Book Becoming Unbecoming

Download or read book Becoming Unbecoming written by Una and published by arsenal pulp press. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary graphic novel is a powerful denunciation of sexual violence against women. As seen through the eyes of a twelve-year-old girl named Una, it takes place in northern England in 1977, as the Yorkshire Ripper, a serial killer of prostitutes, is on the loose and creating panic among the townspeople. As the police struggle in their clumsy attempts to find the killer, and the headlines in the local paper become more urgent, a once self-confident Una teaches herself to "lower her gaze" in order to deflect attention from boys. After she is "slut-shamed" at school for having birth control pills, Una herself is the subject of violent acts for which she comes to blame herself. But as the police finally catch up and identify the killer, Una grapples with the patterns of behavior that led her to believe she was to blame. Becoming Unbecoming combines various styles, press clippings, photo-based illustrations, and splashes of color to convey Una's sense of confusion and rage, as well as sobering statistics on sexual violence against women. The book is a no-holds-barred indictment of sexual violence against women and the shame and blame of its victims that also celebrates the empowerment of those able to gain control over their selves and their bodies. Una (a pseudonym) is an artist, academic, and comics creator. Becoming Unbecoming, which took seven years to create, is her first book. She lives in the United Kingdom.

  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2010-03-16
  • ISBN : 9780215544698
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book The work of Yorkshire Forward written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-03-16 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the work of Yorkshire Forward, its use of resources (forecast to be around £360 million in 2009-10) and how the regional strategies it has developed benefit the region's population of over 5 million, especially in the current economic climate. Yorkshire Forward has led the development of three Regional Economic Strategies (RESs). Although developed by Yorkshire Forward it is felt that it is important that the RES is owned by the region and Yorkshire Forward is commended for its consultative and collaborative approach. It is important that full account is taken of the region's diversity and it will need to be ensured that this is reflected in the new Integrated Regional Strategy, but this should not mean that sub-regional concerns are put ahead of a balanced approach to the interests of the region as a whole and should not detract from Yorkshire Forward's original core economic focus. The Committee is also concerned about the impact of budget cuts and a reduction in funding on the work of Yorkshire Forward and they recommend that Yorkshire Forward's budget not be decreased further

Download or read book Focus on England and Wales written by Wolfgang Viereck and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a wide-ranging study in dialectology. General surveys appear along with in-depth studies of particular problems. Some papers describe the present situation in terms of dynamic synchrony, others deal with the past and making use of present-day dialectal data to help solve certain problems and, finally, those that draw on the past to explain the present. Traditional dialectological methodology is presented here, as is modern quantificational and computative dialectology. Moreover, regional English and Welsh English are investigated on the phonological, morphological and syntactical levels.

Book On the Trail of the Yorkshire Ripper

Download or read book On the Trail of the Yorkshire Ripper written by Richard Charles Cobb and published by Pen and Sword True Crime. This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An outstanding analysis of Peter Sutcliffe, his crimes, his victims and the reasons for the failure of the police investigation.” —North Yorks Enquirer Peter Sutcliffe, The Yorkshire Ripper, remains the most infamous serial killer in British criminal history. His reign of terror saw 13 women brutally murdered and the largest criminal manhunt in British history. Just like Jack the Ripper, his Victorian counterpart of 1888, he remains a killer of almost mythical proportions, yet the locations and circumstances surrounding his foul deeds remain a subject of confusion to this day . . . until now. Using ground breaking new research together with the original police reports, newspaper descriptions and eye witness testimony, we can finally present the truth about what actually happened. For the first time in over four decades we re-examine the crime scenes and deliver the real story of the Yorkshire Ripper murders. “An extremely detailed, very comprehensive, and at just over 200 pages, not daunting to read, next important addition to any student of true crime’s library.” —The True Crime Enthusiast

Book Post offices securing their future

Download or read book Post offices securing their future written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Business and Enterprise Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-07-07 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post office network has been reduced to 12,000 post offices and outreach services, though the Government has set access criteria for the network to ensure that it covers the whole country. This report examines what services could be provided by the network to ensure its future viability and what people want from their post office network. There is no shortage of demand for more services. The network can and should provide: mail services; financial services (especially enhanced banking services); local authority services; central government services; and broader community services. Many of the problems facing the network are a consequence of the Government moving services online, and so reducing Post Office Ltd's income. The Committee believes the Government has seriously underestimated the potential of the network to serve as a link between government and its citizens. The Digital Britain report (Cm. 7650, ISBN 9780101765022) sees the internet as the primary means of access to public services. The Committee support e-delivery of public services but however much the Government may want to encourage digital inclusion, it also needs to prevent social exclusion. 40 per cent of households do not have internet access. Although some departments are seizing the opportunity a truly national network offers to allow easy access to their services, many government departments are woefully unimaginative about the needs of their customers, and show too little respect for members of the public's right to choose how to deal with the Government.
