These effects are especially true for the middle and working class who we most want to break from the cycle of poverty but whose best route is by entering modern day indentured servitude. We must change the way we pay for higher education if the United States is to uphold its promise. This article will detail the pervasive effects of the student loan problem in America and will examine pragmatic solutions such as ending the Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL) program, removing unwarranted bankruptcy protection of student loans, and enacting loan forgiveness programs to reverse the receding economic tides. The effects of these policies would stimulate the economy, create an environment conducive to innovation, and move our society closer to its meritocratic ideals.

This book explains the motivations for pursuing homeownership amongst working-class African Americans despite the structural conditions that make it less economically and socially rewarding for this group. Fervent adherence to the American Dream ideology amongst working-class African Americans makes them more vulnerable to exploitation in a structurally racist housing market. The book draws on qualitative interviews with sixty-eight African American aspiring homebuyers looking to buy a home in the Chicago metropolitan area to investigate the housing-search process and residential relocation decisions in the context of a racially segregated metropolitan region. Working-class African Americans remained committed to homeownership, in part because of the moral status attached to achieving this goal. For African American homebuyers, success at the American Dream of homeownership is directly related to the long-standing dream of equality. For the aspiring homebuyers in this study, delayed homeownership was a practical problem for the same reasons, but they also experienced this as a personal failing, due to the strong cultural expectation in the United States that homeownership is a milestone that middle-class adults must achieve. Furthermore, despite using perfectly reasonable housing search strategies to locate homes in stable or improving racially integrated neighborhoods, the structure of racial segregation limits their agency in housing choices. Ultimately, policy solutions will need to address structural racism broadly and be attuned to the needs of both homeowners and renters.

I'm writing this because I wish someone gave me this advice when I was 16 and I was being shouted at for not going to university. I was told that I'd never be successful. I was told that my life would be so miserable, it wouldn't be worth living. I believe that college died a painful death this century. No longer does a child need a formal education to get ahead in life. College in the United States of America has turned into a horrible scam, enriching a few at the top of the pyramid, while the teachers and students suffer. Do you think the children of the people that own these colleges go to university? The children of people making 10's of millions of dollars per year?It's turned middle class children of the future into debt slaves. Unless these debt slaves somehow find a way to produce an exceptionally high income, they'll never be able to create the levels of upward social mobility seen before in previous generations. Parents know it, kids know it, college has turned into a scam. Unless you want to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, accountant, nurse, or something that needs a degree, you're better off not signing the dotted line on a 6-figure loan. From the statistics you'll see and learn about in this book, even a high income career isn't enough. Not only do I show the problems, I provide solutions. This could be the book that helps you finally sell them on the idea that you don't need to go to college/university to become successful. I was able to become successful without crippling loans. I want the same for you too.
