Of particular interest to those working in non-specialist laboratories, Aromatic Fluorination includes detailed descriptions of the new electrophilic routes to fluoroaromatics, in addition to traditional routes and alternative methods involving radical chemistry. Because one of the most important fluorine-containing substituent is CF3, the book explains routes to benzotrifluorides (ArCF3), including traditional industrial methods and modern alternatives employing C-1 halofluorocarbons and other fluoroaliphatics. An alternative to CF3 is CF3S, and several methods of synthesizing aromatic CF3S-containing molecules are described. Book excerpt: The products of the reaction between n-butane and nitrogen trifluoride; n-butane, nitrogen trifluoride, and oxygen; vinylidene fluoride and oxygen; hexafluoroethane, oxygen, and hydrogen have been studied. The gases were reacted in a calorimeter bomb and the products were analyzed with a mass spectrometer. Hydrogen fluoride was trapped on sodium fluoride; fluorine on mercury. The results showed: (1) that fluorine reacts preferentially with hydrogen to produce hydrogen fluoride; (2) no C-F bonds are produced until there is more than enough fluorine to react with hydrogen; and (3) comparison of adiabatic theoretical calculations with experimentally determined results indicates that shifting equilibrium is followed upon cooling the combustion products from the flame temperature down to about 1700 K.
