Book Why Torture Is Wrong and the People Who Love Them

Download or read book Why Torture Is Wrong and the People Who Love Them written by Christopher Durang and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] hilarious and disturbing new comedy about all-American violence” and other whip-smart political satires by the Tony Award-winning playwright (Ben Branley, The New York Times). Christopher Durang, who The New York Observer called “Jonathan Swift’s nicer, younger brother,” became one of America’s most beloved and acclaimed playwrights by marrying gonzo farce with incisive social critique. Now collected in Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them and Other Political Plays are Durang’s most revealing satirical plays. Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them is the story of a young woman in crisis: Is her new husband, whom she married when drunk, a terrorist? Or just crazy? Or both? Is her father’s hobby of butterfly collecting really a cover for his involvement in a shadow government? Does her mother frequent the theater for mental escape, or is she just insane? Add in a minister who directs porno, and a ladylike operative whose underwear just won’t stay up, and this black comedy will make us laugh all the way to the waterboarding room. Also included in this volume are: Excerpts from Sex and Longing Cardinal O’Connor The Book of Leviticus Show Entertaining Mr. Helms The Doctor Will See You Now Under Duress: Words on Fire An Alter Boy Talks to God The Hardy Boys and the Mystery of Where Babies Come From

Book The Torture Letters

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laurence Ralph
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2020-01-15
  • ISBN : 022672980X
  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book The Torture Letters written by Laurence Ralph and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torture is an open secret in Chicago. Nobody in power wants to acknowledge this grim reality, but everyone knows it happens—and that the torturers are the police. Three to five new claims are submitted to the Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission of Illinois each week. Four hundred cases are currently pending investigation. Between 1972 and 1991, at least 125 black suspects were tortured by Chicago police officers working under former Police Commander Jon Burge. As the more recent revelations from the Homan Square “black site” show, that brutal period is far from a historical anomaly. For more than fifty years, police officers who took an oath to protect and serve have instead beaten, electrocuted, suffocated, and raped hundreds—perhaps thousands—of Chicago residents. In The Torture Letters, Laurence Ralph chronicles the history of torture in Chicago, the burgeoning activist movement against police violence, and the American public’s complicity in perpetuating torture at home and abroad. Engaging with a long tradition of epistolary meditations on racism in the United States, from James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time to Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me, Ralph offers in this book a collection of open letters written to protesters, victims, students, and others. Through these moving, questing, enraged letters, Ralph bears witness to police violence that began in Burge’s Area Two and follows the city’s networks of torture to the global War on Terror. From Vietnam to Geneva to Guantanamo Bay—Ralph’s story extends as far as the legacy of American imperialism. Combining insights from fourteen years of research on torture with testimonies of victims of police violence, retired officers, lawyers, and protesters, this is a powerful indictment of police violence and a fierce challenge to all Americans to demand an end to the systems that support it. With compassion and careful skill, Ralph uncovers the tangled connections among law enforcement, the political machine, and the courts in Chicago, amplifying the voices of torture victims who are still with us—and lending a voice to those long deceased.

Book excerpt: When Devon Brentton, Viscount Wilhelm, teasingly threatens to kiss Lady Lydia Covvington to ruin her day, it was meant as a jest. However, the proclaimed Ice Queen of London is in need of some thawing, and he is just the rake to do it. A little kiss is only the beginning; they soon find that their animosity towards each other hid a spark of attraction that bursts into flame. But Lydia is no meek miss. Learning from her mother’s awful experience with a philandering husband, she knows that handsome rakes never reform. She will never wed a man like Devon, but cannot deny herself the chance to experience the heat and desire, and—dare she think it—love, that Devon can show her. She strikes up a bargain he can’t resist; a journey of passion that will end with her marriage to an older—respectable gentleman, who will never break her heart. But Devon can’t let her go. For him, there is only one outcome and it ends with her seduction and her hand in marriage. However, Lydia proves not only rakes can break hearts, and when he thinks he has won her heart at last, she denies him. Devastated, he leaves England so that he will never see her and the man she chose over him again. When at last he is found and brought home against his will, he finds the woman who shattered his heart is there, and determined to mend it. Can he forgive her? Lydia will not give up on him again, but the tables have turned, and it is up to Devon to take a second chance at love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Batman Begins to Tom Clancy, How to Justify Torture shows how contemporary culture creates simplified narratives about good guy torturers and bad guy victims, how dangerous this is politically, and what we can do to challenge it. If there was a bomb hidden somewhere in a major city, and you had the person responsible in your custody, would you torture them to get the information needed to stop the bomb exploding, preventing a devastating terrorist attack and saving thousands of lives? This is the ticking bomb scenario -- a thought experiment designed to demonstrate that torture can be justified. In How to Justify Torture, cultural critic Alex Adams examines the ticking bomb scenario in-depth, looking at the ways it is presented in films, novels, and TV shows -- from Batman Begins and Dirty Harry to French military thrillers and home invasion narratives. By critiquing its argument step by step, this short, provocative book reminds us that, despite what the ticking bomb scenario will have us believe, torture can never be justified.

Download or read book Love Me Hurt Me written by Candy Kross and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sound of metal against cement echoing throughout the basement was an eerie sound, especially when I knew what was causing the noise. As the sound came closer to me, I knew it was her. She walked over to a hanging lamp from the ceiling and switched it on. The brightness in my eyes caused me to have blurry vision and temporary blindness and my eyes had to adjust for a minute or two. When they did, it probably would have been better if my eyes were still blurry. Standing in front of me was the statuesque body of a woman with long black wavy hair, blue eyes, legs that wouldn't quit and breasts that were perched upon top of a leather corset. Her waist was cinched and her hips were round. She had an hourglass figure. She had a whip that was round in a circle on a clasp on her corset that dangled. If I blinked my eyes a little and while they were focusing, she was a reminiscing figure of a childhood hero that I had once admired, Wonder Woman. But, this woman was not here for good. No, she was here to cause pain and torture to me, at any cost. The woman was my wife. Yes, most husbands have a loving wife, but mine was scorned. She wasn't always this way. No, in fact, we once had a loving relationship. She actually cooked me dinner, did my laundry and made love to me when I got home from work. It was a marriage made in heaven, by any standards. That is, until I let my libido get the best of me. I had never planned on sleeping with my secretary. I know, it sounds cliche, but it's the truth. Me and my secretary were at the office late one night working and she came into my office wearing some skimpy little lingerie thing. "You make me an executive in your company, or I tell your wife we are having an affair." She said one morning to me while she was taking notes in my office. The little skank went straight to my wife and told her everything after she quit in the middle of the day. You can imagine what I came home to that night. That was two weeks ago.
