Book Fluidic Virtual Aerosurfaces for Flow Control Applications

Download or read book Fluidic Virtual Aerosurfaces for Flow Control Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research program has focused on a novel approach to the control of the aerodynamic performance of lifting surfaces by fluidic modification of their apparent aerodynamic shape, or virtual aerosurface shaping, This flow control approach emphasizes fluidic modification of the "apparent" aerodynamic shape of the surface with the objective of altering or prescribing the streamwise pressure gradient. Control is typically effected by the interactions of arrays of synthetic jet actuators with the cross flow that displace the local streamlines near the surface and thereby induces an "apparent" modification of the flow boundary. The operating frequency of the control jets is high enough so that the actuation period at least an order of magnitude lower than the relevant characteristic time scale of the flow. Therefore, the interaction domains between the control jets and the cross flow are quasi-steady and hence the induced aerodynamics forces are virtually time-invariant.

Book Fluidic Control of Virtual Aerosurfaces

Download or read book Fluidic Control of Virtual Aerosurfaces written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experimental research has focused on modifying the global aerodynamic characteristics of lifting surfaces at cruise (low) angles of attack when the baseline flow is fully attached. Using hybrid actuators, trapped vorticity concentrations at the leading and trailing edges affect aerodynamic forces and moment without control surfaces. Hybrid actuators employ miniature obstructions with integrated synthetic jet actuators. Actuation on the pressure surface near the leading edge results in a substantial (up to 50%) reduction in pressure drag and total drag (29%) with virtually no loss in lift, leading to a higher lift to drag ratio. When the actuation is applied near the trailing edge, the effects are bi-directional changes in pitching moments, which can be continuously varied by controlling the actuation amplitude. Moreover, the same performance can be achieved at substantially reduced actuation power by exploiting transitory aerodynamic effects through pulse modulation. PIV studies of the flow in the vicinity of the actuators, in the boundary layer and the wake, were used in this investigation.

Download or read book Revolutionizing Aircraft Materials and Processes written by Spiros Pantelakis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the emerging needs of the aerospace industry by discussing recent developments and future trends of aeronautic materials. It is aimed at advancing existing materials and fostering the ability to develop novel materials with less weight, increased mechanical properties, more functionality, diverse manufacturing methods, and recyclability. The development of novel materials and multifunctional materials has helped to increase efficiency and safety, reduce costs, and decrease the environmental foot print of the aeronautical industry. In this book, integral metallic structures designed by disruptive concepts, including topology optimization and additive manufacturing, are highlighted.

Book A Course in Robust Control Theory

Download or read book A Course in Robust Control Theory written by Geir E. Dullerud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 90s robust control theory has seen major advances and achieved a new maturity, centered around the notion of convexity. The goal of this book is to give a graduate-level course on this theory that emphasizes these new developments, but at the same time conveys the main principles and ubiquitous tools at the heart of the subject. Its pedagogical objectives are to introduce a coherent and unified framework for studying the theory, to provide students with the control-theoretic background required to read and contribute to the research literature, and to present the main ideas and demonstrations of the major results. The book will be of value to mathematical researchers and computer scientists, graduate students planning to do research in the area, and engineering practitioners requiring advanced control techniques.

Book Composite Structures

Download or read book Composite Structures written by I.H. Marshall and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-09-30 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the Sixth International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/6) held at Paisley College, Scotland in September 1991. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College. It was co-sponsored by Scottish Enterprise, the National Engineering Laboratory, the US Army Research, Development and Standardisation Group-UK, Strathclyde Regional Council and Renfrew District Council. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful ICCS/1/2/3/4 and 5 held at Paisley in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989 respectively. As we enter the final decade of this century many organisations throughout the world are adopting a prophetic role by attempting to forecast future scientific advances and their associated impact on mankind. Although some would argue that to do so is folly, without such futuristic visionaries the world would be that much poorer. IntelJigent speculation based on research trends and historical advances, rather than fanciful theories, breathes a healthy air of enthusiasm into the scientific community. Surely this is the very oxygen necessary to ignite the fir~s of innovation and invention amongst pioneers of research.
