Supreme Queen Bee, Queen Bluefire, no longer wants the responsibility of getting all the flowers to grow. Her bees want to play and have fun. They no longer want to work to pollinate the flowers. Oh dear, what's Mother Nature to do? Reviews from educators... "In the tradition of established folk and fairy tales, Mr. Schwartz has created a variety of engaging characters in this imaginative environmental trilogy. The message of preservation of humans and their environment is an important one for our youth." Dr. Richard Di Patri, Superintendent, Brevard Public Schools, Florida "The environment and conservation are becoming increasingly important to keeping our planet livable. Tom Schwartz has written a book to help children understand the importance of each creature in the scheme of things. The three stories in this book are tied together by the interaction of the wonderful, believable characters... The stories are well plotted with plenty of action and peril to keep even reluctant readers interested. The story shows how teamwork really pays off, and how the action of one can affect the whole planet. The vulnerability of the earth and it's creatures is stressed, and the whole ties in nicely with school curriculum. Tom Schwartz is a gifted writer, and this is a much needed contribution to children's literature and a great addition to your child's library." Beverly J. Rowe, MyShelf.com "Tom's stories about Mother Nature and her helpers left a big impact on the children, which will help make our Earth a cleaner place." Diane Goodson, Curriculum Resource Teacher, Eccleston Elementary School, Orlando, Florida "Tom visited out school and the children were enthralled with his stories about Mother Nature. Great message about saving the environment." Maureen Tassone, Media Specialist, Christa McAuliffe Elementary School, Palm Bay, Florida "Tom's Mother Nature stories reinforce what we teach about the environment. Our students loved the characters and their parts in helping Mother Nature." Sharen Talbert, Principal, Mims Elementary School, Mims, Florida

Written by an esteemed authority in the field, this book includes: Greatly expanded coverage of plant species, including significantly increased attention to commercial cultivars Sensible cross-referencing for plant selection based on more than two dozen design criteria, with lists arranged according to such vital factors as size, hardiness, and environmental requirements Hundreds of crisp textural diagrams portraying each primary species at 15 and 40 years in relation to average human height More than 400 photographs depicting plants of exceptional visual interest Maps and graphs, including a full-color map of hardiness zones, offering invaluable visual summaries of major design considerations Succinct explorations of problems and maintenance issues for each species, diminishing the complications of choosing among high- and low-maintenance plants An index listing plants by their scientific and common names Now in its second edition, this book remains the core reference on landscape design in eastern North America—intelligently organized for maximum planning efficiency. Enhanced with up-to-date coverage of additional shrubs, trees, and their cultivars, as well as expanded listings of plants classified by characteristics, Landscape Plants for Eastern North America continues to provide all the information necessary for landscape designing in the region. This complete guide provides a concise description of each plant species' function, adaptability, seasonal interest, growth rate, common problems, maintenance, cultivars, and related species, along with more than 1000 high-quality scale drawings and hundreds of photographs. And Dr. Flint's book goes beyond many works on landscape plants because of its unique focus on the landscape design process: with cross-referencing in more than two dozen categories based on such design criteria as size, site requirements, and soil prerequisites, readers will easily be able to determine which plants are appropriate to their needs. Throughout the book, a variety of illustrations provide quick reference on a range of important considerations. A full-color map represents the hardiness zones of the eastern region, and bar graphs indicate such adaptability considerations as light, wind, soil moisture, and pH requirements. For each primary species, a seasonal clock furnishes a straightforward visual delineation of the duration and intensity of color throughout the year. Encompassing plant life from herbaceous ground covers to large trees, this is a most comprehensive, easy-to-use resource for anyone involved in landscaping in eastern North America.

Book Dinner on Mars

Download or read book Dinner on Mars written by Lenore Newman and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This culinary cosmic outing is as creative as it is informative.” — STARRED review, Publishers Weekly From Impossible Burgers to lab-made sushi, two witty, plugged-in food scientists explore leading-edge AgTech for the answer to feeding a settlement on Mars — and nine billion Earthlings too Feeding a Martian is one of the greatest challenges in the history of agriculture. Will a Red Planet menu involve cheese and ice cream made from vats of fermented yeast? Will medicine cabinets overflow with pharmaceuticals created from engineered barley grown using geothermal energy? Will the protein of choice feature a chicken breast grown in a lab? Weird, wonderful, and sometimes disgusting, figuring out “what’s for dinner on Mars” is far from trivial. If we can figure out how to sustain ourselves on Mars, we will know how to do it on Earth too. In Dinner on Mars, authors Fraser and Newman show how setting the table off-planet will supercharge efforts to produce food sustainably here at home. For futurists, sci-fi geeks, tech nuts, business leaders, and anyone interested in the future of food, Dinner on Mars puts sustainability and adaptability on the menu in the face of our climate crisis.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on how the the scientific discovery of "plant sex" unfolded due to cultural biases, beliefs, and perceptions about plant reproduction. "Flora Unveiled" is a deep history of perceptions about plant gender and sexuality, from the Paleolithic to the nineteenth century. The evidence suggests that a plants-as-female gender bias both prevented the discovery of two sexes in plants until the late 17th century, and delayed its acceptance for another 150 years.

Book Functional Organization of the Plant Nucleus

Download or read book Functional Organization of the Plant Nucleus written by Iris Meier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a presentation to the Linnean Society of London in November 1831, the Scottish botanist Robert Brown (perhaps better known for his discovery of Brownian motion) mentioned almost as an afterthought that in orchid epidermal cells, a single “circular areola” could be seen, a “nucleus of the cell as perhaps it might be termed.” Thus, the term “nucleus” (from Latin nucleus or nuculeus, “little nut” or kernel) was born for the compartment of the eukaryotic cell that contains the maj- ity of genetic information. One hundred and seventy-seven years later, we know that the nucleus is the site where genetic information is stored in the form of DNA, and where it is protected from damage, duplicated, divided, recombined, repaired, and “expressed.” For the latter, the genetic information is faithfully transcribed from DNA to RNA, then released from the nucleus into the surrounding cytoplasm. Most likely translated into polypeptide chains, the information re-enters the nucleus in the form of diverse proteins that function in the processes listed above.
