Book excerpt: There are artists out there able to lift the spirits of the downtrodden, who point towards a better world with all they are. Sometimes, they do this in DIY punk style: raw, unplugged, and deeply human. Patrick Schneeweis, better known as Pat the Bunny, is an artist who chose the road less travelled, instinctively deeming it more honest and less controlling. Freer. He grew up in Vermont, where he found people liked his voice and the controversial topics he tackled, and by 16 years old, he had released his first album 'Fire Hazard'. Pat had the courage to test his reality, and then nakedly vocalise it (in both the metaphorical and literal senses). His lyrics saw conflicting ideologies meet and fight to the death, in outlooks that were as captivating as his personal anecdotes were relatable. Pat's journey offers direction to the lost, if only in the promise that so is he; and for all his youthful anarchism and burn-it-to-the-ground spiritedness, his commentary of the world is ironically sobering. Pat's music career only spanned thirteen years, from 2003-2016. He reincarnated several times in different bands of his own making, and split albums with other folk-punk artists equally hungry to change the world. He fought like hell for a vision of peace, and made the battlegrounds his own state of consciousness. Like a flashfire burning everything in its wake, towards the end of his career, Pat's had simmered down, but shoots of new life had sprung up from the ashes, a new direction in which his life could take. This book paints the picture of Pat's fallings and risings, a final cadence before he left the punk scene behind him for good.

This book traces a fractured trajectory that includes Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, Bob Dylan, psych-folk of the sixties (from Vashti Bunyan to John Fahey), lo-fi and outsider recordings (from Captain Beefheart and The Residents to Jandek, Daniel Johnston and Smog), and recent experimental folk (Animal Collective, Six Organs of Admittance, Charalambides) to contextualise the first substantial consideration of new folk. In the process, Encarnacao reviews the literature on folk and punk to argue that tropes of authenticity, though constructions, carry considerable power in the creation and reception of recorded works. New approaches to music require new analytical tools, and through the analysis of some 50 albums, Encarnacao introduces the categories of labyrinth, immersive and montage forms. This book makes a compelling argument for a reconsideration of popular music history that highlights the eternal compulsion for spontaneous, imperfect and performative recorded artefacts.

This study illustrates the confrontational aesthetic of punk and neo-tribalism, the most shocking form of art. Like members of previous counter groups, denizens of the punk subculture have created a coherent and elaborate system of adornment calculated to horrify the general public. Their aesthetic of shock and negation expresses nihilism, apocalypse, and a profound cultural pessimism. These philosophies are revealed not only through adornment but also through music, art, dance, "fanzines," and dramatizations of violence and other antisocial behavior. Their symbolic inversions, ritual pollutions, and carnivalesque antics violate conventions of daily life. Their anti-commercial, do-it-yourself ethos, with its emphasis on parody and gender confusion and its interest in the exotic and the forbidden, further challenges dominant cultural values and ideologies. As mainstream society and the fashion industry incorporate such countercultural styles, the vanguard in shock aesthetics permutates into new forms of outrage. Here, along with a survey of distinctive styles that have been influenced by punk ethos and aesthetic, is a focus on one new-tribalist, Perry Farrell, who has utilized forms of adornment inspired by non-Western body art and modification (tattooing, piercing, scarification). This informally-taught artist and musician, who once lived in the streets of Los Angeles, founded the band Jane's Addiction and created the Lollapalooza tour. Understanding this key figure in the alternative culture illuminates the subversive and transformative appeal that body art has for American youth.

To what extent does the global music market offer opportunities for the worldwide dissemination of local music within and beyond the major industry? The essays in this volume examine the structure and strategies of the transnational music industry, with its deployment of mass communication technologies including sound carriers, satellite broadcasting and the Internet. The book also explores local and individual experience of global music and this music's dissemination through migration and communities of interest, as well as the ideological and political use of different kinds of music. In contrast to recent arguments which posit an American imperialist dominance of popular music, the contributors to this volume find that the global repertoire of the major labels no longer represents the culture of a certain country but is fed by different sources. The essays here discuss how we can characterize this vast de-centered industry, and offer perspectives on the so-called 'international repertoire' that calls for a melodic structure, ballad forms, unaccented vocalisation and an image that has global recognition.
