Book Flouride and Dental Health Education and Its Effects on Dental Caries in Elementary School Children

Download or read book Flouride and Dental Health Education and Its Effects on Dental Caries in Elementary School Children written by Alice Ruiz and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental disease, particularly dental caries, is the most prevalent health problem among school age children in the United States, occurring five to eight times as often as asthman, the second most chronic disease in children. More than half of all children have decay by the second grade and, upon completion of high school, 80% have dental decay. The proportion of untreated dental decay in permanent teeth of school aged children has been declining, but has increased in the primary dentition among children aged six to eight years, in which 52% had caries. Dental disease is also the number one preventable disease in this age group (Healthy People 2010,2000 p12-51). This Special Project will attempt to illustrate the prevalence of dental disease in school-aged children. A comparative study across two elementary schools in the Pomona Unified School District, will examine the effects of a school-based fluoride supplement program.

Child and Adolescent Health and Development explores the benefits that accrue from sustained and targeted interventions across the first two decades of life. The volume outlines the investment case for effective, costed, and scalable interventions for low-resource settings, emphasizing the cross-sectoral role of education. This evidence base can guide policy makers in prioritizing actions to promote survival, health, cognition, and physical growth throughout childhood and adolescence.

Download or read book Social Determinants of Health in Non communicable Diseases written by Katsunori Kondo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-11-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. This open access book is the first compilation that reviews a wide range of social determinants of health (SDHs) for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and healthy ageing in Japan. With the highest life expectancy and the largest elderly population in the world, Japan has witnessed health inequality by region and social class becoming more prevalent since the 2000s. The first half of this volume describes in detail major NCDs, such as cancers, heart and kidney diseases, diabetes, stroke, and metabolic syndrome. The second half, on the other hand, explores various SDHs relating to healthy ageing. All chapters review and focus on SDHs, particularly health inequality associated with socio-economic status and social capital, which are widely addressed in the field of social epidemiology. The book makes the argument that “Health for All” advocated by the WHO should be implemented based on social justice and benefits for the greater society. Public health researchers and policymakers, both in Japan and other nations, will gain scientific evidence from this book to prepare for the coming era as ageing becomes a global issue.

Book Advancing Oral Health in America

Download or read book Advancing Oral Health in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though it is highly preventable, tooth decay is a common chronic disease both in the United States and worldwide. Evidence shows that decay and other oral diseases may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. However, individuals and many health care professionals remain unaware of the risk factors and preventive approaches for many oral diseases. They do not fully appreciate how oral health affects overall health and well-being. In Advancing Oral Health in America, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) highlights the vital role that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) can play in improving oral health and oral health care in the United States. The IOM recommends that HHS design an oral health initiative which has clearly articulated goals, is coordinated effectively, adequately funded and has high-level accountability. In addition, the IOM stresses three key areas needed for successfully maintaining oral health as a priority issue: strong leadership, sustained interest, and the involvement of multiple stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. Advancing Oral Health in America provides practical recommendations that the Department of Health and Human Services can use to improve oral health care in America. The report will serve as a vital resource for federal health agencies, health care professionals, policy makers, researchers, and public and private health organizations.
