Book LAOS FOLKLORE Folk Fairy and Moral Tales from Ancient Siam

Download or read book LAOS FOLKLORE Folk Fairy and Moral Tales from Ancient Siam written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 48 Folk-Tales in this book hail from the South East Asian land-locked country of Laos. Herein are stories like The Enchanted Mountain, The Spirit-Guarded Cave, The Monkeys and the Crabs, The Origin of Lightning (a tale which seems to be endemic amongst all the world’s cultures,) The Faithful Husband, The Cheating Priest and many more children’s stories which cover Romance and Tragedy, Temples and Priests, Moderation and Greed, Parables and Proverbs and The Wonders of Wisdom. There is also a small collection of Stories which went Astray. When these were first gathered by Katherine Neville Fleeson, the country was a part of the kingdom of Siam, and are uniquely South East Asian in their charm and complete novelty. Until the translator of this volume collected these stories, they were even unwritten, with a single exception which was found in an ancient Laos manuscript. They are, and have been, orally preserved in the provinces which constitute the Laos country, just as they have been handed down from generation to generation, with slight variations in words or incidents. In older times, village elders would tell the stories at their merrymakings around the camp-fires and within their primitive houses, to amuse and instruct the youth and children. However, with the advent of the electronic age, this tradition is being lost, and the more the pity for it. To the Scholar, who is a student of the world's Folk-Lore, you may be assured that you have here a small window in history with the tales of Laos, unobscured, just as they were told when this volume was published in 1899.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In captivating text and illustrations, this beautiful multicultural children's book presents a collection of cherished fables, myths, legends and fairy tales from Thailand that have been passed down through generations of Thai families. The nine charming stories in this book feature clever princesses, warring gods and goddesses, foolish kings, and wily tigers, against a backdrop of traditional Thai village life. They deal with the universal values that parents everywhere want to teach their children, such as good versus evil, right versus wrong, and wisdom versus foolishness. Stories include "How The Thais Learned to Be Calm," when a small village argument escalates into a terrible war; "Princess Golden Flower and the Vulture King," in which a brave princess saves herself from an evil king; and "The Gold Harvest" in which a wise father-in-law tricks his lazy son-in-law into working hard for his family. Curated and narrated by Marion D. Toth and illustrated by Thai artist Patcharee Meesukhon, this collection will provide children with an insight into the traditional Thai culture, and the values and lifestyle of its people. This book will be enjoyed by children ages six to ten, as well as by their parents. Other Thai stories in this book include: How the Bay of Bangkok Came to Be Why Do We Have Thunder and Lightning? The Wisest Man in Siam There is No Such Thing As a Secret How the Tiger Got its Stripes The Footprint of the Buddha

Book STORIES FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS 6 lavishly illustrated children s tales

Download or read book STORIES FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS 6 lavishly illustrated children s tales written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Laurence Housman, retells 6 of the most popular tales from 1001 Arabian Nights. While there are only 6 tales in this volume, they are brought to life with 50 lavishly illustrated images by the famous illustrator Edmund Dulac. The six tales are: The Fisherman And The Genie The Story Of The King Of The Ebony Isles Ali Baba And The Forty Thieves The Story Of The Magic Horse The Story Of The Wicked Half-Brothers The Story Of The Princess Of Deryabar All these tales are narrated by Scheherazadè, the heroine of the Thousand and one Nights. She ranks among the great story-tellers of the world and gives a distinctly Arabian flavour and feel to the stories. In all these tales something magical and wonderful occurs. Sometimes it is a talking donkey, an evil witch or a corrupt Vizier. Whenever evil raises its head, a hero sallies forth to save the day. As per usual evil is vanquished and the hero and his princess ride off into the sunset. While the plot is always the familiar, the characters and the setting are not making the stories all the more interesting and captivating for young minds. NOTE: The Princess of Deryabar featured in “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958). The role was played by Kathryn Grant while Sinbad was played by Kerwin Matthews. It is believed that this volume and other illustrations by Dulac were directly responsible for the making of the film.
