capabilities, doctrine, tactics, and training needed in base defense operations and recommend ways in which to build a strong, synchronized ground defense partnership with joint and combined forces. The authors offer recommendations on the development of combat leaders with the depth of knowledge, tactical and operational skill sets, and counterinsurgency mind set necessary to be effective in the modern asymmetric battlefield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the defense organizational responses to the emergence of air and space as warfighting domains and, using these experiences as points of comparison, applies the same logic to consider the question: Should the Department of Defense create an independent US Cyber Force? The author determines that the Army Air Forces had achieved de facto independent status within the War Department by 1942, but airpower advocates continued to press for separation to more effectively advocate for budget share. In 1947 five forces aligned for the first time to support separating air forces from the army: airpower had proven successful in recent combat during World War II; the Army Air Forces had matured into an autonomous institution capable of independence; Army and War Department leadership actively supported a separate airpower service; vigorous Presidential support emerged for airpower to have organizational parity; and a comprehensive reorganization of nation's security apparatus was underway. In contrast, none of these factors were present when the Space Commission elected not to recommend the creation of an independent space force in 2001. With respect to cyber forces, only one of the five factors, broader national security reform, is partially met. As a result, creation of an independent cyber service appears unlikely in the near term.It took over 40 years of military experience with the air weapon and two global wars for the United States Congress to establish an independent United States Air Force. In the same way that organizational independence strengthened airpower, military space operations would benefit greatly from organizational differentiation, independent doctrine and leadership development, and tailored administrative support. The lack of a credible existential threat to national security from that domain, however, has hindered the effort to make the leap to an independent space corps or force. Finding an insufficient and incoherent cadre of space leaders and doctrine in 2001, the Space Commission nudged the Air Force bureaucracy down a path which may in the future be more conducive to organizational independence for space power. At present, none of the five critical factors for separation as identified analysis of Air Force independence align in favor of a separate cyber service. First, there is no recent record of cyberspace combat success that compares in scope or impact to that of airpower in World War II. Second, unlike the cohesive Army Air Forces which formed the corpus of the United States Air Force upon its creation in 1947, cyberspace forces today are spread throughout the four existing services.Third, none of the existing services has indicated a willingness to cede its role in the cyberspace mission, and the resources currently allocated to it, to form a cyber service. In contrast, Army and War Department leadership in 1947 actively supported the transfer of resources necessary to create the United States Air Force. Fourth, the President's cyberspace policy takes no position on the internal Department of Defense organizational construct; unlike in the case for airpower, when President Truman unequivocally advocated for a separate Air Force. The case for the fifth factor, comprehensive national security reorganization, is less straightforward. While several defense-reform efforts are presently underway in Congress with at least a modicum of support from the Defense Secretary, it is unclear if they will approach the transformative scope of the 1947 reorganization which birthed the Air Force. Nevertheless, with none of the other four factors aligned in favor of cyber independence at this time, creation of a cyber service appears highly unlikely in the near term.
