  • Author : Tom R. Tyler
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Why Children Follow Rules written by Tom R. Tyler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legal socialization is the process by which children and adolescents acquire their law related values, attitudes, and reasoning capacities. Such values and attitudes, in particular legitimacy, underlie the ability and willingness to consent to laws and defer to legal authorities that make legitimacy based legal systems possible. By age eighteen a person's orientation toward law is largely established, yet legal scholarship has largely ignored this process in favor of studying adults and their relationship to the law. Why Children Follow Rules focuses upon legal socialization outlining what is known about the process across three related, but distinct, contexts: the family, the school, and the juvenile justice system. Throughout, Tom Tyler and Rick Trinkner emphasize the degree to which individuals develop their orientations toward law and legal authority upon values connected to responsibility and obligation as opposed to fear of punishment. They argue that authorities can act in ways that internalize legal values and promote supportive attitudes. In particular, consensual legal authority is linked to three issues: how authorities make decisions, how they treat people, and whether they recognize the boundaries of their authority. When individuals experience authority that is fair, respectful, and aware of the limits of power, they are more likely to consent and follow directives. Despite clear evidence showing the benefits of consensual authority, strong pressures and popular support for the exercise of authority based on dominance and force persist in America's families, schools, and within the juvenile justice system. As the currently low levels of public trust and confidence in the police, the courts, and the law undermine the effectiveness of our legal system, Tom Tyler and Rick Trinkner point to alternative way to foster the popular legitimacy of the law in an era of mistrust.

Book Listen to Your Parent s Rules

Download or read book Listen to Your Parent s Rules written by Ian Bond and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live a life of rules, whether we are aware of it or not. Many of us focus on rules that are not enjoyable because they don't bring immediate satisfaction. But rarely are things that bring immediate satisfaction good for us in the long run. The right rules to accept, that delay immediate gratification, and make us look towards improving our life and routines are ultimately going to give us the confidence and endurance to tackle the right challenges we want to face in life. This story touches upon the belief that we do not want to sit and watch tv all day. OUR LIFE needs to have more meaning than the easiest path downhill. We want to try and fail, to eventually, continually, try again. This story is for people of all generations, to break the rules that don't matter and abide by the rules that do. This story aims to illustrate how rules can be beneficial for a meaningful, enjoyable life. I hope that you are either a child, drinking a glass of milk, or over 21, drinking a glass of Chardonnay, as you read the story of Adam and his trustful friend Socky. Enjoy!

Book excerpt: Why do we follow rules and organised systems so blindly and so willingly? Why do so many of us draw our sense of worth from the opinions of others rather than from ourselves? Why do we ignore the most important resource we will ever have: our intuition? Through a series of eight questions, Maberly invites us to consider these points and in particular to embrace our intuition. His chapter on leadership is both fascinating and persuasive and encourages us to recognise the wisdom and effectiveness of servant-leadership, as indeed did Nelson Mandela. His interview with UK multi-millionaire Scott Russell offers some excellent lessons on how embracing our intuition is integral to maintaining success. Scott's growth over the last few challenging financial years has now become legendary. It's time to reflect, and to reconnect with the one person who can make it all happen - you.
