Book Dynamic Flowsheet Simulation of Solids Processes and its Application to Fluidized Bed Spray Granulation

Download or read book Dynamic Flowsheet Simulation of Solids Processes and its Application to Fluidized Bed Spray Granulation written by Maksym Dosta and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2013-01-24 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this contribution the novel system for the dynamic flowsheet simulation of solids processes is presented. The system is generally applicable for all types of solids processes without limitation for specific process types. In a distinction to the existing flowsheet simulation systems, which have been mainly developed with a focus on fluid processes, the novel system allows to treat multidimensional distributed parameters properly. To perform dynamic modeling of various industrial plants the library of dynamic units has been developed. These units can be easily added per drag and drop functionality onto the flowsheet and in this way the necessary process structure can be created. To make a simulation of various granulation plants the new dynamic models of fluidized bed spray granulation have been developed and implemented. The fluidized bed spray granulation is widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and agricultural industries. In the majority of cases the granulation plants have a complex dynamic or even unstable behavior. Therefore, the dynamic simulation is one the of most effective way to understand process transient behavior, to optimize process and to develop different control strategies. However, for the flowsheet simulation primarily empirical or semi-empirical models are used, where material microparameters and specific apparatus properties are poorly considered. To obtain more detailed estimation of process behavior, the multiscale modeling concept of solids processes has been developed. On the basis of the multiscale modeling methodology the novel multiscale simulation environment has been created. This environment consists of several models, which describe the process on different time and length scales, and has been effectively applied to the fluidized bed spray granulation process.

Book Modeling and Flowsheet Simulation of Vibrated Fluidized Bed Dryers Band 18

Download or read book Modeling and Flowsheet Simulation of Vibrated Fluidized Bed Dryers Band 18 written by Sören Ernst Lehmann and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluidized bed dryers are the prime choice when it comes to drying of heat sensitive products, commonly processed in the pharmaceutical and food industry. As many products in these industries are fine and cohesive, mechanical vibration of the dryer is used to enable or improve fluidization. Thus, the goal of this thesis is the development of a fluidized bed drying model that accounts for the influence of mechanical vibration of the dryer, as well as its implementation in an open-source flowsheet simulation framework. Continuously operated fluidized bed dryers under steady-state conditions are the focus of this thesis. The aim during model development and implementation is the broadest possible application range of the model. A custom-built vibrated fluidized bed dryer is designed and constructed for comprehensive investigations of fluidized bed hydrodynamics and drying kinetics. Based on experimental investigations, a semi-empirical model for hydrodynamics of fine and cohesive powders is developed. The new model is combined with established models to allow for the flowsheet simulation of fluidized bed dryers for particles of all Geldart groups. Additionally, the influence of vibration is accounted for. Comprehensive validation experiments are performed for particles of different Geldart groups, different dryer geometries and a variety of process parameters, including mechanical vibration. Comparison of model predictions with experimental data attributes high accuracy of predicted particle and gas properties. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses are conducted to identify potential weaknesses in underlying model assumptions. Hereby, the validity of underlying assumptions is confirmed and potential optimization parameters for different applications are identified. The proposed model is unprecedented in terms of range of process parameters, variety of particle properties and dryer geometries, tested and found valid for.

Book CFD Modeling of Complex Chemical Processes

Download or read book CFD Modeling of Complex Chemical Processes written by Li Xi and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which uses numerical analysis to predict and model complex flow behaviors and transport processes, has become a mainstream tool in engineering process research and development. Complex chemical processes often involve coupling between dynamics at vastly different length and time scales, as well as coupling of different physical models. The multiscale and multiphysics nature of those problems calls for delicate modeling approaches. This book showcases recent contributions in this field, from the development of modeling methodology to its application in supporting the design, development, and optimization of engineering processes.

