Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church in the New Testament impacted the world. It changed culture from Jerusalem to Judea to Samaria and to the ends of the earth. The early disciples turned the world upside down with their message, their lives, their commitment, and their passion. But what about you? Are you praying for boldness? Or have you become satisfied with the status quo¿afraid to offend, almost apologetic of presenting Jesus as the only way to Heaven? If so, then it¿s time to join the radical mission of Jesus in your church, community, and world! Unleashed uses the book of Acts as a foundation to share powerful examples of how the church is fulfilling the revolutionary mission of Jesus and why the church today should be known for: ¿ Its passion to dream (Acts 17:6) ¿ Its diversity and unlimited reach (Acts 1:8; 10:1-48) ¿ Its mind-blowing growth (Acts 2:41-47; 4:4) ¿ Its confrontation of culture (Acts 4:13-22) ¿ Its supernatural power (Acts 4:23-31) ¿ Its extravagant giving (Acts 4:32-37) ¿ Its willingness to risk (Acts 5:17-42) ¿ Its constant motion (Acts 13:41-52) ¿ Its unswerving persistence to go and turn the world upside down (Acts 20:22-24)

Book The Portrait of the Master

Download or read book The Portrait of the Master written by James Twyman and published by Findhorn Press. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most endearing and human characters of the Middle Ages. His influence today is just as strong as 800 years ago when he was founding his Order, talking to Popes and carrying the message of peace to the infidel. St. Francis traveled with the crusaders not to fight the Muslims, or even to preach to them, but to persuade them, and the Christians, to make peace and live together in harmony. This book focuses around his prayer, Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace, and in a series of charming vignettes, it shows how the prayer develops in the course of his pilgrimage through Italy towards the East and an uncertain fate. This book reads like an adventure mystery story, yet also brings a message of peace, love and hope. We travel with Francis and Brother Leo from Assisi to Syria, meeting fascinating characters and learning life lessons along the way. While a certain element of fiction has been added, the basic story is true. St. Francis' message is timeless, and this book brings him to life as few others have.

Book Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking

Download or read book Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking written by Anya von Bremzen and published by Crown. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A James Beard Award-winning writer captures life under the Red socialist banner in this wildly inventive, tragicomic memoir of feasts, famines, and three generations “Delicious . . . A banquet of anecdote that brings history to life with intimacy, candor, and glorious color.”—NPR’s All Things Considered Born in 1963, in an era of bread shortages, Anya grew up in a communal Moscow apartment where eighteen families shared one kitchen. She sang odes to Lenin, black-marketeered Juicy Fruit gum at school, watched her father brew moonshine, and, like most Soviet citizens, longed for a taste of the mythical West. It was a life by turns absurd, naively joyous, and melancholy—and ultimately intolerable to her anti-Soviet mother, Larisa. When Anya was ten, she and Larisa fled the political repression of Brezhnev-era Russia, arriving in Philadelphia with no winter coats and no right of return. Now Anya occupies two parallel food universes: one where she writes about four-star restaurants, the other where a taste of humble kolbasa transports her back to her scarlet-blazed socialist past. To bring that past to life, Anya and her mother decide to eat and cook their way through every decade of the Soviet experience. Through these meals, and through the tales of three generations of her family, Anya tells the intimate yet epic story of life in the USSR. Wildly inventive and slyly witty, Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking is that rare book that stirs our souls and our senses. Book Overcome by Modernity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harry D. Harootunian

Download or read book Overcome by Modernity written by Harry D. Harootunian and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades between the two World Wars, Japan made a dramatic entry into the modern age, expanding its capital industries and urbanizing so quickly as to rival many long-standing Western industrial societies. How the Japanese made sense of the sudden transformation and the subsequent rise of mass culture is the focus of Harry Harootunian's fascinating inquiry into the problems of modernity. Here he examines the work of a generation of Japanese intellectuals who, like their European counterparts, saw modernity as a spectacle of ceaseless change that uprooted the dominant historical culture from its fixed values and substituted a culture based on fantasy and desire. Harootunian not only explains why the Japanese valued philosophical understandings of these events, often over sociological or empirical explanations, but also locates Japan's experience of modernity within a larger global process marked by both modernism and fascism. What caught the attention of Japanese thinkers was how the production of desire actually threatened historical culture. These intellectuals sought to "overcome" the materialism and consumerism associated with the West, particularly the United States. They proposed versions of a modernity rooted in cultural authenticity and aimed at infusing meaning into everyday life, whether through art, memory, or community. Harootunian traces these ideas in the works of Yanagita Kunio, Tosaka Jun, Gonda Yasunosuke, and Kon Wajiro, among others, and relates their arguments to those of such European writers as George Simmel, Siegfried Kracauer, Walter Benjamin, and Georges Bataille. Harootunian shows that Japanese and European intellectuals shared many of the same concerns, and also stresses that neither Japan's involvement with fascism nor its late entry into the capitalist, industrial scene should cause historians to view its experience of modernity as an oddity. The author argues that strains of fascism ran throughout most every country in Europe and in many ways resulted from modernizing trends in general. This book, written by a leading scholar of modern Japan, amounts to a major reinterpretation of the nature of Japan's modernity.
