Book excerpt: Deep in the forest, in a decaying hunting lodge, a curious bond flickers into existence . . . A LIFE TINGED BY RUIN BETH CLARKE has earned perhaps the most dubious distinction in England-that of being kidnapped twice in one night. Thirty years old and burdened with new responsibilities, her life is a far cry from the rebellion of her youth. Worse, a greedy land agent has designs on her new fortune. When his attempt to abduct her is waylaid by a band of highwaymen, the thieves' mysterious "Captain" offers Beth a strange salvation-perhaps not only from a cold night, but from a cold past, as well . . . A PAST MARRED BY MUTINY RHYS BOOKER was born to a different name, one that he no longer deserves. Cruel turns of fate have brought him here, to a life outside the law-a life that felt like the only possibility before she came into it. With a robbery gone sideways, he can't simply leave this woman to freeze on the highroads, but with a crew of hungry men depending on him, he can't let her go either . . . Far from the dangers of the forest and reunited under the gaze of those who rejected them, can their passion ever survive?

Following Brian Arthur Brown’s award-winning Three Testaments: Torah, Gospel, Quran, this volume of Four Testaments features essays by esteemed scholars to introduce readers to each tradition and text, as well as commentary on unexpected ways the ancient Zoroastrian tradition might connect Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Hinduism, as well as the Abrahamic faiths. Four Testaments aims to foster deeper religious understanding in our interconnected and contentious world.

Book Reward Systems

Download or read book Reward Systems written by Steve Kerr and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2008-12-04 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's one of the thorniest management problems around: dealing with unmotivated, low-performing employees. It's easy to point the finger of blame at them. But in most companies, it's the reward system, not the workforce, that's causing poor attitudes and performance: many reward systems actually discourage desired behaviors while rewarding the very actions that drive executives crazy. In Reward Systems: Does Yours Deliver? Steve Kerr describes the steps you must take to create an effective reward system: - Clarify what you mean by "performance" -- in ways that help employees understand how they can support what you're trying to accomplish - Devise an effective performance-measurement system that distinguishes between metrics used for control and those used for employees' development - Design a reward system that motivates people to do what you want them to do while also meeting their needs To get the most from employees, you don't need to add headcount, upgrade your IT capabilities, or hire consultants. You do need to develop the right reward system. This book shows you how. From our new Memo to the CEO series -- solutions-focused advice from today's leading practitioners.

Book Consumer Neuroscience

Download or read book Consumer Neuroscience written by Moran Cerf and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to using the tools and techniques of neuroscience to understand how consumers make decisions about purchasing goods and services. Contrary to the assumptions of economists, consumers are not always rational actors who make decisions in their own best interests. The new field of behavioral economics draws on the insights of psychology to study non-rational decision making. The newer field of consumer neuroscience draws on the findings, tools, and techniques of neuroscience to understand how consumers make judgments and decisions. This book is the first comprehensive treatment of consumer neuroscience, suitable for classroom use or as a reference for business and marketing practitioners. After an overview of the field, the text offers the background on the brain and physiological systems necessary for understanding how they work in the context of decision making and reviews the sensory and perceptual mechanisms that govern our perception and experience. Chapters by experts in the field investigate tools for studying the brain, including fMRI, EEG, eye-tracking, and biometrics, and their possible use in marketing. The book examines the relation of attention, memory, and emotion to consumer behavior; cognitive factors in decision making; and the brain's reward system. It describes how consumers develop implicit associations with a brand, perceptions of pricing, and how consumer neuroscience can encourage healthy behaviors. Finally, the book considers ethical issues raised by the application of neuroscience tools to marketing. Book The Bhagavadgita in the Mahabharata

Download or read book The Bhagavadgita in the Mahabharata written by and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other Sanskrit work approaches the Bhagavadgita in the influence it has exerted in the West. Philosophers such as Emerson and the other New England Transcendentalists were deeply affected by its insights, a dozen or more scholars, including Annie Besant and Mahatma Gandhi, have attempted its translation, and thousands of individuals struggling with the problems divided loyalties have found comfort and wisdom in its pages. The Bhagavadgita ("Song of the Lord") tells of the young and virtuous Prince Arjuna who is driven to lead his forces into battle against an opposing army composed of close relatives and others whom he loves. The Lord Krsna, appearing in the poem as Arjuna's friend and charioteer, persuades him that he must do battle, and we see Arjuna changing from revulsion at the thought of killing members of his family to resignation and awareness of duty, to manly acceptance of his role as warrior and defender of his kingdom. The Bhagavadgita is a self-contained episode in the Mahabharata, a vast collection of epics, legends, romances, theology, and metaphysical doctrine that reflects the history and culture of the whole of Hindu civilization. The present edition forms a part of J. A. B. van Buitenen's widely acclaimed translation of this great work. Here English and Sanskrit are printed on facing pages, enabling those with some knowledge of Sanskrit to appreciate van Buitenen's accurate rendering of the intimate, familial tone and directness of the original poem.
