Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 450 page book is a culmination of 5 years of organized survey by amateur and professional birders, a biological survey effort unique in the history of wildlife study in northwestern California. The atlas is a collection of distribution maps and narrative accounts for each of the 181 species found to breed in Humboldt County from 1995-1999. Results of the five-year snapshol are fully discussed, with analysis of historical and atlas-period breeding status; description of landscapes and habitats used by each species; landform, vegetation, and other maps; conservation concerns; and a digest of the breeding evidence reported. Introductory chapters describe geography and project methodology. Adding to the appeal are 68 original pen-and-ink bird portraits commissioned especially for this project.

Download or read book Life Under the Fast Lane written by Daniel Airola and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes results of 20 years of study of the ecology and management of Sacramento's bridge-nesting Purple Martin population. This is the last population of this California Species of Special Concern that remains in the state's Central Valley. Contents include population status, habitat requirements, and evaluation of management actions taken on behalf of the species. Various factors that could be responsible for the dramatic 88% population decline are evaluated in detail. A population model uses information on population size and survival estimates from banding studies to identify the cause of decline as inadequate reproduction, which is tied to the dramatic increase in use of neonicotinoid insecticides in surrounding urban and agricultural lands. The document identifies needed conservation measures and detailed land use planning guidelines for planning, design, environmental analysis, and construction to prevent disturbance of nesting martins and degradation of their habitat by urban development projects. The book also includes a number of accessible and entertaining sidebar explorations on how this long-term research project was conducted, how Western Purple Martins differ from their more abundance eastern counterparts, why martins are nest in colonies, and other topics of general reader interest.

The successor of a classic volume by the same title, Interrelationships of Fishes, provides the latest in the "state of the art" of systematics and classification for many of the major groups of fishes. In providing a sound phylogenetic framework from leading authorities in the field, this book is an indispensable reference for a broad range of biologists, especially students of fish behavior, anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, genetics and ecology--in fact, anyone who wishes to interpret their work on fishes in an evolutionary context. - Provides thorough and comprehensive treatment of the Phylogency of fishes - Assembles an International team of expert contributors - Useful to a wide variety of fish biologists

Book Canopy Arthropods

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nigel E. Stork
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 592 pages

Download or read book Canopy Arthropods written by Nigel E. Stork and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As forests are cut down, altered and fragmented, the communities of organisms associated with them are also affected. Predictions of global species extinction rates based on forest loss range 1% to 10% each decade. Because arthropods comprise the largest component of animal species richness, it is inevitable that many arthropod species will become extinct. Millions of these species are thought to live in the forest canopy. During the last twenty years recognition of the importance of canopy arthropods to global biodiversity and the crucial roles arthropods play in forests has led to a revolution in the study and understanding of the arthropod community structure in the forest canopy. Recent advances have been greatly aided by the development of improved sampling techniques and new methods of access to the forest canopy. Canopy Arthropods brings together for the first time a wide range of the most recent studies of arthropods living in forest canopies and comes from a truly international team of contributors.
