Book excerpt: I'm not just writing this for Frankie, I'm doing it for me... Almost everything I write is going to be embarrassing, but I've got to do something. I have no choice. I try to shake things off, but they refuse to budge. So, as well as telling Frankie's story here I'm checking my memory, that I've got everything right. The friendship. Our secrets. The things we shared. The extraordinary way it ended. And the flying. That most of all.... FLYING FOR FRANKIE is story about friendship, teenage aspirations, terminal illness, religion and celebration, failure and success - and a serious fear of flying. Written with the same light touch as THE MRS MARRIDGE PROJECT, it's the story of bed-bound Frankie, whose imagination flies daily, and her best friend, Charis, who wants to do something to celebrate Frankie's life - and do it now while she's still alive. Charis has decided to 'fly for her friend', who's always dreamt of being a pilot but now won't be able to. She wants to do something impossibly difficult to celebrate what Frankie means to her, and make her proud. The trouble is that Frankie's always been fearless and up for anything, whereas Charis is a wimp. She embarks on a series of training courses to paraglide, parachute jump, take the controls of a helicopter and pilot a hot-air balloon. By doing something brave she hopes she might somehow tip the scales of life in her friend's favour. A topical, heart-rending new novel from award-winning writer Pauline Fisk. Flying for Frankie portrays a very real, utterly brave and ultimately uplifting story of two girls learning to live life in the face of terminal illness. 'Fisk has an effortless understanding of what it feels like to be a child.' Kate Kellaway, Observer

Book Flying with Frankie

Book excerpt: I'm about to lose my wife and I don't want to lose my son, too. That depressing thought kept racing through my mind all day long, as my five year old boy, Frankie, and I were enjoying our first day ever at an amusement park in 1994. My marriage was shot and beyond repair; and I now faced many a parent's dread: what effect would the divorce have on my son, and how will I maintain any semblance of a normal rapport with him? The answer, miraculously was only hours away. Right before exiting the immense park for the evening, my rambunctious boy somehow lured me onto the thrill arena's big roller coaster for a ride. That solitary coaster journey hooked us up for life to the joys of gallivanting upon these flying machines, and for the next fifteen summers that's basically all we did. We ultimately shared over 300 days together in amusement parks, as we traveled 40,000 miles by car, plane, and sleeper-car train to every thrill park in the country that housed anything close to resembling a roller coaster. The divorce came soon enough, and inflicted its normal dose of hardship and despair. But it proved to be no match for the wonderful memories that accompanied all of our trips, and the steadfast bond that grew between us, merely in pursuit of our beloved joyrides. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This military history of the Iraqi revolt in WWII, told from the point of view of the men who were there, is “a fantastic and enjoyable book” (Col. Tim Collins, OBE). In the spring of 1941, on an airfield fifty-five miles from Baghdad, a group of RAF airmen and soldiers were outnumbered by the better equipped Iraqi forces—soldiers who were aided by the Germans and Italians. After thirty days, this battle resulted in the first real defeat of the Axis powers in World War II. Hitler’s Gulf War presents the story of the Iraqi revolt from the perspectives of the British, Iraqi, and Germans who were involved in the battle. Along with the group at the airfield, historian Barrie G. James examines the small relief column of cavalry, infantry, and Bedouins who traveled across a five-hundred-mile unmapped desert to support the RAF. With Germany’s successes in Greece and the Western Desert in 1941, a British defeat here would have changed the course of World War II. Hitler’s Gulf War traces how the battle destroyed Axis aspirations in the Middle East and also set the scene for Iraq’s future relations with the West.

Book The Avro Manchester

  • Pages : pages

Download or read book The Avro Manchester written by Robert Kirby and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its earliest, dark days, Bomber Command operated deep into occupied Europe with the underdeveloped Avro Manchester. Powered by the Rolls Royce Vulture, it was the only British aircraft to use this engine operationally. The design was revised and amended several times, with three enlargements of the flying surfaces required to provide an adequate flight envelope. Nevertheless, Manchesters entered service without adequate type-testing, leading to four groundings in the first ten months of use. Aircrews were faced with airframe and engine challenges, and the Manchester continued to evolve as the war was being fought. Despite this, seven RAF squadrons would eventually use 202 Manchesters (with 538 Vultures) on 1,260 sorties. Manchesters may have contributed to Bomber Command failures (as set out in the Butt Report of August 1941), but they also contributed to its success in denying German capital ships the naval base at Brest. Bomber Command’s persistence with the type was soon shown to be wise, as the Manchester was developed into the famous and war-winning Avro Lancaster. This second edition of The Avro Manchester: The Legend Behind the Lancaster retains the keen analysis and gripping narrative of the first, but it also fills many gaps, revises key passages, and provides six appendices for references. It is richly illustrated with 200 images, many of which are previously unpublished. Illustrations: 190 black-and-white photographs

Book A Pioneer in Aviation

Download or read book A Pioneer in Aviation written by Robert Dye and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an early age, Brice H. Goldsborough exhibited an unending curiosity about the world around him; he was interested in almost anything mechanical, was inquisitive about weather patterns, and yearned to know more about aerodynamics. This lifelong quest for information led him to found Pioneer Instrument Company in New York in 1919, a firm that eventually became one of the worlds largest producers of reliable aviation instruments. In this biography, author Robert Dye, Goldsboroughs great-nephew, tells the story of a man who became an expert in meteorology, navigation, and aircraft instrument design and changed the course of aviation history. Based on personal letters, articles, and news clippings, A Pioneer in Aviation follows Goldsboroughs life as a teen, his time in the navy studying electricity, and his accomplishments, such as establishing Chinas first offshore radio station and supervising the construction of Haitis first radio station. Detailing one of aviations unsung heroes, A Pioneer in Aviation shows the man who designed, built, and installed the instrument panel for The Spirit of St. Louis and flew with Charles Lindbergh during September 1927 and how he came to be associated with other great names in aviation history such as Glenn Curtiss, Clyde Cessna, Walter Beech, and Igor Sikorsky.
