Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timeless tale of love, lust, and politics, Tosca is one of the most popular operas ever written. In Tosca's Rome, Susan Vandiver Nicassio explores the surprising historical realities that lie behind Giacomo Puccini's opera and the play by Victorien Sardou on which it is based. By far the most "historical" opera in the active repertoire, Tosca is set in a very specific time and place: Rome, from June 17 to 18, 1800. But as Nicassio demonstrates, history in Tosca is distorted by nationalism and by the vehement anticlerical perceptions of papal Rome shared by Sardou, Puccini, and the librettists. To provide the historical background necessary for understanding Tosca, Nicassio takes a detailed look at Rome in 1800 as each of Tosca's main characters would have seen it—the painter Cavaradossi, the singer Tosca, and the policeman Scarpia. Finally, she provides a scene-by-scene musical and dramatic analysis of the opera. "[Nicassio] must be the only living historian who can boast that she once sang the role of Tosca. Her deep knowledge of Puccini's score is only to be expected, but her understanding of daily and political life in Rome at the close of the 18th century is an unanticipated pleasure. She has steeped herself in the period and its prevailing culture-literary, artistic, and musical-and has come up with an unusual, and unusually entertaining, history."—Paul Bailey, Daily Telegraph "In Tosca's Rome, Susan Vandiver Nicassio . . . orchestrates a wealth of detail without losing view of the opera and its pleasures. . . . Nicassio aims for opera fans and for historians: she may well enthrall both."—Publishers Weekly "This is the book that ranks highest in my estimation as the most in-depth, and yet highly entertaining, journey into the story of the making of Tosca."—Catherine Malfitano "Nicassio's prose . . . is lively and approachable. There is plenty here to intrigue everyone-seasoned opera lovers, musical novices, history buffs, and Italophiles."—Library Journal

Book excerpt: Opera recordings have been with us since the creation of the first wax cylinders. Now at a time when the 25-year reign of the compact disc appears to be coming to an end is the moment to take stock of the history of recordings of arguably the most popular composer of operas, Giacomo Puccini. In Giacomo Puccini: A Discography, librarian and music historian Roger Flury looks at each opera chronologically from Le Villi to Turandot, followed by sections on Puccini's instrumental, chamber, orchestral, and solo vocal works. Details of each complete opera are listed by recording date, followed by excerpts in the order in which they occur in the opera. Recordings of each aria are listed alphabetically by the name of the artist. For ease of use, Flury establishes as the main criteria for inclusion those recordings assigned a commercial issue number and available for purchase. This book does not limit itself to mainstream recordings but includes as well 'unofficial' recordings taken from broadcasts or illegally recorded in theaters, ensuring that the audio recording history of Puccini is free of gaps. (Video and DVD issues, whether of staged performances or excerpts in concert, are not included unless they have been issued in a sound-only format.) This volume brings together information on nearly 10,000 recordings of Puccini's music. It provides a comprehensive overview of the recorded history of the composer's works and serves as a useful guide for the transfer of recordings from one format to another.

Book excerpt: Jean Louise Finch, better known as Scout from Harper Lee's classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, is now a middle school history teacher in Savannah, Georgia. In the relevant and insightful new novel A Row to Hoe, Jean decides to teach her students about slavery in pre-Civil War America, believing that such disturbing subjects are easier to learn about when thought of in light of potential positive outcomes. Jean reviews the institution of slavery, several slave narratives, and discusses the Underground Railroad as well as the Abolitionist movement and racism. After teaching her class about slavery, one of her students, 12-year-old Lisa, loses one leg below the knee, only to find that her remaining ankle becomes very strong, because it has to compensate for the inadequacies of her prosthesis. Lisa eventually finds that her new challenges can be a positive force in her life. Deborah Norton wrote this book after learning that black rap artists use racist language in their songs. It occurred to me that they must not be aware of the history of racist language in America. I did some research, and realized that I was not aware of this history either.About the Author: Deborah Norton is inspired by great artists. She is moved by social issues that affect young girls and women, and is working on her next book, a sequel that includes the issues of bullying, trafficking, and domestic violence. Norton lives in San Antonio, Texas. Publisher's website: http: //SBPRA.com/DeborahNorto
