Book excerpt: Excerpt from Footsteps of Proserpine: And Other Verses and Interludes Little the world will heed These wild-flowers of my brain, This wreath of waif and weed, My songs of sun and rain: The loud world little recks Even of song divine; She will not long perplex Her heart with notes of mine. But you my songs approve For my sake and for song's, For praise of perfect love, And fervid hate of wrongs; But most of all, I deem, Because therein you trace, Broken, as in a stream, Some image of my face. Her neck is as a tower, and either breast Like ivory, and the milk within them Love: Who eat her banquet hunger shall not move, Who drink her wine shall know eternal rest." He sang; and, singing, beasts beside the well Slew one who smote him, as the Saint foretold, Saying "A black dog in his teeth shall hold The hand which smites;" and so the thing befell. Whereat they marvelled. And the king, who heard, Cried out "What slave, Abbanes, hast thou brought?" And he, "O king, a builder wisely taught!" Wherefore Gundaphoros mused, and stroked his beard: "' Daughter of Light!'--a goodly song, in sooth! Singing thou buildest! Build as thou dost sing, A builder thou and minstrel for the king: For lo, this day my daughter weds a youth; "And thou shalt sing what time the groomsmen quit The bridal chamber and the bashful bride Steals through the arras to her bridegroom's side: 'Daughter of Light' sing thou, and hearing it Wisdom may seal their nuptials, and her Rose Enwreathe their house porch; yea, and thou in time Shalt build their palace that the tree may climb Walls fit to bear its blossom as it grows." These things the Lord put in his heart to say, And Thomas bowed, and sang, and sang anew Of truth and Christ before those wedded two, And wisdom blossomed in their hearts that day. Ii. Thus spake the king Gundaphoros to his slave: "Forasmuch as I am fain betimes to see Mine heirs housed in a palace sumptuously, Build now, and well, or tarrying build thy grave! Soon I go hence; the month is Dius now, In Xanthicus the bases must be laid."3 Said Didymus, " My lord shall be obeyed: Ere then...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the nineteenth century, the figure of Persephone rapidly evolved from what was essentially a decorative metaphor into a living goddess who embodied the most spiritual aspects of ancient Greek religion. In the first comprehensive survey of the Persephone myth in English and American literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Margot Louis explores the transformation of the goddess to provide not only a basis for understanding how the study of ancient history informed the creation of a new spirituality but for comprehending the deep and bitter tensions surrounding gender that interacted with this process. Beginning with an overview of the most influential ancient texts on Persephone and references to Persephone in Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, and Romantic period writing, Louis shows that the earliest theories of matriarchy and patriarchal marriage emerged in the 1860s alongside the first English poems to explore Persephone's story. As scholars began to focus on the chthonic Mystery cults, and particularly on the Eleusinian Mysteries of Demeter and Persephone, poets and novelists explored the divisions between mother and daughter occasioned by patriarchal marriage. Issues of fertility and ritual resonate in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Willa Cather's My Antonia, while the first advance of a neo-pagan spirituality, as well as early feminist critiques of male mythography and of the Persephone myth, emerge in Modernist poems and fictions from 1908 to 1927. Informed by the latest research and theoretical work on myth, Margot Louis's fascinating study shows the development of Victorian mythography in a new light; offers original takes on Victorian representations of gender and values; exposes how differently male and female Modernists dealt with issues of myth, ritual, and ancient spirituality; and uncovers how deeply the study of ancient spirituality is entwined with controversies about gender.

Book excerpt: 'Rich and witty ... it confirms Helen Oyeyemi as a true original' Ali Smith 'Powerful ... wonderfully unsettling ... Oyeyemi's raw style is great' Time Out 'Beautiful ... this is about the difficulties of knowing who you are, especially if you are born of several incompatible cultures. It has the ring of truth' The Times Maja Carmen Carrera was only five years old when her black Cuban family emigrated from the Caribbean to London, leaving her with one complete memory: a woman singing - in a voice both eerie and enthralling - at their farewell party, while little Maja peered out from beneath a table. Now, almost twenty years later, Maja herself is a singer, in love with Aaron, pregnant and haunted by what she calls 'her Cuba'. Growing up in London, she has struggled to negotiate her history and the sense that speaking the Spanish or the English of her people's conquistadors made her less of a black girl. But she is unable to find in herself the Ewe, Igbo, or Swahili of her roots. It seems all that's left is silence. And on the other side of the reality wall, Yemaya Saramagua, Yemaya of the ocean, lives in the Somewherehouse with two doors: one opening to London, the other to Lagos. Yemaya is troubled by the ease with which her fellow gods have disguised themselves as saints and reappeared under different names and faces... ________________________ The Opposite House is about the disquiet that follows us across places and languages, a feeling passed down from mother and father to son and daughter. It is an unforgettable second novel from the author of The Icarus Girl.
