The critical text presented here is based upon a detailed examination of all the known witnesses of the florilegium, and it has been thoroughly compared with its sources. It is supplemented with a philological introduction which studies the manuscript tradition and the relationship of the manuscripts, explains the orthographical peculiarities of the tradition, defines the ratio edendi and discusses the most relevant textual corruptions of the archetype. The Florilegium Coislinianum, which deals with subjects ranging from the creation of angels to sin and virtues, has only recently received full attention from the scholarly community. This edition is part of a much larger collaborative project, in the context of which a research team, based at the KU Leuven, is currently studying and editing diverse sections of this florilegium.

A research team based at the KU Leuven has already published several sections of the anthology. The present volume offers the first critical edition of three significant sections, namely, Books [delta]-[zēta]. The Greek text is based on the collation of more than 25 witnesses and is accompanied by a set of apparatuses: manuscripts, sources, parallels in other anthologies, titles, apparatus criticus, apparatuses of comparison with sources and other anthologies, and marginalia. The critical edition is supplemented with a philological introduction which explores the manuscript tradition, offers a complete textual study of the witnesses that contain excerpts from Books [delta]-[zēta], and studies the links between the 'Florilegium Coislinianum' and other relevant Byzantine florilegia such as 'Sacra', 'Corpus Parisinum', and 'Loci communes' of a Ps.-Maximus the Confessor.

It reimagines the performance of their hymns during Great Lent and Holy Week in Constantinople. In doing so, it understands compunction as a liturgical emotion, intertwined with paradisal nostalgia, a desire for repentance and a wellspring of tears. For the faithful, liturgical emotions were embodied experiences that were enacted through sacred song and mystagogy. The three hymnographers chosen for this study span a period of nearly four centuries and had an important connection to Constantinople, which forms the topographical and liturgical nexus of the study. Their work also covers three distinct genres of hymnography: kontakion, kanon and sticheron idiomelon. Through these lenses of period, place and genre this study examines the affective performativity hymns and the Byzantine experience of compunction.

Although some aspects of the Confessor's hermeneutical approach had already been tackled, a comprehensive analysis was still missing. Accordingly, this book fills a gap in Patristic studies. The study consists of three chapters. The first one deals with the logoi theory of Maximus being the ontological nucleus around which his whole theological thinking is organized. The second chapter examines Maximus' understanding of mystical ascension. Equipped with the "ontological" and "mystical" foundation, the third chapter analyzes thoroughly the hermeneutics of Maximus as such, attempting to show its coherence and rootedness in the general christological perspective of the Confessor.
