Book Nonlinear Optical Techniques to Study Polymer Adsorption

Download or read book Nonlinear Optical Techniques to Study Polymer Adsorption written by Ashwin B. Rao and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The adsorption of Fluorescein Isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled polystyrene at the water-toluene interface was studied by two-photon fluorescence spectroscopy. This sytem was used to develop a model to predict the concentration of polymer molecules adsorbed at the interface. For FITC labeled polystyrene of Mw: 50.5 Kg/mole, the concentration at the interface was found to be 1 mg/m2. This corresponds to an area of 82 nm2 per molecule, which indicates that the adsorbed molecules adopt a brush like conformation at the interface. The results also show the importance of accounting for fluorescence resonance energy transfer effects (FRET) in determining the concentration of the adsorbed polymers. Neglecting FRET at the interface results in an underestimation of the surface excess by a factor of 2. We have also studied the orientation of the chemical groups of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) adsorbed at the sapphire-CCI4 interface using a technique known as infrared-visible sum frequency generation spectroscopy. The ester methyl groups of PMMA are strongly oriented at the sapphire interface while the methylene and alpha methyl groups of the polymer chain appear to be disordered. The orientation of the ester methyl groups at the interface of a PMMA film and sapphire is very similar to the orientation of the ester methyl groups of an isolated PMMA chain adsorbed on sapphire. The structure of the adsorbed polymer chains is not affected by the solvent quality nor is it affected by the degree of polymerization of the chain."--Iii-iv

Book Fluorescent polymers for sensing and imaging

Download or read book Fluorescent polymers for sensing and imaging written by Seiichi Uchiyama and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, all scientists recognize that fluorescent probes play important roles in wide research areas, from chemistry to biology. By combining this fact with specific functional benefits from synthetic polymers, fluorescent polymeric probes are occasionally superior to small organic and inorganic fluorescent (or luminescent) probes in terms of sensitivity, robustness, and multiple functionality. The targets of fluorescent polymeric probes have extended from chemical species to physical parameter. This special issue is a platform for researches to develop a novel fluorescent polymeric probe and to establish a new analytical method using a conventional fluorescent polymeric probe. Related researches, e.g., fluorometric investigation of functional polymers, are also included.

Book Microfabrication of Stimuli Responsive Polymers

Download or read book Microfabrication of Stimuli Responsive Polymers written by Chuanliang Feng and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to interfacial reactions in confinement on stimuli-responsive homopolymer and diblock copolymer films. It also includes investigations concerning the immobilization of (bio)molecules and the fabrication of biomolecular patterns by reactive microcontact printing on these reactive polymer films. In turn, the book takes advantage of the microphase separation of diblock copolymer films to study the fabrication of nanopatterns, which could contribute to the future development of a model system that allows us to area-selectively deposit and address (bio)molecules. Given its scope, the book broadens readers’ perspective on the microfabrication of stimuli-responsive polymers.

Book Characterization of Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Characterization of Solid Surfaces written by Philip F. Kane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until comparatively recently, trace analysis techniques were in general directed toward the determination of impurities in bulk materials. Methods were developed for very high relative sensitivity, and the values determined were average values. Sampling procedures were devised which eliminated the so-called sampling error. However, in the last decade or so, a number of developments have shown that, for many purposes, the distribution of defects within a material can confer important new properties on the material. Perhaps the most striking example of this is given by semiconductors; a whole new industry has emerged in barely twenty years based entirely on the controlled distribu tion of defects within what a few years before would have been regarded as a pure, homogeneous crystal. Other examples exist in biochemistry, metallurgy, polyiners and, of course, catalysis. In addition to this of the importance of distribution, there has also been a recognition growing awareness that physical defects are as important as chemical defects. (We are, of course, using the word defect to imply some dis continuity in the material, and not in any derogatory sense. ) This broadening of the field of interest led the Materials Advisory Board( I} to recommend a new definition for the discipline, "Materials Character ization," to encompass this wider concept of the determination of the structure and composition of materials. In characterizing a material, perhaps the most important special area of interest is the surface.
