Book Modelling of Convective Heat and Mass Transfer in Rotating Flows

Download or read book Modelling of Convective Heat and Mass Transfer in Rotating Flows written by Igor V. Shevchuk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents results of the analytical and numerical modeling of convective heat and mass transfer in different rotating flows caused by (i) system rotation, (ii) swirl flows due to swirl generators, and (iii) surface curvature in turns and bends. Volume forces (i.e. centrifugal and Coriolis forces), which influence the flow pattern, emerge in all of these rotating flows. The main part of this work deals with rotating flows caused by system rotation, which includes several rotating-disk configurations and straight pipes rotating about a parallel axis. Swirl flows are studied in some of the configurations mentioned above. Curvilinear flows are investigated in different geometries of two-pass ribbed and smooth channels with 180° bends. The author demonstrates that the complex phenomena of fluid flow and convective heat transfer in rotating flows can be successfully simulated using not only the universal CFD methodology, but in certain cases by means of the integral methods, self-similar and analytical solutions. The book will be a valuable read for research experts and practitioners in the field of heat and mass transfer.

Book Fluid Flow Heat Transfer and Boiling in Micro Channels

Download or read book Fluid Flow Heat Transfer and Boiling in Micro Channels written by L. P. Yarin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-19 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of the book is uid dynamics and heat transfer in micro-channels. This problem is important for understanding the complex phenomena associated with single- and two-phase ows in heated micro-channels. The challenge posed by high heat uxes in electronic chips makes thermal management a key factor in the development of these systems. Cooling of mic- electronic components by new cooling technologies, as well as improvement of the existing ones, is becoming a necessity as the power dissipation levels of integrated circuits increases and their sizes decrease. Miniature heat sinks with liquid ows in silicon wafers could signi cantly improve the performance and reliability of se- conductor devices. The improvements are made by increasing the effective thermal conductivity, by reducing the temperature gradient across the wafer, by reducing the maximum wafer temperature, and also by reducing the number and intensity of localized hot spots. A possible way to enhance heat transfer in systems with high power density is to change the phase in the micro-channels embedded in the device. This has motivated a number of theoretical and experimental investigations covering various aspects of heat transfer in micro-channel heat sinks with phase change. The ow and heat transfer in heated micro-channels are accompanied by a n- ber of thermohydrodynamic processes, such as liquid heating and vaporization, bo- ing, formation of two-phase mixtures with a very complicated inner structure, etc., which affect signi cantly the hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of the co- ing systems.

This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow and heat transfer in a curved channel of aspect ratio 6 and inner- to outer-wall radius ratio 0.96 were studied. Secondary currents and large longitudinal vortices were found. The heat-transfer rates of the outer and inner walls were independently controlled to maintain a constant wall temperature. Heating the inner wall increased the pressure drop along the channel length, whereas heating the outer wall had little effect. Outer-wall heat transfer was as much as 40 percent greater than the straight-channel correlation, and inner-wall heat transfer was 22 percent greater than the straight-channel correlation. Book Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Rotating Porous Media

Download or read book Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Rotating Porous Media written by Peter Vadasz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book concentrates the available knowledge on rotating fluid flow and heat transfer in porous media in one single reference. Dr. Vadasz develops the fundamental theory of rotating flow and heat transfer in porous media and introduces systematic classification and identification of the relevant problems. An initial distinction between rotating flows in isothermal heterogeneous porous systems and natural convection in homogeneous non-‐isothermal porous systems provides the two major classes of problems to be considered. A few examples of solutions to selected problems are presented, highlighting the significant impact of rotation on the flow in porous media.

Download or read book Processing by Centrifugation written by Liya L. Regel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on Materials Processing at High Gravity, held at Clarkson University, May 29 to June 2, 2000. There were 73 attendees from 16 countries. Since the topics extended well beyond materials processing, it was felt appropriate to name this proceedings "Centrifugal Processing." Processing by Centrifugation includes the traditional bench-scale centrifuges, as well as all rotating systems utilizing the centrifugal and Coriolis forces to provide unique performance. Centrifugation led to the formation of sticky porous Teflon membranes, as well as improved polymeric solar cells. Centrifugation on large equipment improved the chemical vapor deposition of diamond films, influenced the growth and dissolution of semiconductor crystals, and elucidated the influence of gravity on coagulation of colloidal Teflon. A million g centrifuge was constructed and used to study sedimentation in solids and to prepare compositionally graded materials and new phases. Rotation of a pipe about its axis allowed the casting of large-diameter metal alloy pipes as well as coating the interior of pipes with a cermet utilizing self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. Such coatings are highly corrosion and erosion resistant. Flow on a rotating disk was shown to be useful for process intensification, such as large-scale manufacturing of nano-particles, polymerization reactions, and heat & mass transfer. Several theoretical studies dealt with the influence of rotation on fluid convection on surfaces and in pipes, tubes, and porous media. These have applications to integrated-circuit chip manufacturing, alloy casting, oil production, crystal growth, and the operation of rotating machinery.

Book Flow and Heat Transfer in Rotating disc Systems

Download or read book Flow and Heat Transfer in Rotating disc Systems written by J. M. Owen and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the flow and heat transfer between co-rotating discs, and unifies the subject by means of physical insight and mathematical models, validated using experimental data. Many phenomena, unique to rotating flows, are explained, and empirical correlations and theoretical methods, suitable for design purposes, are presented. Data is provided within the book for validating CFD codes which are being increasingly used to compute the flow in rotating-disc systems. Since the publication of Volume 1 in 1989, there has been an increasing interest in rotating disc systems, mainly from research workers and engine designers concerned with understanding and computing the complex flow and heat transfer that occur inside the internal cooling-systems of gas-turbine engines. This book should be of interest to them as it may assist them in making more efficient use of cooling air systems, resulting in both economic and environmental benefits.

Book Computational Analyses for Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Different Curved Geometries

Download or read book Computational Analyses for Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Different Curved Geometries written by Carlin Miller Lucente and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models were developed to simulate fluid flow and heat transfer in a variety of helical channel geometries: circular and elliptical. Laminar flow was observed for Reynolds number between 200 and 1000. Code validation was done for developing steady laminar flow in a circular curved channel. The CFD results were compared to previous numerical results to verify that the model was producing valid results. The curve of the channel has a centrifugal effect on the fluid flow creating secondary flow known as Dean cells. This secondary flow moves the location of the maximum axial velocity towards the outer wall of the channel and alters the developing temperature profiles as well. The helical models were designed to assess if the effect of the curve increases the rate of heat transfer when a constant surface temperature is applied to the wall of the channel. Different channel geometries were used to determine the effects on fluid flow and heat transfer in a helical channel. A channel with a 180° turn was also modeled in two different ways. One with a rounded 180° curve and the other with three perpendicular channels joined together to create a square 180° turn. The three combined channels are typically easier and less expensive to manufacture, but the fluid flow and heat transfer properties need to be considered before selecting the design. The helical models produce similar results. The Dean vortices produced in the secondary flow within the fluid aids in the heat transfer properties of the fluid. Of all the helical cases, a horizontal ellipse cross section achieved the highest outlet-inlet temperature difference, especially for higher Reynolds numbers. Even though the horizontal elliptical helix model produced the highest temperature difference, the circular helix model produced the highest percent increase over its straight model. Using a figure of merit to compare the Nusselt numbers and friction factors for each case, the circular helix geometry proved to me the best design option. The three combined channels produced better heat transfer results than the rounded channel for higher Reynolds numbers, with higher mean outlet temperatures. At lower Reynolds numbers, the results were very similar with only a 0.4% difference in results.
