Book Biodiversity of Mangroves

Download or read book Biodiversity of Mangroves written by A. B. Chaudhuri and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Biodiversity of Mangroves is a maiden endeavour of this, or by any other author, to unveil the hidden and rich treasure of biotal, physiographic, tribal, marine, coastal and other resources bringing under one umbrella- The Mangroves . It also highlights Tiger-Man interaction and rendenvous of innumerable invertebrate and vertebrate fauna, endemic and rare biota ot two premier mangrove sites situated at northern and southern apexes of The Bay of Bengal. The author does not merely layout checklists of plants and animals, birds and fishes, he also brings forth-facts on site-specific species, species association, endemism, biogeographic and other qualities. The most attractive and realistic aspect of Tiger Cult; and Man-Tiger interaction of Sundarbans have been brought to light. For the Bay Islands, indepth facts on several vanishing tribals, rare and endemic biota, problem and issues of Tropical Rain Forest and conservation strategy have been identified. Sundarban s mangrove history remains a sterile subject Sans Tiger-Man interaction and without revelation of Tiger s behavi-oural pattern; Similarly, without the vanishing tribals struggle for existence and stress stricken biotal s survival history the bay Islands remain in dark. In this field the author takes the pride to bring forth very many hidden qualities of these two mangrove forests to light so far not considered by any to discuss under one umbrella. The presentation has been made mostly from the author s own experience and involvement in scientific work, and his findings in both the areas which have also been recorded in books and various research papers since 1970. The readers are sure to have a realistic conception of the resources, problems and conservation strategy at a glance which is a unique presentation of the author. Book Biodiversity of the Sundarbans

Download or read book Biodiversity of the Sundarbans written by Jayanta Kumar Mallick and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together 45 years’ worth of experience-derived information about more than 7,000 micro- and macro- species, which form the unique bio-diversity of the world’s largest mangrove ecosystem, as it struggles against the natural and anthropogenic threats. Up to 1770, the estimated area of Sundarbans was around 36,000 km2, but has reduced over time to 25,000 km2, due to reclamation. This loss and the related degradation of habitats has caused historical species extinction and population decline. Whereas biodiversity conservation within and beyond the protected areas has been the watchword since the 1990s (“biodiversity, aesthetic values and integrity”), the initial two hundred years of imperial and post-colonial forest management focused primarily on revenue and production forestry, to the detriment of the ecology of the area. It will be of interest to researchers, in zoology, botany, ecology and conservation, as well as professionals, such as foresters, environmentalists, conservationists, resource managers, planners, government agencies, academic institutions, NGOs and naturalists.

Download or read book Spell of the Tiger written by Sy Montgomery and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Soul of an Octopus and bestselling memoir The Good Good Pig, a book that earned Sy Montgomery her status as one of the most celebrated wildlife writers of our time, Spell of the Tiger brings readers to the Sundarbans, a vast tangle of mangrove swamp and tidal delta that lies between India and Bangladesh. It is the only spot on earth where tigers routinely eat people—swimming silently behind small boats at night to drag away fishermen, snatching honey collectors and woodcutters from the forest. But, unlike in other parts of Asia where tigers are rapidly being hunted to extinction, tigers in the Sundarbans are revered. With the skill of a naturalist and the spirit of a mystic, Montgomery reveals the delicate balance of Sundarbans life, explores the mix of worship and fear that offers tigers unique protection there, and unlocks some surprising answers about why people at risk of becoming prey might consider their predator a god.

Book Wetland Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : B. Anjan Kumar Prusty
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2017-04-21
  • ISBN : 8132237153
  • Pages : 593 pages

