Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone is talking about food. Chefs are celebrities. "Locavore" and "freegan" have earned spots in the dictionary. Popular books and films about food production and consumption are exposing the unintended consequences of the standard American diet. Questions about the principles and values that ought to guide decisions about dinner have become urgent for moral, ecological, and health-related reasons. In Philosophy Comes to Dinner, twelve philosophers—some leading voices, some inspiring new ones—join the conversation, and consider issues ranging from the sustainability of modern agriculture, to consumer complicity in animal exploitation, to the pros and cons of alternative diets.

Book Classical Indian Philosophy

Download or read book Classical Indian Philosophy written by Peter Adamson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Adamson and Jonardon Ganeri present a lively introduction to one of the world's richest intellectual traditions: the philosophy of classical India. They begin with the earliest extant literature, the Vedas, and the explanatory works that these inspired, known as Upaniṣads. They also discuss other famous texts of classical Vedic culture, especially the Mahābhārata and its most notable section, the Bhagavad-Gīta, alongside the rise of Buddhism and Jainism. In this opening section, Adamson and Ganeri emphasize the way that philosophy was practiced as a form of life in search of liberation from suffering. Next, the pair move on to the explosion of philosophical speculation devoted to foundational texts called 'sutras,' discussing such traditions as the logical and epistemological Nyāya school, the monism of Advaita Vedānta, and the spiritual discipline of Yoga. In the final section of the book, they chart further developments within Buddhism, highlighting Nagārjuna's radical critique of 'non-dependent' concepts and the no-self philosophy of mind found in authors like Dignāga, and within Jainism, focusing especially on its 'standpoint' epistemology. Unlike other introductions that cover the main schools and positions in classical Indian philosophy, Adamson and Ganeri's lively guide also pays attention to philosophical themes such as non-violence, political authority, and the status of women, while considering textual traditions typically left out of overviews of Indian thought, like the Cārvaka school, Tantra, and aesthetic theory as well. Adamson and Ganeri conclude by focusing on the much-debated question of whether Indian philosophy may have influenced ancient Greek philosophy and, from there, evaluate the impact that this area of philosophy had on later Western thought.

Book Footprints

Download or read book Footprints written by Assad Mario Sabga and published by . This book was released on 2003-11-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his "Footprints...A compendium of musings, thoughts, and values." Assad Sabga reveals his thoughts on many different aspects of life. In doing so, his thoughts and views manifest the works of many great scholars and writers who undoubtedly inspired him. During his life he has constantly reviewed and revised his thoughts and personal philosophy if only as a result of personal growth but, more often than not, in response to different experiences he encountered. He took literally to heart the basic statement of Socrates: "The unexamined life is not worth living," and was constantly thinking about life and examining and comparing his own. At fifty three years of age he sought to simplify and consolidate all of the complex thoughts that has disseminated through his mind ever since his college days, and wanting to leave "footprints" so that his children may either follow in his way, or, having chosen their own path they might have the knowledge, guidance and companionship of what he truly believed. He then decided to write a summary of these thoughts and values, more as a compass for his children and their children than for any other reason. On review, he soon found out that as hard as he tried, not one thought of his was original or unique. Wherever he ventured in his thoughts he found that someone had been there before him and he was merely repeating what he had read or learned about somewhere before and more often than not that person had expressed the idea much better than he ever could. He however makes no apologies for that nor does he attempt to take credit for it, but instead, views it as a tribute to these great men who have influenced his life so much.

Download or read book Footprints written by David Farrier and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A profound meditation on climate change and the Anthropocene and an urgent search for the fossils—industrial, chemical, geological—that humans are leaving behind What will the world look like in ten thousand years—or ten million? What kinds of stories will be told about us? In Footprints: In Search of Future Fossils, the award-winning author David Farrier explores the traces we will leave for the very distant future. Modern civilization has created objects and landscapes with the potential to endure through deep time, whether it is plastic polluting the oceans and nuclear waste sealed within the earth or the 30 million miles of roads spanning the planet. Our carbon could linger in the atmosphere for 100,000 years, and the remains of our cities will still exist millions of years from now as a layer in the rock. These future fossils have the potential to reveal much about how we lived in the twenty-first century. Crossing the boundaries of literature, art, and science, Footprints invites us to think about how we will be remembered in the myths and stories of our distant descendants. Traveling from the Baltic Sea to the Great Barrier Reef, and from an ice-core laboratory in Tasmania to Shanghai, one of the world’s biggest cities, Farrier describes a world that is changing rapidly, with consequences beyond the scope of human understanding. As much a message of hope as a warning, Footprints will not only alter how you think about the future; it will change how you see the world today.
