Book Focus on Canada

Download or read book Focus on Canada written by Sandra Clarke and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1993-11-04 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although varieties of North American English have come in for a good deal of linguistic scrutiny in recent years, the vast majority of published works have dealt with American rather than Canadian English. This volume constitutes a welcome addition to our linguistic knowledge of English-speaking Canada. While the focus of the volume is primarily synchronic, several of the dozen papers it contains offer a diachronic perspective on Canadian English. Topics range from general issues in Canadian lexicography and orthography to sociolinguistic studies of varieties of English spoken in all major geographical areas of the country: Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Quebec and the West. A theme common to many of the articles is the relationship of Canadian English to American varieties to the south.

Book excerpt: Canada explores the history, culture, and people of this huge, sprawling North American nation. As the second-largest country in the world in area, after Russia, Canada is a land of amazing natural beauty. From the majestic Rocky Mountains to the frozen but stunning Arctic landscapes of the Northwest Territories to the seaside charm of the Maritime Provinces, Canadians are rightly pleased with their nation's incredible variety and grandeur. Most Canadians live in cities, many of them, such as Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa, models of urban sophistication and old-world charm. Book Canada U S Relations in Focus

Download or read book Canada U S Relations in Focus written by Carl Ek and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada-United States relations covers more than two centuries, marked by a shared British colonial heritage, conflict during the early years of the U.S., and the eventual development of one of the most successful international relationships in the modern world. The most serious breach in the relationship was the War of 1812, which saw both sides try to invade the other, and both failed, leaving the status quo. Friendship was solidified in the 20th century with the shared experience of the world wars and a close alliance during the Cold War. Canada and the United States are currently the world's largest trading partners, share the world's longest border, and have significant interoperability within the defense sphere. Modern difficulties have included repeated trade disputes (despite a continental trade agreement), environmental concerns, and debates over immigration and the movement of people across the shared border. While the foreign policies of the neighbors have been largely aligned for much of the post-war era, significant disputes have arisen, including over the Vietnam War, the status of Cuba, the Iraq War and the War on Terror. At this time, the Canadian dollar has gained considerably versus the U.S. dollar with as yet unknown consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men Out of Focus charts conversations and polemics about masculinity in Soviet cinema and popular media during the liberal period – often described as "The Thaw" – between the death of Stalin in 1953 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The book shows how the filmmakers of the long 1960s built stories around male protagonists who felt disoriented by a world that was becoming increasingly suburbanized, rebellious, consumerist, household-oriented, and scientifically complex. The dramatic tension of 1960s cinema revolved around the male protagonists’ inability to navigate the challenges of postwar life. Selling over three billion tickets annually, the Soviet film industry became a fault line of postwar cultural contestation. By examining both the discussions surrounding the period’s most controversial movies as well as the cultural context in which these debates happened, the book captures the official and popular reactions to the dizzying transformations of Soviet society after Stalin.

Book Federalism in Canada

Download or read book Federalism in Canada written by Thomas O. Hueglin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Federalism in Canada tells the turbulent story of shared sovereignty and divided governance from Confederation to the present time. It does so with three main objectives in mind. The first objective is to convince readers that federalism is the primary animating force in Canadian politics, and that it is therefore worth engaging with its complex nature and dynamic. The second objective is to bring into closer focus the contested concepts about the meaning and operation of federalism that all along have been at the root of the divide between English Canada and Quebec in particular. The third objective is to give recognition to the trajectory of Canada's Indigenous peoples in the context of Canadian federalism, from years of abusive neglect to belated efforts of inclusion. The book focuses on the constitution with its ambiguous allocation of divided powers, the pivotal role of the courts in balancing these powers, and the political leaders whose interactions oscillate between intergovernmental conflict and cooperation. This focus on executive leadership and judicial supervision is framed by considerations of Canada's regionalized political economy and cultural diversity, giving students an interesting and nuanced view of federalism in Canada."--
