Book Folk tales of the Wambo

Download or read book Folk tales of the Wambo written by Johannes Jurgens Viljoen and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology of 17 Wambo folk-tales in the original Ndonga or Kwanyama texts and translated into both English and Afrikaans, these tales have been passed on from generation to generation and are still told to Wambo children, especially at night around the fire.

Book The Zebra s Stripes and other African Animal Tales

Download or read book The Zebra s Stripes and other African Animal Tales written by Dianne Stewart and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2004-11-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folktales can be described as fictional prose narratives that are not confined to any particular culture. A folktale may appear in a slightly different form in a culture that is geographically nearby, or it may appear in a culture that is quite far removed from its original source. In The Zebra’s Stripes and other African Tales, Dianne Stewart has retold a collection of folk tales that have their origins all over Africa. Aimed at children and adults, these tales include legends such as ‘How Lion and Warthog became Enemies’ from the Lamba people of Togo, ‘How Giraffe Acquired his Long Neck’ from East Africa, ‘Why Hippopotamus Lives in the Water’ from Nigeria and ‘Monkey The Musician’ from South Africa. There are tales from the San, Zulu, Zambia, Congo and West Africa, et al. Each section is devoted to a type of animal, and concludes with some facts about the animal in question, adding educational to the stories. Proverbs from various cultures provide additional insight. Throughout, Kathy Pienaar’s beautiful illustrations show great attention to detail.

Download or read book YORUBA LEGENDS written by Various and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yoruba people are descendants from a variety of West African communities. They are united by Geography, History, Religion and most importantly their Language. The 31 legends and tales in this volume belong to the Yoruba people. They relate the adventures of men and animals, and try to explain the mysteries of Nature - Why Women have Long Hair, How the Leopard got his Spots, the Three Magicians, the Boa- Constrictor, How the Elephant got his Trunk and more. There are 9 extra tales about the adventures of the rascally and mischievous tortoise. These stories grew from the imagination of the people. We read these folk-tales for their quaintness and humour, for their sympathy with Nature, and because we find in them the ideas and ideals, not just of one man, but of a race of people. Many years ago, before the advent of the West African slave trade, the Yoruba people inhabited an area which stretched, along the coast of West Africa, all the way inward and down to Angola in South West Africa. Today this is not the case. In modern times we have begun paying close attention to folklore - old tales, not invented by one man, but belonging to the whole people; not written down, but told by parents to their children, and so handed on for hundreds of years. The legends express primitive notions of right and wrong. As a rule, the wicked are punished and the good rewarded; and that, we feel, is as it should be. We may weep at the death of rascally Tortoise, but we may also feel that he somehow has deserved his fate! A percentage of the net sale from this book will be donated to Edgbarrow School in Crowthorne, Berkshire to augment fundraising for their Ghana Project.

  • Author : Chisiya
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2012-04-26
  • ISBN : 1469171767

Download or read book Afrikan Lullaby written by Chisiya and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains African folktales, quizzes and proverbs as traditionally told (by the Ndau people), typically by a grandmother, to children in the evenings. These folktales are passed through this oral tradition from generation to generation and form a critical cultural upbringing that shapes the morals, value systems and way of life of the African societies. The stories told to children from an early age each has a moral teaching or is built around some ancient African ‘words of wisdom’. Whilst Chisiya was studying in England (1979 to 1985), and also starting a family he wrote the folktales initially for his children, but the stories got popular with friends, culminating in the Sheffield Education department (through Chris Searle – their multi-cultural adviser) asking Chisiya to tell some of his grandmothers’ folktales to schools in 1985. Chisiya was hosted by Ellesmere and Pye Bank First schools in Sheffield, where the children would make illustrations about the stories. Now these original children’s drawings have been used in this book. Afrikan Lullaby was first published in 1986 by Karia Press; and this is now its second publication.
