Book excerpt: The intention of this report is to demonstrate the utility of theflow visualization water tunnel in the field of experimentalfluid dynamics and also provide guidance to its prospectiveusers. A brief description of the facility and its ancillaryequipment is followed by a short description of the flowvisualization techniques. To emphasize the diversity of subjectstested in the water tunnel, a list of typical experiments and anumber of photographs are presented.

Book Flow Visualization of the Airwake of an Oscillating Generic Ship Model

Download or read book Flow Visualization of the Airwake of an Oscillating Generic Ship Model written by John L. Biskaduros and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental flow visualization study was done on an oscillating generic ship model in the Low Speed Wind Tunnel Facility at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. The purpose was to visually analyze the flowfield around the model while simulating ship motion in rough seas, with a correspondingly modelled open-ocean atmospheric boundary layer. The two flow visualization techniques utilized were neutral density helium bubbles and a liquid aerosol, each technique providing varying degrees of on-body and off-body analysis. Limited success was achieved with the aerosol, but the helium bubbles produced excellent photographic results and an accurate visualization of the oscillating model's flow field was achieved.

Book Handbook Of Flow Visualization

Download or read book Handbook Of Flow Visualization written by Wen Jei Yang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from some of the world's leading experts, the second edition of this classic reference compiles all major techniques of flow visualization and demonstrates their applications in all fields of science and technology. A new chapter has been added that covers flow visualization applications in large wide tunnels for airplane and automobile testing. Several important examples of applications are included. A second new chapter details the use of infrared (IR) cameras for detecting and observing the boundary layer transition in industrial wind tunnels and flight testing of commercial transport airplanes. A final new chapter has been added on multiphase flow and pulsed-light velocimetry.

Book Experiments with a Model Water Tunnel

Download or read book Experiments with a Model Water Tunnel written by Eastman Nixon Jacobs and published by . This book was released on 1930 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a model water tunnel built in 1928 to investigate the possibility of using water tunnels for aerodynamics investigations at large scales. The model tunnel is similar to an open-throat wind tunnel, but uses water for the working fluid. Results are given of tests of the tunnel and also of some observations made with model airfoils in the tunnel to study the phenomena of cavitation. It is concluded that a water tunnel does not offer a convenient method of making aerodynamic investigations at large scales. A large diameter water tunnel would be of value chiefly for use in the study of cavitation.

Book An Assessment of Naval Hydromechanics Science and Technology

Download or read book An Assessment of Naval Hydromechanics Science and Technology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-04-17 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of the Navy maintains a vigorous science and technology (S&T) research program in those areas that are critically important to ensuring U.S. naval superiority in the maritime environment. A number of these areas depend largely on sustained Navy Department investments for their health, strength, and growth. One such area is naval hydromechanics, that is, the study of the hydrodynamic and hydroacoustic performance of Navy ships, submarines, underwater vehicles, and weapons. A fundamental understanding of naval hydromechanics provides direct benefits to naval warfighting capabilities through improvements in the speed, maneuverability, and stealth of naval platforms and weapons. An Assessment of Naval Hydromechanics Science and Technology is an assessment of S&T research in the area of naval hydromechanics. This report assesses the Navy's research effort in the area of hydromechanics, identifies non-Navy-sponsored research and development efforts that might facilitate progress in the area, and provides recommendations on how the scope of the Navy's research program should be focused to meet future objectives.
