Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Northeastern Pennsylvania Preface In accordance with the expressed wish of the late Doctor Everhart, as a supplement to the collection of woods and seeds of Lackawanna County, which he was making at the time he was stricken with his last illness, labeled and now on exhibition in the Museum, I presented my Herbarium of over 2, 000 specimens to the institution which bears its founders name. Incorporated in the Herbarium is a practically complete collection of the Flora of this part of the state, particularly of Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties. In further carrying out the wishes of Doctor Everhart I have prepared this check list of the Flora of the above region for publication. A preliminary list of the plants in the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys, of which Prof. W.R. Dudley, then of Cornell University, was the author, was published under the auspices of the Lackawanna Institute of History and Science, in 1887. This volume named 769 species as reported and classified. In 1892, Professor Dudley, then connected with the Leland Stanford University of California, and Prof. Charles O.Thurston of the Wyoming Seminary Scientific Department combined their personal notes, observations and collections with those of other students of local botanical research and issued a very complete catalog of "The Flowering Plants and vascular Cryptogams found in and near the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys." This volume contained the names of 107 orders and 974 species, to which there were later addenda of 88 species, - a total of 1, 062. Of this number several have since been considered doubtful, while others have become exterminated through forest fires or advance of cultivated areas and are not represented in this check list. The check list herewith presented contains the names of 115 orders and 1,534 species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Lancaster County: Being Descriptions of the Seed-Plants Growing Naturally in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania The list referred to above forms the basis of the present flora. Numerous additional species have been collected in the county by the authors of this volume and by their many associates and correspondents. Specimens of these species have been widely distributed, but the more complete sets occur in the herbarium of the new'york Botanical Garden, the herbarium of Franklin and Marshall College, the herbarium of J. J. Carter, the herbarium of the Field Museum of Natural History, the her barium of A. A. Heller, and the herbarium of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. All records of species on the following pages are based on specimens collected in the county. Lancaster County comprises almost 1000 square miles. Its extreme width, east and west is 47 miles, its extreme length, north and south, 41 miles. It lies southeast of the Appalachian Mountain System. There are no considerable altitudes attained by its hills, but the surface is quite diversified. Rolling hills and winding streams are numerous. The latter flow, without exception, either directly or indirectly into the Susquehanna River. The Susquehanna runs along the western boundary Of the county for a distance of more than 40 miles, and for over half of this distance it passes through a most picturesque canon with steep sides and wild lateral branches. This cahon has a southern exposure, and plants of a typically more southern flora have here made themselves at home. On the other hand, plants of a typically more northern flora are found in the cool Sphagnum swamps among the hills of both the northern and the southern parts of the county. These two somewhat extraneous elements, together with the plants typical Of the greater part of our area and the contiguous territory, comprise a flora of more than ordinary interest and diversity. The county is divided by its main geological formations into three topographical or geographical belts or zones. They are: (1) a northern belt of sandstones and shales, (2) a middle belt of limestones, and (3) a southern belt of schists. On the one hand, all three belts contain trap-dikes or outcrops of trap rock. On the other, the sandstones and shales are uninterrupted, except for a bay of limestone prolonged northward from the middle beAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of a Botanical Excursion in the Northeastern Parts of the States of Pennsylvania and New York: During the Year 1807 The manuscript Journal of the eminent botanist, Frederick Pursh, came into the possession of the American Philosophical Society, among some papers accompanying the herbarium of the late Dr. B. S. Barton. An entry occurs on the first page of this manuscript, made probably by the executor of Dr. B., viz: "Ms. Journal of a Botanical Excursion in the North eastern parts of Pennsylvania and in the State of New York. By an unknown person who appears to have been a German, & a friend of the late Dr. Benj. S. Barton. Found among the Books of Dr. Barton after his death in 1817." Being the acting Librarian of the Society, this interesting little volume has recently fallen under my eye, my attention was directed, to the following remark which occurs under date of July 20th, by a gentleman who had previously seen, and casually read, the manuscript: "Mr. Geddes brought me to a deep valley, about one mile from his house, where we ascended a steep, very rocky hill; there large masses of rock seem to be piled up or tumbled over one and another in such a confused manner, that it has left large chasms between them, which sometimes appear like caves." After enumerating a number of plants collected, he continues: "And what I thought most of, Asplenium scolopendrium. This Fern, which I don't find mentioned by any one to grow in America, I always had a notion to be found here, and indeed I was quite rejoiced to find my prejudice so well founded in truth." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key and Flora: Northern and Central States In the matter of nomenclature it seems best for those who do not wish to be hopelessly sectional to follow the rulings of the Vienna Congress. The author deems himself fortunate to have been able in this connection to avail himself of the deci sions of the staff of the Gray Herbarium, as embodied in the seventh edition of Gray's Manual of Botany, and to get advice from the same source in regard to names of cultivated plants not described in the Manual. His most sincere thanks are hereby tendered for this invaluable assistance. At the risk of sometimes seeming pedantic the writer has adopted the practice of discarding, for the most part, such un scientific expressions as stemless plants, radical leaves, calyx adnate to the ovary, and several others. It is certain that if the plant descriptions which contain such terms were now being framed for the first time on the basis of present day morphology, these terms would not be used.
