Book excerpt: Did you know that nearly half of the land of Wyoming belongs to the federal government? In fact, there are three national forests, a large amount of grassland, and many other large swaths of "public" land in Wyoming. Its famous national parks are administered by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. The state also contains the Devils Tower National Monument, the first national monument in the United States. The state is also the least populated of the contiguous 48 states. Although it is the 10th largest state by area, it is also the least populated. Unlike Rhode Island, which is 1,212 square miles and home to more than a million people, Wyoming is far less densely populated than its neighbors. But that's not to say Wyoming isn't full of interesting facts. In fact, many of the most fascinating facts about Wyoming are about the state's diverse wildlife. Cheyenne is the capital and largest city of Wyoming, located in the southeastern corner. The state is home to the famous Yellowstone National Park, which is the country's highest peak. At 6063 feet above sea level, Cheyenne is the 2nd highest capital in the US. Only Santa Fe, New Mexico, is higher. The state's original inhabitants were Native American tribes, which are now recognized by the federal government.

Book excerpt: It's 1941 and ten-year-old Norman Mineta is a carefree fourth grader in San Jose, California, who loves baseball, hot dogs, and Cub Scouts. But when Japanese forces attack Pearl Harbor, Norm's world is turned upside down. Corecipient of The Flora Stieglitz Straus Award A Horn Book Best Book of the Year One by one, things that he and his Japanese American family took for granted are taken away. In a matter of months they, along with everyone else of Japanese ancestry living on the West Coast, are forced by the government to move to internment camps, leaving everything they have known behind. At the Heart Mountain internment camp in Wyoming, Norm and his family live in one room in a tar paper barracks with no running water. There are lines for the communal bathroom, lines for the mess hall, and they live behind barbed wire and under the scrutiny of armed guards in watchtowers. Meticulously researched and informed by extensive interviews with Mineta himself, Enemy Child sheds light on a little-known subject of American history. Andrea Warren covers the history of early Asian immigration to the United States and provides historical context on the U.S. government's decision to imprison Japanese Americans alongside a deeply personal account of the sobering effects of that policy. Warren takes readers from sunny California to an isolated wartime prison camp and finally to the halls of Congress to tell the true story of a boy who rose from "enemy child" to a distinguished American statesman. Mineta was the first Asian mayor of a major city (San Jose) and was elected ten times to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he worked tirelessly to pass legislation, including the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. He also served as Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of Transportation. He has had requests by other authors to write his biography, but this is the first time he has said yes because he wanted young readers to know the story of America's internment camps. Enemy Child includes more than ninety photos, many provided by Norm himself, chronicling his family history and his life. Extensive backmatter includes an Afterword, bibliography, research notes, and multimedia recommendations for further information on this important topic. A California Reading Association Eureka! This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Boys in Wyoming Edward Sylvester Ellis "You know we have always agreed that many parents injure their children by undue indulgence." "True, and we have been indulgent to ours, but not improperly so. A great deal depends upon the children themselves. Jack and Fred are obedient, studious, and have good principles. If we should say 'No' to this scheme of theirs they would be disappointed, almost beyond what we can understand, but neither would protest or sulk. They would study just as hard as ever. It is that which appeals to us. If they were sullen and dissatisfied we wouldn't care; but, John, you and I have each been blessed with model sons, and they are entitled to privileges which it would not be safe to grant to other boys. I confess I feel like sending both out to Wyoming for an outing." We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
