Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written in answer to the complaint that there are not enough good plays for Youth Theater to produce. Youth Theater is a worthwhile activity for young people to indulge in after class or after school, preempting or preventing involvement in harmful activities otherwise. Fairy Gifts (Tales of Enchantment) is a set of 5 plays written in response to that need. Like most plays designed for Youth Theater, the cast of each play could be all children/young people, a mixture of adults and children, or all adults performing for children. The plays are based on unfamiliar fairytales and folktales from around the world, to wit: "Fairy Gifts" from the French fairy tale by Count de Caylus; "The Enchanted Deer" based on the German fairy tale "Little Brother and Little Sister" by the Brothers Grimm; "Gems in the Night" adapted from the Punjabi tale "Grasp All, Lose All," retold by Major Campbell, Feroshepore; "The Golden-Headed Fish" adapted from an Armenian tale retold by Frederic Macler, Paris; and "The House in the Forest" adapted from the German tale, "The House in the Woods" retold by the Brothers Grimm and other tale-tellers. Three of these plays -- "Fairy Gifts," "The Enchanted Deer," and "The House in the Forest" -- can also be produced as musicals. The music and songs for these have been composed by the author herself and are available separately. To produce any of these plays, send a letter of "Intent to Perform" to the author at this address: Ruby L. Agnir, 6119 Weatherwood Circle, Wesley Chapel, FL 33545.

He has also worked professionally in both storytelling and reader's theater, as a performer, director, and teacher trainer. Aaron's lively and meticulous retellings of folktales and other traditional literature have found homes with more than a dozen children's book publishers, large and small, and with the world's top children's literary magazines, winning him honors from the American Library Association, the New York Public Library, the Bank Street College of Education, the National Council for the Social Studies, and the American Folklore Society. His extensive Web site, visited by thousands of teachers and librarians each week, is known internationally as a prime resource for folktales, storytelling, and reader's theater, while his stories and scripts have been featured in textbooks from publishers worldwide, including Scholastic, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, SRA, The College Board, Pearson Education, National Geographic, Oxford University Press, Barron's, Hodder Education, and McGraw-Hill. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// "Aaron Shepard is a national treasure. He has given thousands of us busy teachers and librarians a gold mine of ready-made plays our students clamor to perform over and over. Aaron's new collection never fails to delight and enthrall. While the experts argue about the 'right' way to teach reading, Aaron is in the middle of the action, inspiring our kids to read aloud with fluency, comprehension, expression, and best of all, joy." -- Judy Freeman, Author, "More Books Kids Will Sit Still For" "Aaron Shepard has done it! Folktales on Stage is a complete package of easy-to-perform, dynamic reader's theater scripts. Pack your passport and take a trip around the world. You and your actors will have a world of fun." -- Dr. Caroline Feller Bauer, Author, "Presenting Reader's Theater" and "New Handbook for Storytellers" "What a gift for the classroom teacher! Pure reading pleasure and not a single script that can't be used with small groups or an entire class. Performance reading builds fluency, but Aaron Shepard's gift for storytelling will also build appreciation. This collection will be a rich addition to reading programs in our balanced literacy classrooms." -- Susan Finney, Author, "Independent Reading Activities That Keep Kids Learning While You Teach Small Groups"

Book Fairy Tales and International Relations

Download or read book Fairy Tales and International Relations written by Kathryn Starnes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical engagement with contemporary IR textbooks via a novel folklorist approach. Two parts of the folklorist approach are developed, addressing story structures via resemblances to two fairy tales, and engaging with the role of authors via framing gestures. The book not only looks at how the idea of ‘social science’ may persist in textbooks as many assumptions about what it means to study IR, but also at how these assumptions are written into the defining stories textbooks tell and the possibilities for (re)negotiating these stories and the boundaries of the discipline. This book will specifically engage with how the stories in textbooks constrain how it is possible to define IR through its (re)production as a social science discipline. In the first part, story structures are explored via Donkeyskin and Bluebeard stories which the book argues resemble some structures in textbooks that define how it is permissible to tell stories about IR. In the second part the role of authors is explored via their framing gestures within a text, drawing on a number of fairy tales. By approaching the stories in textbooks alongside fairy tales, Starnes reflects back onto IR the disciplining practices in the stories textbooks tell by rendering them unfamiliar. Aiming to spark a critical conversation about the role of textbooks in defining the boundaries of what counts as IR and by extension the boundaries of the IR canon, this book is of great interest to students and scholars of international relations.
