Book excerpt: Two artists, two generations, two mediums: German artist and sound artist/computer composer Florian Hecker (b. 1975) and American Light Space artist John McCracken (19342011) together probe the experimental capacity of the white cube gallery space. Fiberglass-coated, monochrome planks by McCracken spanning the floor and the walls of the building evoke a juncture between painting and sculpture, while Heckers computer-generated sound pieces, piped into the rooms by suspended speakers, dramatize both space and time. Shifting boundaries and intersections of sculpture and sound interact with one another within the space of geometric, architectural, temporal and subjective formations. At the same time, the viewer/listener becomes more sensitized to the conditions, qualities, and degrees of intensity between the physical and the ephemeral. The small illustrated exhibition catalog includes installation shots, curatorial introduction by Christian Egger and comprehensive essay by curator Jo.o Ribas. The cover by Florian Hecker uses an objectness measure algorithm.

This book documents an exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien that took place from November 2017 to January 2018. In Hecker's multichannel installation Resynthese FAVN, the auditory stimuli produced from the objects within the exhibition space and the synthetic sounds he composed were designed to subliminally override the mechanical processes of human sense. The result was an intervention into the psychoacoustics of the audience, dramatizing their subjective experience through auditory hallucinations. The catalogue collects essays by curators, researchers, theorists, and art historians on Hecker's work and its relation to topics ranging from musique concrète, Mallarmé's poem "The Afternoon of a Faun," and computer music. The psychoacoustic phenomenon of Resynthese FAVN is illustrated with a series of tensor acoustic measurements resembling the colorized impressions of thermal imaging, which is followed by 270 pages of densely sprawling data tables abstracting sound and its textures into text. Book excerpt: This catalogue illustrates Stephan Dillemuth's elaborate solo show at the Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien, Graz, through installation photographs as well as texts by art historian Kerstin Stakemeier and theorist Helmut Draxler. The exhibition presented newly conceived works alongside works from the 1980s exhibited for the first time. Dillemuth's paintings, sculptures, video projections, and assemblages are brought together as a theatrical social group. Plaster-cast limbs appear unexpectedly from the ceiling, enmeshed within clock cogs or combined with boars' heads, cattle ears, and deer feet. Dillemuth's Bayernbilder (1979) were inspired by sentimental and trivial postcard motifs from Bavarian spa towns. In Schönheitsgalerie (1985), featuring over fifty works, Dillemuth explores questions of representation. His gallery turns against the idea of external beauty and how it is represented in art. The paintings, like the faces, develop a life of their own through the process of painting, which makes it possible to see a new kind of "beauty." Works that Dillemuth produced in the late 1980s in Chicago, exhibited for the first time, resemble disco decorations, and glitter in the light of a video projection. Is disco a "theater of cruelty"--an ecstatic place where all images, whether ugly or beautiful, mean or seductive, are transcendent? Addressing the question of the role of the artist in society, Dillemuth challenges the contemporary imperative that artists, as exemplars of individuality, are required to have a distinct authorial identity. Despite a history of working collaboratively and prioritizing artistic research, at the Künstlerhaus Dillemuth exposes himself as a solo artist, reconstructing the history of his work from the margins of group life that has taken shape in the midst of it. Here he reveals the consistency of the farce of his ego, the heroic yet bad-mannered delinquent artist subject. Dillemuth presents his aging body for all to see, playing with the boundaries between inside and outside, institution and alternative, and life and form. He developed his early sculptural work while studying painting at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in the late 1950s and early 1960s. While experimenting with increasingly three-dimensional canvases, the artist began to produce objects made with industrial materials, including plywood, sprayed lacquer and pigmented resin, creating the highly reflective, smooth surfaces that he was to become known for. Published on the occasion of the comprehensive presentation of McCracken's work at David Zwirner, New York in 2013, this catalogue charts the evolution of the artist's diverse oeuvre, encompassing both well-known and lesser-seen examples of his production from the early 1960s up through his death in 2011 with a range of sculptures, paintings, and sketches.
