Book For the Liberty of Texas Classic Reprint

Download or read book For the Liberty of Texas Classic Reprint written by Edward Stratemeyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For the Liberty of Texas For the Liberty of Texas is a tale complete in itself, but it forms the first of a line of three volumes to be known under the general title of the Mexican War Series. Primarily the struggle of the Texans for freedom did not form a part of our war with Mexico, yet this struggle led up directly to the greater war to follow, and it is probably a fact that, had the people of Texas not at first accomplished their freedom, there would have been no war between the two larger republics. Book The Texan Star the Story of a Great Fight for Liberty Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Texan Star the Story of a Great Fight for Liberty Classic Reprint written by Joseph an Altsheler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texan Star, the Story of a Great Fight for Liberty "The Texan Star," while a complete story in itself, is the first of three, projected by the author, and based upon the Texan struggle for liberty against the power of Mexico. This revolution, epic in its nature, and crowded with heroism and great events, divides itself naturally into three parts. The first phase begins in Mexico with the treacherous imprisonment of Austin, the Texan leader, the rise of Santa Anna and his attempt, through bad faith, to disarm the Texans and leave them powerless before the Indians. It culminates in the rebellion of the Texans, and their capture, in the face of great odds, of San Antonio, the seat of the Mexican power in the north. The second phase is the coming of Santa Anna with an overwhelming force, the fall of the Alamo, the massacre of Goliad and the dark days of Texas. Yet the period of gloom is relieved by the last stand of Crockett, Bowie, and their famous comrades. The third phase is the coming of light in the darkness, Houston's crowning victory at San Jacinto, and the complete victory of the Texans. The story of the Texan fight for freedom has always appealed to the author, as one of the most remarkable of modem times. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Days in Texas and Rains County A history of the early settlement of Texas and Rains County, could it have been written as things happened would be a story full of fascination and interest for the old and young of this, or any other generation that may come, for it would be a story of deeds of heroism, of stern persistence, of deprivation of. The comforts of life, of a struggle that finally resulted in the establishment of homes in the wilder ness of what is now our great State and County. A large majority of the first settlers were descendants of men who had made for our country a history showing that they had a strong sense of justice and of individual liberty, for which they unyieldingly contended, regardless of con sequences. Book Letter to the Hon Henry Clay

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter to the Hon. Henry Clay: On the Annexation of Texas to the United States I trust, that you will excuse the liberty which I take in thus publicly addressing you. If you could look into my heart, I am sure you would not condemn me. You would discover the motives of this act, in my respect for your eminent powers, and in my confidence that you are disposed to use them for the honor and happiness of your country. Were you less distinguished, or less worthy of distinction, I should not trouble you with this letter. I write you, because I am persuaded, that your great influ ence, if exerted in promoting just views on the subject of this communication, would accomplish a good, to which, perhaps, no other man in the country is equal. I am bound in frankness, to add another reason for addressing you. I h0pe that your name, prefixed to this letter, may secure to it an access to some, perhaps to many, who would turn away, were its thoughts presented in a more general form. Perhaps by this aid, it may scale the barrier, which now excludes from the South a certain class of the writings of the North. I am sure your hospitality would welcome me to Kentucky; and your well known generosity, I believe, will consent that I should use your name, to gain a hearing in that and the neighboring states. Book Slavery in Early Texas Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Slavery in Early Texas Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Lester G. Bugbee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery in Early Texas, Vol. 2 So ends the first chapter of the history of this institution in Texas. It was settled beyond controversy, by the constitution of 18 36, that Texas should remain open to slavery. There is little evidence of the existence in Texas of any form of the slave trade during the period covered by this paper. No complaint was made by Almonte of the violation of the law of July 13, 1824, and none was mentioned by Alaman as having been made by Teran. Austin's private papers, so far as I know, reveal but one instance. On the occasion of his settle ment with the heirs of Joseph H. Hawkins, his partner in the first colony, Austin presented a statement to their agent, in which he expressly disclaimed all responsibility for the loss of a vast sum in the negro speculation of which John Botts had the management, and definitely asserted that it had nothing to do with the colony.1 It seems that Botts had brought thirty or forty slaves to Texas in 1822 or 182 3, at least some of whom were the property of Hawkins, and after disposing of them had declined to render an account to the heirs.2 These are the only references that I have seen to any kind of specula tion or trade in negroes prior to 1830. Download or read book Sam Houston and the War of Independence in Texas Classic Reprint written by Alfred M. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sam Houston and the War of Independence in Texas My purpose in writing the life of Sam Houston and a history of the War of Independence in Texas has been to give as accurate a picture as was in my power of a very remarkable and interesting personality, and a period of great importance in the growth and character of the nation. Houston possessed very strong and original qualities as well as very apparent weaknesses and limitations, and his character and conduct often deserved censure as well as discriminating approval. He had many devoted partisans, attracted by his achievements and personal magnetism, as well as bitter enemies, created by his sharp tongue and masterful temperament, and the written records and estimates of him vary from extravagant and often fulsome eulogy to the harshest depreciation and the most envenomed attack. In later years the detraction and animosity are dying away, and he is becoming a somewhat mythical hero, who represents the traditional pride of a community, and embodies the reverence of a heroic history. Book A New History of Texas Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New History of Texas Classic Reprint written by Edward Stiff and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of Texas The great and increasing emigration to Texas, taken in connection with her present position, former history and prospective career, were the primary causes which induced the author to compile a volume, entitled the History of Texas, yet, in doing so, he has embodied other and dissimilar information, as well as such as will safely conduct emigrants to favorable localities, and in a cheap way acquaint them with things necessary to be known - and he has supplied such data as will enable those thinking of a removal, to knowingly decide if it is expedient to seek a home in the new Republic or not. Desiring at all times to pursue the quiet and retired walks of private life, the author of the following work would not have made his travels in Texas the leading subject of a publication, had not her vast and luxuriant plains and other more romantic scenery, first suggested the idea - an idea that has grown in strength every day, since the effect of combined causes, not the least among which may be mentioned the fact of the entire absence of any work on the subject, from which can be extracted such information as comes home to the every day pursuits of men, or one that has been written with that independence of thought, and strict impartiality, which should ever be the aim and end of the Historian who aspires to an enduring and honorable fame, when he shall sleep with his Fathers.
