Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the complex yet intimate relationship between a present-day national obsession with childhood and a colonial past with which Australia as a nation has not adequately come to terms, Young and Free draws on philosophy, literature, film and testimony. The result is a demonstration of how anxiety about childhood has become a screen for more fundamental and intractable issues that vex Australian social and political life. Joanne Faulkner argues that by interpreting these anxieties in their relation to settler-colonial Australia’s unresolved conflict with Aboriginal people, new ways of conceiving of Australian community may be opened. The book engages with philosophical and literary characterizations of childhood, from Locke and Rousseau, to Freud, Bergson, Benjamin Agamben, Lacan, Rancière and Halbwachs. The author’s psychoanalytic approach is supplemented by an engagement with contemporary political philosophy that informs Faulkner’s critique of the concepts of the subject, sovereignty and knowledge, resulting in a speculative postcolonial model of the subject. Book We Were Young and Carefree

Download or read book We Were Young and Carefree written by Laurent Fignon and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-06-16 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ah, I remember you: you're the guy who lost the Tour de France by eight seconds!' 'No monsieur, I'm the guy who won the Tour twice. The international bestselling autobiography of the legendary French cyclist Laurent Fignon Two-time winner of the Tour de France in the early eighties, Laurent Fignon became the star for a new generation. In the 1989 tour, he lost out to his American arch-rival, Greg LeMond, by an agonising eight seconds. In this revealing account, the former champion spares nobody, not even himself, and pulls back the curtain on what really went on behind the scenes of this epic sport - the friendships, the rivalries, the betrayals, the parties, the girls and, of course, the performance-enhancing drugs. Fignon's story bestrides a golden age in cycling: a time when the headlines spoke of heroes, not doping, and a time when cyclists were afraid of nothing. ‘Sports book of the year: He's ruthlessly honest, about himself and about cycling, and he provides a gripping insight into an unrelenting hard world’ Independent

Book excerpt: 'A country that makes no room for the young is a country that will forfeit a fair future. This must not become Australia.' Today's young Australians are the first generation since the Great Depression to be worse off than their parents. And so, just as we have seen the gap between rich and poor widen over recent decades, we're beginning to see young and old pull apart in ways that will wear at our common bonds. It's time to decide what kind of future we want for this country. Will it be one where young Australians enjoy the same opportunities to build stable, secure lives as their parents and grandparents had? And can we do right by the elderly without making second-class citizens of the young? Urgent and convincing, Generation Less investigates the life prospects of young Australians. It looks at their emotional life, their access to credit, education and fulfilling jobs, and considers whether they will ever be able to buy a house. A wake-up call for young and old alike, Generation Less is a smart, funny and ground-breaking blueprint for a fairer future. 'A passionate and incisive case for rewriting the generational compact.' Book Playing for Both Sides

Download or read book Playing for Both Sides written by Stephanie Johnson and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For novelist Stephanie Johnson, her relationship with Australia and Australians has been an ambivalent one. She has lived there for periods in her life, and her first book, a collection of short stories, was actually published in Australia. She was described then as a young Australian writer, something she says she agreed to ‘for reasons that are complex and some of them hardly honourable’. For Johnson the longing to return has waxed and waned. ‘Why don’t I live there?’ she often asks herself. Yet she is a sixth-generation New Zealander. In this BWB Text Johnson explores her elusive and ambivalent feelings about the sunburnt country – which includes a musician’s road trip there with her singer-songwriter son Skyscraper Stan – and in so doing casts fascinating light on some of the formative influences that have shaped the work of this award-winning New Zealand writer.

Book All That I Am with Thoughts and Dreams

Download or read book All That I Am with Thoughts and Dreams written by Tanya Lynn Walker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In understanding who I am and the journey it took to get me from one point in my life to another, I have written this book of poetry as the link to a creative process of true and honest emotions. I am the force behind my own energy and fate. Through purpose and passion it is with joy and happiness I share my unshakeable truths. My world revolves around interpretations of rhythm and rhyme. While some may view these poems as thought-provoking, they are merely words of beauty and power that surround me in my space and time. The passion and light reflected in this book are responses to inspirations, tragedies, love, and faith, a way that helps me to connect with the modern reader. They are words that I have spoken and thought of in my mind and heart. Poetry is love in any language and because I am in love with life, I have written these love songs to those that have achieved something greater than the power of words. Poetry is wisdom and the humility that comes from wisdom. All the knowledge that I have gained from wisdom comes from heaven. I am but a lonely dreamer.
