Book excerpt: Following the publication of the widely acclaimed novel Seven Years comes a trove of stories from the Swiss master Peter Stamm. They all possess the traits that have built Stamm’s reputation: the directness of the prose, the deceptive surface simplicity of the narratives, and deep psychological insight into the existential dilemmas of contemporary life. Stamm does not waste a word, nor does he spare the reader’s feelings. These stories are a superb introduction to his work and a gift for all those who have come to regard his fiction as a precise rendering of the contemporary human psyche.

In her debut collection, Mortenson offers short poems that lyrically and sometimes humorously share unsolicited advice; uncomfortable observations; reflections on health, sweetness, and light; unpopular opinions; and random thoughts that touch on not just her life, but also her family and the outside world. While leading others on a journey inward, Mortenson encourages all of us to take a few moments to examine our own paths through life filled with joys, sorrows, and unique experiences that help us decide who we are and what we project into the world on a daily basis. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered just how those steely-eyed stalwart Naval Aviators got to be like that? Do you think they were all born that way? As a matter of fact most of them were just like the kid who grew up next door. This story is about a typical bumbling kid who had to overcome what would seem to be insurmountable obstacles in order to become one of the Navy's elite aviators. It's a tale of how an overweight, out of shape, naive young man with a definite goal for the first time in his life managed to beat the odds in order to fly the Navy's planes. It's a tale of the evolution of a young man from a carefree, non-thinking kid to one of the Navy's more accomplished aviators. The story will take you from the young man's first ideas about flying all the way through to the Navy's School of Preflight where the Marine Gunnery Sergeants who are tasked to do so try to whip young minds and bodies into shape. It will continue on to flight training culminating into the three separate squadrons that Ed Kruger served in. Throughout the story the reader is treated to an irreverent, humorous point of view as it relates to the aspiring young pilot who strives to become the polished aviator of his dreams. It's a novel about real people who make real mistakes and errors of judgment, about people who evolve to something better, about solving problems that seem unsolvable, about laughter, tears and the sweat of real life. It's about the urge to excel, to be better tomorrow than you were today. Ed Kruger is a pilot who reacts to things. He is not proactive. He makes mistakes, gets into trouble, weathers adversity and always comes out swinging. Above all, he is human. He's the kid next door and he's a success story. Although this is a novel and is classified as fiction it is taken from the real life experiences of the author. Everything in this book actually happened within the time period encompassed in the book. The reader will not only be treated to a very realistic view of Navy pilots who flew in the 1960-1970 era but will enjoy the humor that runs throughout the story. The book will not only amuse and enlighten readers and will give them hours of enjoyment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Royal Navy helicopter pilot’s firsthand account of British Special Forces operations in the Falklands Islands and a failed raid on mainland Argentina. In 1982, Argentina’s invasion of the Falkland Islands initiated an undeclared war with the United Kingdom. During the ten-week conflict, Colonel Richard Hutchings served as a commando helicopter pilot with 846 Naval Air Squadron flying Sea King helicopters. Though the sensitive nature of his experiences prevented him from telling his story for decades, Hutchings now provides a firsthand chronicle of the Falklands War, offering fascinating insight into the conduct of operations there. Colonel Hutchings was charged with transporting Special Force units onto the enemy occupied islands, either to gather intelligence or conduct offensive operations, including the Special Air Service's successful Pebble Island raid and its ill-fated raid on mainland Argentina. That raid, known as Operation MIKADO, has been little discussed. But as Captain of the Sea King involved, Hutchings gives an authoritative account of what went wrong both in the air and on the ground. He details the circumstances of his crash-landing, encounters with the Chilean authorities and British diplomats in Santiago, as well as the debriefing in an MI6 safe house on return to the UK

Book One Adventure After Another

Download or read book One Adventure After Another written by John Lewis and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not about heroes like military pilots who risk their lives protecting our country, or commercial pilots who wing their way across the world transporting us from one place to the other or general pilots who daily perform tasks that can only be done from the air. We owe all of these pilots a great respect and gratitude for the job that they do. Most of the books written are about them. This book is about the private pilot who is the average man or woman who does not intend to risk their lives flying an airplane. This book is about those people who simply want to take to the air for the joy of being airborne and for the intellectual challenge of keeping up with the birds. If I thought for a moment that flying was not safe, I would not step into an airplane. For years I felt that flying was for the foolhardy until by chance I discovered that flying is safer than driving a car if you learn how to fly and follow the rules. This book attempts to describe the transition from becoming a land person to becoming an air person and the pleasures experienced on the way. John O. Lewis My first adventure with John as an airplane pilot gave me the surprise of my life. After vehemently refusing to go flying with him, I agreed once and for all to join him in the cockpit for a brief tour around Chicago. Once airborne my imagined fears were replaced by sheer joy of seeing the sights and realizing the wonders both above and below. This initial flight was the beginning of adventures of our lifetime. Never again was any coaxing on his part needed for me to join him on flights. Edna M. Lewis

Book Fighting in the Electromagnetic Spectrum

Download or read book Fighting in the Electromagnetic Spectrum written by Thomas Wildenberg and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naval warfare was confined for centuries to surface combat, or undersea clashes. In the twentieth century aerial warfare became the third domain and shortly thereafter, the electromagnetic spectrum also appeared. Until now, little has been written about this important aspect of military conflict on the high seas. In Fighting in the Electromagnetic Spectrum author Thomas Wildenberg provides the first book covering these aircraft, their missions, and the methodology of conducting combat in all its forms along this fourth domain, the electromagnetic spectrum. When navies began to make use of the airwaves, they soon discovered those waves could also be exploited as a source of information about the opposing force. This would later be termed Electronic Intelligence (ELINT). Navies learned the value of interrupting or corrupting the enemy’s communication signals that were transmitted in the “ether,” thus began a method of fighting termed Electronic Warfare (EW). Wildenberg cuts through the secrecy about this understandably mysterious domain of combat. He offers details on aircraft and methods and provides a layman’s set of definitions of terms. Wildenberg shares lessons learned from World War II skirmishes a as well as clashes in the Korean and Vietnam wars, while providing a Fighting in the Electromagnetic Spectrum offers the reader a foundational understanding of this complex form of combat in all its forms. This volume discloses rarely covered concepts and methods which will shape future great power future conflict.
