Book Reduced Visibility Due to Fog on the Highway

Download or read book Reduced Visibility Due to Fog on the Highway written by Frank D. Shepard and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1996 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to traffic and safety engineers; highway and bridge designers; police, fire, and emergency personnel; toll authorities; and other officials concerned with roadway safety operations. It describes the forecasting and detection of fog, as well as countermeasures that are used by state and local transportation agencies to dissipate fog and to warn motorists during reduced visibility conditions. The presence of fog has often resulted in serious collisions due to reduced visibility. This publication of the Transportation Research Board presents a generalized background on the causes of fog, fog forecasting and detection methods, and how fog affects the roadway and the driver. The various countermeasures practiced by transportation agencies that are described herein range from techniques to dissipate fog to a variety of warning systems to alert drivers to adverse conditions. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has held hearings and made recommendations for fog countermeasures, which are described in this synthesis.

Book The Air Quality and Noise Impact of a Warm Fog Dispersal System Using Momentum Driven Heat Sources

Download or read book The Air Quality and Noise Impact of a Warm Fog Dispersal System Using Momentum Driven Heat Sources written by Bruce A. Kunkel and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of a Warm Fog Dispersal System (WFDS) on the air quality and noise level is assessed. The WFDS, designed by AFGL, uses various combinations of heat and thrust to disperse the fog over the runway and approach zones. Emission and noise levels that are within the state-of-the-art are used in this assessment. Calculations show that within the cleared area the pollution concentrations, on the average, are within the EPA standards. (Author).

Book Laboratory Studies of Cold Fog Dispersal by Compressed Air

Download or read book Laboratory Studies of Cold Fog Dispersal by Compressed Air written by Thomas E. Lukow and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two compressed air systems for glaciating supercooled clouds were studied in the laboratory. The first system used the sudden expansion of compressed air. The second system used a continuous flow of air through nozzles of various designs, of which the supersonic nozzle was found to be the most efficient. The data were obtained at an ambient temperature of -4C, but data for other temperatures and pressures were obtained and are presented in the text.

Book Meteorological Observations and Instrumentation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objects of the American Meteorological Society are "the development and dissemination of knowledge of meteorology in all its phases and applications, and the advancement of its professional ideals." The organization of the Society took place in affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science at Saint Louis, Missouri, December 29, 1919, and its incorporation, at Washington, D. C., January 21, 1920. The work of the Society is carried on by the Bulletin, the Journal, and Meteorological Monographs, by papers and discussions at meetings of the Society, through the offices of the Secretary and the Executive Secretary, and by correspondence. All of the Americas are represented in the membership of the Society as well as many foreign countries.

Book Fog Modification

Download or read book Fog Modification written by Bernard A. Silverman and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is a comprehensive review of fog modification. It includes discussions of the physical structure and climatological characteristics of various types of fog. The three different methods of fog modification, that is, removal, evaporation and prevention are discussed, as are the general requirements of fog dispersal. In depth descriptions are given of the techniques used to modify supercooled, warm, and ice fog. (Author).