Book Practical Methods for Simulation of Compressible Flow and Structure Interactions

Download or read book Practical Methods for Simulation of Compressible Flow and Structure Interactions written by Nipun Kwatra and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a semi-implicit method for simulating inviscid compressible flow and its extensions for strong implicit coupling of compressible flow with Lagrangian solids, and artificial transition of fluid from compressible flow to incompressible flow regime for graphics applications. First we present a novel semi-implicit method for alleviating the stringent CFL condition imposed by the sound speed in simulating inviscid compressible flow with shocks, contacts and rarefactions. The method splits the compressible flow flux into two parts -- an advection part and an acoustic part. The advection part is solved using an explicit scheme, while the acoustic part is solved using an implicit method allowing us to avoid the sound speed imposed CFL restriction. Our method leads to a standard Poisson equation similar to what one would solve for incompressible flow, but has an identity term more similar to a diffusion equation. In the limit as the sound speed goes to infinity, one obtains the Poisson equation for incompressible flow. This implicit pressure solve also lends itself nicely to solve for the pressure and coupling forces at a solid fluid interface. With this pressure solve as the foundation, we then develop a novel method to implicitly two-way couple Eulerian compressible flow to volumetric Lagrangian solids. The method works for both deformable and rigid solids and for arbitrary equations of state. Similar to previous fluid-structure interaction methods, we apply pressure forces to the solid and enforce a velocity boundary condition on the fluid in order to satisfy a no-slip constraint. Unlike previous methods, however, we apply these coupled interactions implicitly by adding the constraint to the pressure system and combining it with any implicit solid forces in order to obtain a strongly coupled system. Because our method handles the fluid-structure interactions implicitly, we avoid introducing any new time step restrictions and obtain stable results even for high density-to-mass ratios, where explicit methods struggle or fail. We exactly conserve momentum and kinetic energy (thermal fluid-structure interactions are not considered) at the fluid-structure interface, and hence naturally handle highly non-linear phenomenon such as shocks, contacts and rarefactions. The implicit pressure solve allows our method to be used for any sound speed efficiently. In particular as the sound speed goes to infinity, we obtain the standard Poisson equation for incompressible flow. This allows our method to work seamlessly and efficiently as the sound speed in the underlying flow field changes. Building on this feature of our method, we next develop a practical approach to integrating shock wave dynamics into traditional smoke simulations. Previous methods for doing this either simplified away the compressible component of the flow and were unable to capture shock fronts or used a prohibitively expensive explicit method that limits the time step of the simulation long after the relevant shock waves and rarefactions have left the domain. Instead, using our semi-implicit formulation allows us to take time steps on the order of fluid velocity. As we handle the acoustic fluid effects implicitly, we can artificially drive the sound speed c of the fluid to infinity without going unstable or driving the time step to zero. This permits the fluid to transition from compressible flow to the far more tractable incompressible flow regime once the interesting compressible flow phenomena (such as shocks) have left the domain of interest, and allows the use of state-of-the-art smoke simulation techniques.

Book Continuum Scale Simulation of Engineering Materials

Download or read book Continuum Scale Simulation of Engineering Materials written by Dierk Raabe and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 885 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a gap by presenting our current knowledge and understanding of continuum-based concepts behind computational methods used for microstructure and process simulation of engineering materials above the atomic scale. The volume provides an excellent overview on the different methods, comparing the different methods in terms of their respective particular weaknesses and advantages. This trains readers to identify appropriate approaches to the new challenges that emerge every day in this exciting domain. Divided into three main parts, the first is a basic overview covering fundamental key methods in the field of continuum scale materials simulation. The second one then goes on to look at applications of these methods to the prediction of microstructures, dealing with explicit simulation examples, while the third part discusses example applications in the field of process simulation. By presenting a spectrum of different computational approaches to materials, the book aims to initiate the development of corresponding virtual laboratories in the industry in which these methods are exploited. As such, it addresses graduates and undergraduates, lecturers, materials scientists and engineers, physicists, biologists, chemists, mathematicians, and mechanical engineers.