Download or read book Wetland Science written by B. Anjan Kumar Prusty and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to acknowledge the discipline ‘wetland science’ and to consolidate research findings, reviews and synthesis articles on different aspects of the wetlands in South Asia. The book presents 30 chapters by an international mix of experts in the field, who highlight and discuss diverse issues concerning wetlands in South Asia as case studies. The chapters are divided into different themes that represent broad issues of concern in a systematic manner keeping in mind students, researchers and general readers at large. The book introduces readers to the basics and theory of wetland science, supplemented by case studies and examples from the region. It also offers a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers in allied fields such as environmental studies, limnology, wildlife biology, aquatic biology, marine biology, and landscape ecology. To date the interdisciplinary field ‘wetland science’ is still rarely treated as a distinct discipline in its own right. Further, courses on wetland science aren’t taught at any of the world’s most prestigious universities; instead, the topics falling under this discipline are generally handled under the disciplines ‘ecology’ or under the extremely broad heading of ‘environmental studies’. It is high time that ‘Wetland Science’ be acknowledged as an interdisciplinary sub-discipline, which calls for an attempt to consolidate its various subtopics and present them comprehensively. Thus, this book also serves as a reference base on wetlands and facilitates further discussions on specific issues involved in safeguarding a sustainable future for the wetland habitats of this region.

Book Managing Socio ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes for Sustainable Communities in Asia

Download or read book Managing Socio ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes for Sustainable Communities in Asia written by Osamu Saito and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents up-to-date analyses of community-based approaches to sustainable resource management of SEPLS (socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes) in areas where a harmonious relationship between the natural environment and the people who inhabit it is essential to ensure community and environmental well-being as well as to build resilience in the ecosystems that support this well-being. Understanding SEPLS and the forces of change that can weaken their resilience requires the integration of knowledge across a wide range of academic disciplines as well as from indigenous knowledge and experience. Moreover, given the wide variation in the socio-ecological makeup of SEPLS around the globe, as well as in their political and economic contexts, individual communities will be at the forefront of developing the measures appropriate for their unique circumstances. This in turn requires robust communication systems and broad participatory approaches. Sustainability science (SuS) research is highly integrated, participatory and solutions driven, and as such is well suited to the study of SEPLS. Through case studies, literature reviews and SuS analyses, the book explores various approaches to stakeholder participation, policy development and appropriate action for the future of SEPLS. It provides communities, researchers and decision-makers at various levels with new tools and strategies for exploring scenarios and creating future visions for sustainable societies.

Book Estuarine Morphodynamics of the Sunderbans

Download or read book Estuarine Morphodynamics of the Sunderbans written by Gautam Kumar Das and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of rigorous and continuous research work done by the author over about three decades on the open ecosystem and dynamic environment of the estuarine Sunderbans. The objective of this work is to identify the field and factors changing gradually upon this active delta over the years, decades and centuries. The deltaic Sunderbans yet not mature enough, has been changing in its natural course with time. Further, anthropogenic interferences disturb the environments and accelerate degradation of nature of this fragile ecosystem simultaneously. Roles played by almost all the agents including man and environment and their involvement are identified for the changing environmental scenario of the Sunderbans. The book is befitted for the researchers and students for the post graduate levels. The Sunderbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering parts of Bangladesh and the southern tip of Indian state of West Bengal, is a part of world's largest deltaic plain of fluvio-marine deposit formed by the Ganges and Brahmaputra at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal. It is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world, conspicuous for its great size and biodiversity. With an enormous network of channels and creeks, tidal inundation twice daily, Sunderbans mangroves wetland is a dynamic and complex ecosystem, which undergoes continuous processes of erosion and accretion. Natural processes like changes in local hydrology, sediment motion under wind, wave and tidal action, beach dynamics, regional and global processes like sea level rise as well as the impact of human interference in the form of reclamation of forest land, changes in land use patterns, coastal urbanizations etc are the lead factors for the changes in the environmental scenario of Sunderbans.

Book Forest of Tigers

Download or read book Forest of Tigers written by Annu Jalais and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed for its unique ecosystem and Royal Bengal tigers, the mangrove islands that comprise the Sundarbans area of the Bengal delta are the setting for this pioneering anthropological work. The key question that the author explores is: what do tigers mean for the islanders of the Sundarbans? The diverse origins and current occupations of the local population produce different answers to this question – but for all, ‘the tiger question’ is a significant social marker. Far more than through caste, tribe or religion, the Sundarbans islanders articulate their social locations and interactions by reference to the non-human world – the forest and its terrifying protagonist, the man-eating tiger. The book combines rich ethnography on a little-known region with contemporary theoretical insights to provide a new frame of reference to understand social relations in the Indian subcontinent. It will be of interest to scholars and students of anthropology, sociology, development studies, religion and cultural studies, as well as those working on environment, conservation, the state and issues relating to discrimination and marginality.
